Do we live in a patriarchal society?

Most of my friends are young, indie, and liberal, so I get a lot of this stuff on social media. I'm just wondering what your opinions on this are, and I'd particularly appreciate responses from any women or transgender folks. Barring any bandwagon feminist-extremism, do you perceive our society as markedly patriarchal, in that it strongly favors men over women in many capacities such as employment, government office, social equality, and legal stature? A common issue several of my female friends have stated is that they have a "constant/daily fear" of men. I'm not even sure what to say to that..."sorry"? Is it fair to treat all men as hostile because of that fear, and how is that any different than fearing a different race for the crimes some members have committed? There's more I could go on about, but I'd prefer to return back to the main question. Post yours thoughts. Thanks Flood.
One tiny thing. The link above is what prompted this thread, and I find it really off-putting that the author has to keep mentioning, even confessing, that he's a "cis white male", as if it's something to be ashamed of.
My initial answer before reading the article? Yes. But not as overblown as some of the posters whose postings have escaped tumblr to the web at large. Women in general still suffer slights against them solely because of their race. You can still find parts in America were women are treated as the lesser. Denied jobs, made to suffer insults. Course if you go elsewhere in the world you'll find places where women are -blam!- without justice being sought (pretty much 24/7 in India), traded like an item, mistreated cruelly (burned with acid for leaving an abusive arranged marriage), and so on.

    • The following post is going to tick off a lot of people, so if you are easily offended, don't even bother reading further. You've been warned. It is my honest, sincere opinion as a MEXICAN male, a lesser-privileged minority, that the most privileged group in the West IS NOT and has NEVER BEEN heterosexual White males. Rather, It's been their women. It's White women--the same kind who compose 90% of the feminist movement--that are the most privileged group in the history of the West. When minority women like Black slaves, Latin Americans, and Asians were second-class citizens and/or slaves, who was it that made their lives a living hell? It wasn't the White men--in fact, the White men were bonkers over our women and would much rather marry them than their own--but it was the jealous, malicious White women. Jealous, malicious White women would abuse our minority women in secret, often physically and emotionally. And why would they do this? Because their perverted White husbands preferred them over their own White women. They abused our women simply because they were beautiful and posed a threat to them. They teased them, stigmatized them, labeled them whores, etc. And now what is happening years later? Years later those same privileged White women who teased, tortured, and detested our women are adopting the exact same things that they used to criticize them for. Why do White women dye their hair dark? Why do they tan their skin brown? Why do they desire a large butt? Why do they want curves? They are stealing the qualities that used to make our minority women so attractive. Even worse, they are stealing credit for them. Who was it that got Black men lynched? Lusty White women who -blam!- them and then played the victim so the enraged White husband would take out his anger on the innocent Black male. Who was it that cursed minority women with the cyanide known as abortion and Planned Parenthood? Privileged White women like Margaret Sanger. They called us "human weeds" and were explicit eugenists who spoke for the KKK and started all this abortion family planning female-empowerment garbage. They took the hateful message of eugenics and racism and were able to market it into the fraud known as feminism--they made it marketable. It's the deception of the White woman. They did what the KKK and Naziism failed at. They are fooling minority women into murdering their own offspring and not reproducing so that our communities at large will suffer. Feminism itself is the result of privilege. White women talk about equal rights like the right to work, vote, and have a life outside the house? That's the result of privilege. Minority women never had this dilemma because our communities were never so privileged in the first place. Our women historically have had to already work, trade, vote, and take on a more proactive spot in society in order to survive. Our women couldn't afford to be spoiled, oversized children like White women could. And to this day, White women still are the most privileged group--they're spoiled oversized children. They talk about equal rights but they have no problem with the male-only draft; they talk about being recognized as responsible adults, yet they want to make drunk sex -blam!- even though an adult is fully responsible for their own decisions, even while under the influence. They want equal rights but they want sexist domestic abuse laws where the man is punished harsher just because males are usually stronger than women. They want women to be recognized as something beyond mere sexual playthings for male entertainment, yet it's spoiled little White girls who get wasted and twerk on the wall like Miley Cyrus with their repulsive duck-faces and will accept the D from whatever pig is willing to give it.

      • We absolutely do live in a patriarchal society. Progress has been made but the rise of "gamer gate" and things of that nature prove that we still have a long way to go.

      • I think that it's pretty clear that we do. I think that it would be tough to prove that we don't.

      • >See a woman using her laptop in the airport >I notice it has stopped working >My oppressive male heart fills with sadistic malice towards her >I walk up to her, grinning with savage glee >Shock and horror fills her face as she sees me looming over her >Her eyes brim with tears >She cowers and begs “P-please don’t, sir…” >My engorging penis begins to rip the seams of my pants as I leer and say “Pardon me, but I couldn’t help noticing you’re having computer troubles. If you don’t mind, I’m sure I could fix them.” >Her eyes downcast, she mumbles “o-okay” I savagely take her computer and begin to fix the rather simple problem as tears stream down her face >All the men around me begin laughing evilly and hooting like wild apes of Borneo, reveling in her oppression >I hand it back to her, saying darkly that it should be working now >Testosterone fueled ecstasy fills me as I watch her spirit crumble >She weakly takes it from my strong male grip >All the women in the airport are now forced on their knees from the oppression in the air >Defeated, broken, she feebly sobs “Thank you” as the last of her independence disappears >As I go to catch my flight, I smugly reply “It was my privilege"

Well from my experience being a transgender woman it kinda is because of how many men need to assert their masculinity. Me rejecting that masculinity was weak and inferior to these types of people. It is all about being manly and that is what I think drives it...if men were comfortable in the masculinity than they wouldn't need to assert their dominance over women and the weak and this would end any notion of a patriarchy. No men do not rule society but the need to be masculine has warped what it means to be a man. That is the problem too many men are insecure about their maleness so change themselves to what society deems manly.

          • Family courts, drafts, and the justice system are very good examples against such claims. If it was made in men's favor, the designer was really bad at it, cause in so many situations men are thrown under the bus, simply for being male. It's not built in favor towards any gender, it is based off of an old way of survival. Now that the world is considerably safer, we can do away with this old system. But fighting sexism with sexism is like trying to clean a toilet by pooping in it. It's just stupid.

              • I suppose it could be classified as patriarchal, or at least often promoting patriarchal values. Though its definitely not a patriarchy.

It's obviously a matriarchal one. Government highly favors women, and tend to protect them and give them more benefits. Women usually are entrusted with raising children. Men are stuck with the dirty jobs, garbage, plumbing, etc.
