Should Proximity Chat Be Implemented As an Option?

READ BEFORE VOTING Destiny, Bungie’s newest exquisite videogame, is filled with breathtaking visuals and compelling gameplay, and that’s after only playing the Alpha and Beta versions, although there is one major flaw that’s been brought to my attention: Destiny lacks proximity chat, which is the ability to speak with other players whom are near you. Currently, players can wave to each other, dance with each other, and point at things “in a desperate, and futile, attempt at communication” (SoloPopo). Players can’t make new friends, talk about strategies, nor ask for assistance. With proximity chat, players can get to know each other and share their experiences they’ve had in Destiny. Maybe you just want to compliment someone’s awesome armor and be on your way. Players would be able to talk about how they’ll complete an event or where to find some loot. Imagine trying to strategize by pointing everywhere. Players would be able to ask for assistance during combat. Imagine fighting enemies with a few other players, and when you get cornered, all you can do is point at them and dance for your life. Destiny is based on the notion of being always-online and multiplayer. If everyone is a mute, then what is the point? As SoloPopo said, “It's ridiculous, and kills the immersion. Why are other players even in the game if you can't interact with them?” Being able to wave and point is fine if you don’t have a headset plugged in, but it should be optional, because being able to speak is a much better alternative. Proximity chat should be the next feature implemented in Destiny. In GameInformer's interview with Lars Bakken, Bungie's multiplayer lead, Bakken stated "We know that, not just in multiplayer, that in general, when you get into a game with someone that you don't know or someone that you've never seen before and may never see again, they have this power to completely destroy your entire experience and maybe ruin the game for you forever" (Manuch). If another player is being obnoxious and you want to disable proximity chat, you can simply switch between three chat settings: Proximity, Fire Team, and Off. This feature would also require the following settings. Chat Settings: Proximity - Chat with players near you. Fire Team - Chat with your Fire Team. (A symbol appears above your head to non-fire team members which indicates that you cannot chat.) Off - You can't hear anyone in-game, nor can they hear you. (A symbol appears above your head to all players which indicates that you cannot chat. This setting would also be activated upon joining an Xbox LIVE party and whatever the similar chat system is called on Playstation consoles.) Orrr Proximity Chat: On/Off, and you can always hear and speak to your Fire Team. Here's another good thread about the topic. Here's an additional feature Coffeenator requested in the comments:
One feature I would add to the prox. chat is a kind of karma system where if someone gest muted by some number of people in a period of time that they are muted in-game for everyone except for players in their fire team if they are in one. Over time their Karma would get better and they would be unmuted until they would get muted enough to go over the threshold again.
Sources: SoloPopo. "Proximity Chat Is Not an Option." You put more effort into this thread than it takes to invite someone to a fire team or party chat. Get over yourselves. No one cares to hear you, and if they do they can just invite you to talk. Blame people who play music, the teen rating that's going to fill the tower with "where'd you get that kids"... Blame raging tryhards who scream objectives, and blame everyone else when they die.. Destiny was far from anti social.. some of you just make it that way, or are just too lazy to invite someone. Unless you're one of those crappy players who can't get invited/invites accepted, and feel the need to be heard anyways... Then I'm sure you'll vote yes on this poll.

    • Seriously Bungie, we want proximity chat with on/off toggle. Is that too much to ask for a $500 mill dollar game? The game is too much shared with other people and too social NOT to have proximity chat.

      • I have no desire to hear random people yelling at me calling me a bad kid. The reason they got rid of chat is because of the hatred that is online. So glad I don't have to mute a whole team anymore.

        • I like how Bungie is allowing complete control to the players in who they choose to talk with. I don't like being forced into listening to others when I do not want to. I don't care for rap music, or who's mother is mad at their kid for not finishing their homework, someone's negative opinion of everyone else, or someone's failed attempts at trying to score a date. It may not sound like a problem to some, but for others who decide to immerse themselves into the world Bungie has created, exploring it, fighting in it, leveling up in, its a huge deal, can ruin their time as well. If it were to be implemented, it would need to be off by default. You cannot take the time to pause the game and mute some asshole while enemies are shooting at you, because there is no pause. I think this would be a fine way to do it.

