Dark Souls 2 | Crown of the Sunken King

Note: Spoilers will be kept in spoiler tags. You have been warned. It's definitely worth the money, and I'll explain what it does/doesn't deliver. Many people believe the DLC trilogy was a cash grab scam in the works. The content itself is a little less if not on par with what the Dark Souls Artorias DLC brought to the table. The Sunken King DLC takes place below the Black Gulch in the ruins of a Sanctuary built by the Sunken King.
Apparently it was to worship the dragon Sinh, who broke free and left the Sanctuary in Ruins.
. The items found in the DLC provide lore, that is, lore irrelevant to the lose ends needing to be tied up from Drangleic and the original story. The new lore sadly leaves us in more mystery with no special characters other than vague mentions from the past. The area will definitely remind veterans of Oolacile township with thin walkways and many levels within the temples accompanied by shortcuts. Landscapes in and around the Sanctuary provide excellent battlegrounds for intense PvP action. There are new enemies to encounter with special groups that will test what you can do on the fly: I'll leave it at that ;) Some areas are designed to screw over players who make the wrong move. It's classic Souls areas that make you go "Awe -blam!-" as one mishap leads to a quick end.
There's a cave filled with Stone petrification statues and multiple enemies cluttered in a single space. It sucks until you find the exit.
The DLC messes with players who have yet to hone their senses. If you're doing a true blind through without reading messages, you will have to revist areas to fully unearth every secret and pathway. You can get stuck. Weapons and items are hidden away in the sanctuary that add a new kind of variety to Souls combat.
Ever use a sword that extends into a whip and retracts back to a blade?
There are some useless areas. Basically From is giving you a big middle finger as you fight your way to a specific location with a dead end, which may make you rush around and get yourself killed. Now the fun stuff: Boss time! The fights are definitely fair and amazing in their own right. If you're going in alone, you'll have to constantly adapt to the Boss tactics and the surrounding area. There are 3 bosses, one of which is optional and you'll have to work to get their alive. There's an amazing surprise after winning.
There is a queen who should have replaced Nashandra as her fight is better/harder IMO. She summons quite a bit while dealing dark/pyro spells.

The toxic Dragon Sinh provides an epic battle to overcome as he is fast and swift while doing combos and crippling attacks. This fight is amazing to jolly coop in.

Who knew From would make Ganking a boss fight in it's own right? A match against a skilled NPC trio is quite fun :3
TL:DR: The DLC doesn't tie up loose ends regarding the lore and adds vague/meh lore to the game, but the rest is marvelous and will make even the most skilled players fail occasionally, and this only part one of the trilogy.. 4/5 Oh and there's a tough NPC invasion above the rest.

  • I am loving the DLC so far. Feels like an old area in the original Dark Souls. I had no clue what was going to happen or where I should have gone. The enemies (at my current level, I think around 80), did a lot of damage, but I could handle them. Again, it reminded me of the original, in which the enemies would wreck me if I wasn't careful. Not to mention I actually ran out of Estus and was searching frantically for a bonfire. I can't say how happy I was when I found one. I haven't even gotten to the first boss yet. I love this DLC.

  • I would've already started playing, but I was holding out on 360 getting a season pass, which it apparently doesn't for seemingly no reason. So I just bought it before and will play it soon. But from what I've heard, sounds like it's good with only a few minor drawbacks.

    • I haven't played it yet because currently I'm a poor man. That and a friend gave me the Density Beta so I'm preoccupied with that. But I hear in terms of level design it was a lot more.... explory. Which is good. If From can do good work on their DLC than it might really help extend the life of the original title.

    • Wait so that sword you mentioned is in the DLC only?

I love the level design so far. This really did Dark Souls 1 justice, i cant forget how afraid I was of the unknown. Everything was a new threat iI knew nothing about and often killed me instantly. There hasn't been anything that bad in the DLC to immediately own me, but that fear of the unknown is very present due to the level design. Enemy design is alright too, the bugs do a ton of damage to me in NG+3 though, so they are kind of annoying. It's funny, the soldier enemies have a ton of poise and I was going at them with Zweihander, and I realized that for so much of Dark Souls 2 I relied completely on breaking an enemies poise and killing the enemy, usually not taking damage. It was a sad realization as I remember very well learning to avoid enemy attacks, blocking, and hitting enemies at the right time to win in Dark Souls 1. It's sad how unnecessary that is now.
