I'm actually very disappointed

Disclaimer: Before I go into detail as to why I am disappointed, I would like to point out that Destiny is a very fun game. I have had more fun playing the alpha and the beta than I have in any game for years. It is a world I want to get lost in, to explore it's secrets and I will still buy the game when it releases, and the expansions as well. But I am disappointed by the hype that Bungie has been feeding into this game since it's unveiling at E3 2013. I've been following Destiny ever since this point. I remember when Bungie told us that any place we could see, we could go to. This led me to believe that Destiny's location would be massive, giant places. Comparable to play spaces like Skyrim. Maybe I was expecting too much. Maybe I was hyped too much. But when I entered Old Russia for the first time, and found out that if I tried to go to that mountain in the distance, the same one Bungie told me I could explore back in 2013, that I would hit an invisible wall and fall into a death zone I was disappointed. The play spaces in Destiny disappoint me. Old Russia feels bland and uninteresting, and it is quite small. Nearly all of the caves are carbon copies of each other and not much exploration can be done, as there are the main focal point of each area, the Skywatch Building, the boats in Forgotten Shore, but there isn't any point to try and explore the small copied caves littering the playspace except to find an occasional respawning chest. The only places in Old Russia that are of any interest to explore are the areas the story funnels you into, the places you are supposed to go. Bunker RAS-2 and The Grottos I guarantee are going to part of the story somehow. My point is, Explore mode should be renamed to Farm mode, because you don't go into the caves to explore them, because they are too small, you go into that mode to farm glimmer and loot. Exploring in Destiny is not what I expected it to be, not in the least. I did enjoy the Moon though. Even if the above ground space was extremely small, the underground space in Hellmouth was quite large for a single place, with at least 3 or so places blocked off inside. The Moon is interesting, so interesting. But it suffers from the same problem as Old Russia, copied caves and really the only place to explore is Hellmouth. I was met with invisible walls and death screens time and time again, trying to go and truly explore the moon. Also, from the ViDoc Pathways into Darkness, Bungie showed gameplay footage of a place on Earth that was not Old Russia. The color palette was different and it was littered with pine trees, it looked quite similar to the type of area the pvp map Rusted Lands is in, which would lead me to believe it is in the Eastern Flood Zone. However with the recent revelation that at launch each planet will only have one explorable zone, it looks like we will have to wait until an expansion comes to be able to "Explore" this area. This also disappoints me because it leads me to believe that there is more content, done and finished, but Bungie/Activision won't put into the "finished" game. It makes me feel that the large living world of Destiny will have to be paid for with several post launch expansions. But I feel like all of this extra content should have and could have been put into the released version. But knowing Activision, I don't know why I expected anything different. I understand that things change during the developmental process of games, but if Bungie had kept its promise of a large, explorable, living world of Destiny, where players could go as far as the eye could see, a truly massive gameplay experience, I would not have cared if Destiny was delayed until 2016, hell I wouldn't have cared if Destiny was delayed until they finished it, however long that took. Instead we get a very fun game, but one that fails to deliver on what it promised to be, groundbreaking.

  • I honestly think you have the previous generation to blame for these things. Having to develop these games for out-dated systems seriously hinders the capabilities this game can have. Had they just made this next-gen only, this game would probably be massive. This is why last-gen just needs to die and people need to move on. I get that they want to develop things so people with last gen are satisfied. But it's holding next-gen games back that have to develop for out dated systems.

    • Did you happen to see at least 3 of the secret underground spots in old russia, the places where the enemies are too high level to even harm let alone kill?

      • I love this game and will play it nonstop with much enjoyment BUT i do agree that I expected more space to explore. It feels a bit linear and guided. I was 100% under the impression, after seeing the various reveals, that I could turn around at the entrance of the Cosmodrome and just wander out into the distance and meet up with people and explore. I had a completely different idea of the game in my head last year than I do now. It's still a great game but man, I was so excited for endless exploration.

        • I would only like to talk about things that i did see that disappointed me. Destiny is a great game by far , I was sad to learn that the BETA ended. As an artist and small time game developer (really small). I understand the need and value of both complement and criticism. I understand that you need the complements to reassure you that you're going in the right direction, but at the same time the criticism helps you see things in a different light. Again i want to state that Destiny is a great game, and i look forward to being sleep deprived come September 9th, however some things disappointed me. I'm only going to limit it to my top 5 I was disappointed to see, that my guardian didn't get much face time. After customizing my "Space Valkyrie" I suddenly realized that I looked just like every other guardian (when not in the tower.) this made me feel less unique. (This one is just me being picky I fully understand that the helmet plays on the immersion of the game, and to see a guardian without a helmet on the surface of the moon would be nothing short of an insult. Degrasse wouldn't even bother giving you a call to explain) I didn't like that some early guns were already maxing out some of their attributes. In Many RPGs (for me at least) it's sad to know you have the fastest, or most powerful weapon on the game, even more hypocritical in saying that's actually my goal in every RPG, to search for the weapon that's so good it makes me sad. ( I can only assume these guns were made to be decent only because no one wants their entire beta experience to be filled with lower tier weaponry. Thus some guns had to be of a greater quality) I'd wish to have seen more gun archetypes, I know this was only a BETA therefore the content is limited, so i can only hope for more, but as it stands now the arsenal seems quite limited with only about 8 archetypes. ( I want to say that I was satisfied with my archetypes) For a game this scale I'd like to see more (I could only pray they add space bows, I'd drop my Sniper for that.) Most of the weaponry seems to be made from the same manufacture(s). This one is a bit wired but while my "Space Valkyrie" was under fire. I though that it would be neat to have on of those Fallen needlers. It just be another thing for guardians to explore. If I were to equate this to halo, then it would be like playing the entire game with weapons only created by the UNSC. ( I honestly hope that this is in the works as in previous games bungie has developed they'd showcase the opposing forces' technology. This also opens up room for them to be get more creative with their projectiles, and trajectories.) I would have liked to see weapons that seem to created by the humans, awoken, exos as well. The spawning on the map was infinitely repetitive. So I just killed a squad of four vandals, I mean obliterated them, and a minute later a drop-ship sends the same amount of of the same type of enemies. Isn't that insanity. When I observed this I wanted to see the drop-ship at least choose another position to drop them or send a higher tier enemy ,maybe even a special hit-squad to deal with the annoying spawn camper. For me this made the Old Russia exploration mission quite repetitive, after seeing enemies spawn and immediately use the same tactics, going to the same positions as the previously spawned group. (I can only assume this was simple system that implemented to test the spawning, and to see how a populated map works . and hopefully they will consider varying up the amount and type of enemies that spawn.) those were my top 5 concerns, actually my only concerns I have with this game most of them seem like constraints of a BETA and hopefully at release the game will contain more content in the directions previously specified. I fully understand that I am only one person and my opinion may not even have as much weight as others, however I really like destiny and I just wanted to write on my opinion, so that they can see it, and maybe if can change minds if not spark some ideas. Thank you Bungie

