So, I've seen threads left and right with the content of: "IDK why Bungie calls it 'competitive' multiplayer, I mean, with all the supers, movement modes, grenades and vehicles, and no custom matches, how could this game ever achieve MLG greatness, so it's clearly going to lose all its audience in the first few weeks, once they've completed the story. More like 'casual multiplayer', amirite?"
Bungie calls the Crucible "competitive multiplayer" because strikes, raids, and (if you so choose) story are cooperative multiplayer. Cooperative means you and the other humans you are grouped with are killing not-humans, with a shared goal. Competitive means you and the other humans you are grouped with are given goals contradictory to each other, where at the end, one team wins, and one team loses, and they compete for the highest score.
I know some of you folks will be playing in the crucible exclusively, so it's not immediately apparent that there's a cooperative multiplayer as well as competitive multiplayer, but there is, and that terminology is how Bungie separates them. I have no doubt that if private lobbies are not implemented prior to launch, they will be patched in shortly after the crucible proves a stable platform. Chill out, ladies and gentlemen, because until 9/9, there's a whole lot that can change.
Stay vigilant, Guardians.

Four thumbs up. "Competitive" == PvP It's that simple.
-
true. sadly the "competitive gaming" term nowadays just describes the reduces version of a game to make it as skillbased as possible. I dont know why everyone who considers his- or herself a competitive player still argues and complains about things that aremissing when they shouted out that destiny cant be a competitive game in the first place due to only 30 FPS. if its not possible anyway, why do they still complain? I'll love and enjoy casual competitive PvP matches with all of you guys. the tryhards, the campers, the i-sit-here-and-snipe-only-guys, the hunters-are-masterrace-guys, the normal players and the good (pros) that have 25:3 stats all game :) 9/9 i'm waiting

I think it's sad that some people believe every FPS needs to be in MLG.
-
Reasons why people are upset 30FPS is a subpar experience for a First Person Shooter and "holding back" to coddle the people who didn't leap into the next generation of consoles (like myself) is lazy developing. Unbalanced PVP with unbalanced weapons, map control, and classes. We were lied to in 2013 at E3 about "I've been told I can't jump down there, not because I can't, but because I don't want to make the demo too long" and "see that mountain over there? You can climb that" coming straight from a developers mouth. A fairly linear story, fetch quests galore, and a pseudo-open world experience "It was only a beta," doesn't mean anything other than your excusing the developers from shoveling shit down your throat and sitting on their piles of money throwing packages that you have to throw more money at them to open up for the next "10 year life span." This isn't a WoW killer, this isn't even a Borderlands killers.

competitive multiplayer is exactly what this is meaning we compete against other players which is pvp but competitive pvp is tournament and league focused pvp which destiny is not.
-
Competitive =/= eSport

Edited by Recolektion: 8/17/2014 2:40:39 PMSo to sum it up (cause I'm not reading all of the above) it means to "play to win" durrr

Edited by Ronannnn: 8/17/2014 3:13:51 PM
Competitive means you and the other humans you are grouped with are given goals contradictory to each other, where at the end, one team wins, and one team loses, and they compete for the highest score.
Your statement is completely false. You should use the dictionary more often.

Edited by Brewchino: 8/17/2014 3:33:38 PMSo in shorter words, it's like a sport. You can go to the rec center & play basketball "competitively"... Or play professional in the NBA "competitively". Same word yes but there is a difference, and it's a fair point. How can you do the latter w/o pvt matches? Everyone's stuck at the rec center
I do like the rec center, but I wanna try the big league too
Fukk MLG
-
While you are correct i will have to point out that Bungie is fairly aware of what competitive means to most people and the way they used it was for marketing.
-
Ah yes, the epic struggle between pvp and pve continues....
-
competitive means private matches and tournaments not TDM pubs
-
PVE just want you to stop nerfing our mechs and super powers. What the hell nobody wants to sit and kneel all the time in the church of PVP singing Oh naaaayyy, no naaaayyy as the guns and the cool stuff gets yanked because you guys hate one another.
-
Oh yeah, forgot something else in my list, people are upset there isn't Private matches or custom games
-
Edited by aboniks: 8/17/2014 5:46:12 PMAs long as the pvp matchmaking algorithms are solid, most of the argument is going to evaporate. Give it time. Let them all wear themselves out yelling into the echo chamber.

About time someone made this post, been tellin people the same thing but they dont wanna listen :/.

Yes. Only boob will tell. Boob heals all.

Although I'm not a big PVPer, and more into the PVE aspect, I do love how Bungie is incorporating everything into the story, even the PVP being a sparring battlegrounds where we hone our skills for the real fight. It would be interesting if say they had Private Lobbies, but it was something you had to unlock. You know, where you had to play enough PVP matches to get enough marks (perhaps combined with glimmer) to purchase your own 'Private Lobby' to host with your friends, so only those that earned it by playing enough public matches would be able to host for friends/clan members. Just a random thought that crossed my mind, and would give something extra cool for PVPers to strive for...

In what world do you live in where competitive multiplayer means MLG? Who cares anyway? The game is great and just because your opinion differs doesn't mean this game will lose it's player base after story mode.
-
Starting today, when you see a thread claiming that Destiny isn't competitive, simply respond by quoting Inigo Montoya: “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means." Hopefully the threads will cease from existence the week after launch.
-
I stopped reading at MLG greatness
-
I hate MLG. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than beating someone with MLG in their name.

For a word definition, that was a long post. Nothing wrong with that, it was a well written explanation but all the same. A single quote of a definition from friggin' webster's of the word competitive may have sufficed :P.
