Bungie Not Providing Review Copies of Destiny to the Press

Bungie isn't giving out review copies of Destiny until the day before release? How is the press supposed to put together a meaningful and thoughtful review in less than a day? I'm pretty excited for this game, but shutting out the media like this adds to the suspicion that maybe this game isn't as large as we are expecting.

  • I believe this is two things. 1. Bungie taking 'no spoilers' to a whole new level. 2. Fair reviews. You can't give an honest review of an online Co-Op multiplayer shooter with only the same handful of fellow reviewers doing the same generalized content. You need them to spread out and actually explore the game to give both good and bad criticisms. Otherwise, you would have a stereotypical "CoD:CopyPaste gets another 9.5/10 by IGN. More of the same stuff, for the same score"

    • I guess it's activisions part of the money making machinery, they have just put too many Dollars into the franchise.

    • Who cares, we're past the reviews part. Just fire up the servers and lets start playing.

    • It's because the media jumped on the Beta so hard, they reviewed EVERYTHING in the Beta, which isn't the point of having a Beta. They tore that thing apart, flaws and all (but emphasis on the flaws), so why bother giving the media a second chance at tearing the game apart, before any fully paid patron can play it?

    • We already know what the game plays like. So there's no reason to worry from what I can see. We've played the game- it's not a mystery like Brink or something. That aside, the servers are not going up, and they don't want any risk of anybody ruining the story since that's such a huge focus. If you think about it, this being the first game we won't have to worry about spoilers for is actually really, really cool.

    • You can't properly enjoy the game without a whole fire team anyways. So unless you got three review copies to play the game properly there's no reasons to hand out just the one.

    • I'd typically say that something like this should just throw out alarms all across the field that is your brain, but we've had the opportunity to play quite a bit in the beta. I'm not particularly sure these reviews are necessary this time around. What new information would I gather from one of these? The best I can think of is something like "Well x character is kinda interesting, and y multiplayer element struck us as kinda odd."

    • Who cares. You base your choice solely on reviews from "game sites". I know for a fact ign will give any cod a perfect. Their in bed with them. I played the Alfa and beta. I'm going to love this game. If it's not as great as I anticipate who care there isn't shit out anyways for nextgen

    • No shit, most super big name titles don't... for fear a asswipe review will kill game sales before it even starts selling.. It's not really that out of character for large name publishers to do this... I almost would call it common practice honestly

    • Are you trying to suggest that the gaming media can put together a meaningful and thoughtful review in the first place?

      • I think they are sitting on the story, lore and maybe even some other big bits of news. I may just be optimistic but at this stage every time they fart six web sites grab a bit of that action and dissect it into bits so small it is hard to see what it was in the first place. Imagine if you gave these guys the game a week early... If you are worried hold off a week and read the reviews. Cautions consumers never buy day one of anything. Not me. See you star side on the 9th... After work...which seeing as I am in Australia will make it about the same time as the rest of you ;)

Bungie wants the people they made the game for to experience it first and that is nice. Plus maybe Bungie plans on world domination and how they will do it is in Destiny and no one must know until Bungie wants them to know. Then it will be to late.(•‿•)

          • They are shutting out the press because of the Destiny story line. It's not a conspiracy.

          • So when I read your post OP I switched out the words to meaningless and thoughtless. Because most media does not give great reviews of games. As in they seem like people who have never picked up a controller. Let's take the author over at Forbes for example. Sorry OP but you dont need the media to tell you what's what instead try something for yourself. Otherwise you'll miss a lot.

            • What difference does it make. Whether it's on release day or a week later all the press will give the game a near perfect score with a shining review no matter what the game is like.

            • You're talking about an almost never ending game, in order to get an accurate representation of the game, they would need it like 3 months in advance lol plus you don't always need reviews day one!

            • If you have to base a purchase off a review, I think you don't deserve to purchase the product. Not like it's difficult to simply research an form your own opinion, guess some just have to be handed one. Gaming reviewers suck almost as bad as movie reviewers do. I don't need somebody to tell me what I like & dislike. A society full of sheep, what has the world come to.

            • I never believed in reviews. They are all biased. If I don't like the game I'll just trade it in or let someone have it. It's almost like shopping for clothes. The only difference is not being able to try games out before playing but in this case we did try it out for a good couple of days. Decisions should already be set after the beta.

            • 4.6 million of us have already reviewed the game in a limited capacity. Let's be honest, did you like the beta? If you answered yes, are you really going to change your mind because some douche wearing thick rims and skinny jeans (IGN) doesn't share your point of view?

                  • I'm fine with this. Pre-release reviews have never sat perfectly well with me, and I write gaming articles on the side. It's one thing to release the review after launch, but sending out copies early always leads to a leak somewhere, huge spoilers that get blown up and become near-impossible to avoid unless you remove yourself from the internet.

                  • So someone on their end believes that there is a chance Destiny might not make it? Or at the very least, not match up with the hype. It could be other things but that's what comes to mind when Publishers/Developers do this sort of thing in my opinion. I think it's good (but tricky) business. Destiny has a good hype train going and an unexpected low score would quickly derail that hype thus losing potential buyers in the process. On the other hand I don't need any score to tell me if a game is good or not. Only the people with weak judgment and low self esteem do. I syphoned through the hype and knew what destiny was by the time I played the Beta. No its not Skyrim X10 or the second life some hoped it would be but I'm sure it's going to be a fun and enjoyable experience no matter what anyone says.