          • i totally agree with you canceled my pre order and will get the game used, the way bungie hyped this game it is very underwhelming. I have no doubt it is going to be a good game but one explorable space per planet it bogus i know exactly how this game is going to turn out and i dont mind waiting for a used copy..

          • So glad this was pick up actually but, on the director, I noticed where the '1/5 golden chests' part of the director seemed to cover up an extra zone (the area from the 1st ViDoc and E3 2013). There are also a few other places that have been ominously forgotten about. 1) Mercury 2) The abandoned ships near Saturn 3) Europa 4) The European Flood/dead zone (idk the name) 5) The Ruins of Chicago Now, I LOVED the beta and I will be buying this AND its DLC but I hope Bungie and/or Activision aren't purposely omitting content for DLC because that would BLAM ing suck.

          • I dont see anything ground breaking about destiny. Im sorry, but this is a mash up of Mass Effect and Halo. Is it a good game? Yes. Is it completely original? No.

              • There is a system set up for games that are shipped with no DLC, it's Called Elder Scrolls Online. It doesn't take the payment out of it, it just forces everyone to pay for monthly updates and maintinance. I would rather pay $20 for DLC than be forced to pay $15 for what appears to be no change from the previous month. I must admit though, I am also saddened by the revelation that we can't explore all the areas they said we could. Maybe one day. What would be epic is if every game had the previous games destinations, but larger, and then more destination. So that eventually you do play on Skyrim scaled maps. I see that being a longshot though.

Bungie suggested that the game was an epic space voyage, when really it's a first person Diablo that plays like Halo, where you master the mechanics & use high level loot to over come challenges both in single player and in coop to gain even more loot for PvP (if you see it on those terms, you'll love it) They also have, on multiple times showed concept art for different places on the earth map & said things that "you can go anywhere you can see" (which is a total falsehood). Saying that, gamers should wait for the community, reviewers & themselves to see, if not play the full game to determine if the game has enough content."

You know, the more i think about it, the more I think that the Old Russia map from the alpha and beta is just a small closed-off portion of the actual map and the backgrounds are just placeholder. that's probably also the reason Bungie might not directly make a statement regarding the size of the beta map (I believe they haven't made any comments about it yet, correct?).

                  • I couldn't agree more about the invisible walls being a huge disappointment. The entire time during the beta I never felt like I was exploring, just going where bungie wanted me to go. They made this game out to be the "invisible wall killer" where you truly could explore to your hearts content. That's not the case. Why can't I climb to the top of the cosmodrone? The actual "Explore" mode that they have is downright atrocious and I can only hope that's not the full version at release. "Collecting bone marrow from fallen enemies" are you -blam!-ing serious bungie?

                      • One thing to take into mind is how dumbed down the amount to explore and what not were in the alpha and beta they literally wanted you to have things to do in the full game that they dumbed the versions down a mega ton.

                      • This is the Case of Bungie being too tight lipped about their game. They did a poor job of attempting to correct journalists who described Destiny as "the next Skyrim." This has lead to my own and many other's disappointment. I was expecting Destiny to have at least three times more explorable area and quests. I am particularly disappointed about how the "factions" are just shopkeepers with rep-tabards. For those of you reading who are thinking "you guys shouldn't feel so entitled to such a massive experience" I need only to point to games like Skyrim, GTA, Dark Souls, etc. Game Dev is extremely competitive and cut throat. I think the guys at Bungie are too confident in their brand and have missed the biggest opportunity they will ever have.

                        • Yes I completely agree with your sentiments. I loved the gameplay, but the world itself is not what I was expecting. We were expecting open worlds to explore, but it seems more like a series of large FPS type maps that you come to over and over again. I think the novelty of these environments will fade pretty quickly.

                          • I feel luckyer than you. I play since 1980 and, at that time, games never ever kept the super hyper promises devs made. I grow up when the biggest upgrade in a game was "it will be in 256 colours onscreen!". So I learned to listen to 'the hype' with only one ear. I'm not that much disappointed by the Destiny beta. That said I have to admit that all I wanted to see was 2 trailers (story and gameplay). I don't keep up hopes since 1990 (I guess). Regardless I was disappointed a little by many games (child of light, watchdogs, RE operation Racoon City just to name a few). I own a large collection of games and I learned to NOT anticipate how a game I'm waiting for will be. This saved me a bunch of disappointments. So, I loved what I saw in Destiny even if I don't like FPS so much. I'm waiting for the 9th of Sep trying to not imagine what else the game has to offer.