Even if voice chat isn't for everyone, at least give us the option of using it or not. Jumping into parties with strangers just to ask a quick question or spend five minutes playing together on a public event or crucible match is just silly. Even though this game is public and requires online to play, the thousands of mute characters running around makes the game feel so.. empty. Not being able to communicate--in my personal opinion--is the game's one major flaw. You're meant to work together in the crucible, but can't always be bothered to pull a party together with everyone in the lobby so the game is silent aside from the disembodied announcer giving a constant play-by-play in the background. What if that player disconnects during the match? Gets bored or ragequits? What if you really don't plan on ever speaking again after that quick match, was it really worth the hassle of organizing a party? If you want to thank someone for saving your sorry hide when you're being overrun by mobs in the field, how can a wave, point or dance really do it justice? If you want to organize a fireteam in town, is it seen as rude or abrasive to walk up to random people walking by and inviting them to a party they'll probably refuse to join? If there's one thing I want more than anything in Destiny, it's to be able to hear the people I'm sharing the universe with. I want to strike up conversation in town without dragging myself to the forums just to attempt to find someone to play with or ask a question that I have to wait thirty minutes to get an answer for. Please Bungie, PLEASE, add proximity chat to the game! It's too quiet, too lonely, too empty when it's supposed to be a world populated by so many other players. If we're meant to be sharing this world together, let us at least feel like we are!

        • After playing the game for a week now, with my friends and I normally on at different times, we normally end up playing alone. I have to admit, lack of proximity or any simple game chat is completely isolating and weird, and it is starting to spoil the game play. I get that some people will always troll, but the option to mute them solves that issue - so saying no in game chat is to stop trolling is a moot point. I love the game so far, but no fireteam chat or proximity chat during an "event" is brutal.

            • You ever gonna add my idea in there? You said you would a long time ago :/ I'm just trying to help here, to get people to understand it could be very simple yet very effective
In the game's Settings you have an option to completely disable Proximity Chat to avoid accidentally turning it on. If a player has proximity chat enabled in the Settings, they can use it through 2 functions assigned to a single button. - Hold the button to switch between listening to Fireteam chat and proximity chat. This is the function that enables Proximity Chat. - Press the button to switch between talking in Fireteam chat only and proximity chat. This way you can hear everything in the proximity chat but only talk to your Fireteam if you choose to. I think having these two functions would be simple enough and allow the amount of flexibility needed so the proximity chat works well
• Would be a very nice addition! A chance to get to know people via voice chat seems ideal for the social game Destiny is trying to be. I do however like the whole Journey (the game) thing it's going for as well. With silent guardians coming in and out of your adventures has a certain charm to it in my own opinion. All in all a proximity voice chat, with an on or off option, couldn't hurt the game. Cheers!

Social online game, with no inherent way to socialise with random players you meet. Instead you have to spam friends requests just to attempt to communicate with other players. You'd think with such a huge budget, development cycle and history of games with good tools for communicating bungie couldn't -blam!- this up so bad.

                    • I just heard this on Guardian One Podcast, can someone tell me if this is true? I am in the tower, I wave to someone he/she waves back. I then add her/him to my fireteam and I STILL CANNOT chat with them. I actually have to add them to my PSN friends list??? This can't be true right?

                      • I have mixed feelings. If trading items will not be implemented, then sure! If not however, I imagine proximity chat being invaded by item sellers (items for real money). The tower being flooded by those is something we won't be able to stop.

                          • I'm going to use this as an example why proximity chat will not be in destiny . if you were in PlayStation Home the early days it had proximity chat but you know what happen everyone abused it so it was taken out and most likely it would happen again and thats it thats why there is no proximity chat in destiny.
