I agree with everything you said...except for Destiny not being an MMO. It is an MMO that is built around a FPS, rather than a third-person action game mechanic. Because Bungie has so much experience with FPS and is in partnership with the company that owns the company that produces the most successfull and longest running MMO (Bizzard...World of Warcraft) it has been able to avoid (so far) many of the problems MMOs run into, in trying to be too massive or too interacive. You eventually reach a point where the servers are under so much stress that game play breaks down and you lag and glitch problems; You have so many people and things on the screen you get chaos; or you don't have enough and people find unsatisfactory for that reason. I was just getting into playing DC Universe Online, before the Destiny beta dropped...and I find that Destiny plays VERY similarly to DCUO. As similarly as a FPS can play to a third person combat game. I suspect if you picked apart DCUOs programming and server structure, you'd probably find even more similarities. At the end of the day, I see it this way. Destiny is a game that is helping to remake the MMO, and make it work for FPSs and consoles. But people have a lot of negative associations with "MMO", and have a lot of assumptions about how an MMO "should" play...and Bungie is desperately trying to avoid getting saddled (or hammered) with all that baggage as they try to break this new ground.

  • I see what you are saying, I had the official Sony forums guide to fire for two years. So I do see the similarities, however in Destiny you never see more than 10 to 15 other players at a time, in DC universe and other mmo's there are thousands of people on the same server at the same time. If everyone and destiny was on the same server or if you picked servers to play on then I would agree. But since it does not, I do not but thank you for your input.

  • That's because DCUOs game play mechanics can support those numbers---even though you never interact with that many players----FPSs can't. Though the architecture of both games is otherwise the same
