Potential reason for Marty's firing

As we know, Marty is one of, if not the best, video game composer in the business. Here's an excerpt in a Polygon article from January of 2013
It's not Marty O'Donnell's fault, really. Games take a team to orchestrate. Music doesn't. And then there's the awards. Don't forget the awards. He can't really be faulted for that either. He didn't award them to himself. That Rolling Stone (among others) considered his work the best example of video game soundtracking in history can't be laid at his feet, really. What was he supposed to do? Make less amazing music? Marty O'Donnell in his Ivory Tower Still, it irks. Everyone plays nice, for sure. Bungie is, after all, a workplace and a team and a good one of both. There is no rancor. Not out where we can see it anyway, but I get a whiff of it here and there. I can smell the irk. "One of the things that I think really gets [Bungie co-founder] Jason Jones's goat sometimes is that there is still one person who can make a contribution that's outsized, and that's Marty O'Donnell," Chris Butcher tells us. "There's only one composer." O'Donnell's studio has been given the moniker "Ivory Tower." As we enter the upstairs production area, Parsons makes a point of pointing out that O'Donnell will frequently come down from his tower to circulate amongst the troops (he calls it "driving his coffee cup around the room"). We watch O'Donnell. He catches shit from the troops, then stops over to say hello, coffee cup in hand. He's in good spirits. Then again, he can afford to be. He's the one with the awards.
Potentially he was over-qualified for the position, and Bungie didn't like his one man control (out of jealousy and lack of power)? Who knows, but this might have contributed. Jason Jones, one of the people listed as irked, is one of the heads of the board of directors.

  • Jason Jones doesn't strike me as the most likeable person, but he doesn't seem like an asshole who would encourage someone to fire their best worker. Just a creepy guy who has no public contact for 10 years. This isn't the Bungie from the Halo days. There's no love anymore there.

  • I call BS on the article. Most of what was said by the Bungie employees was also said in the "Behind the Scenes" DVDs for Halo 2 and Halo 3. I highly doubt they would have shown true animosity toward one of their employees in videos that were created to show fans what working at Bungie is like. I even remember a segment in those videos where Marty and Joe Staten were speaking about how much they hate working with each other because of their different views on how things should be done. But you don't laugh while saying "I hate that guy..." if you actually mean it. I also doubt they would work with someone for 15 years, watch him rise to fame because of his talent and then allow him to work on another title, only to fire him a few months before release of that title out of jealousy. I'm sure they're going to use his work in Destiny... I'm sure his name is going to be in the credits. It makes little sense to fire him now. If that anger was brewing all this time... why not fire him before allowing him to put his stamp on yet another release? It's just illogical. Something else happened.

    • I just can't believe how many things happened just to make a game. Seriously "Enough dead heroes" a track from Halo Combat Evolved. These are the consecuences Bungie had for Destiny, if that's the case, I don't want to buy a game, that made many Bungie originals leave the company with no explanation.

      • A potential cause yes. Though we won't know for sure until someone talks. With name or source.

From what I can gather here are the possible Bungie board of directors: Harold Ryan Ondraus Jenkins Jonty Barnes Jason Jones Pete Parsons Brent Abrahamsen None of these guys are bad/mean people. Not even close. But it seems like they were pissed off about something. What's curious is that almost everyone at Bungie is friends with each other. The board members may be executives but they still act like regular people at Bungie. The fact they terminated Marty's employment is a bad way to break a friendship.

This still does not say anything about Marty leaving Bungie. https://twitter.com/MartyTheElder/status/456303189998841856 is where Marty says it himself. KalAllBea was kind enough to share this link with me. I have difficulty understanding how many fans can be following a game and a company and turn into boycotting their products and Marty's final work for Bungie in a couple of days. Well, there are 2 sides to every story. Hopefully Bungie will elaborate, if they are able to legally. I doubt that Deej wrote his farewell as a lie (as many are saying). I'm sure that there are some at Bungie that did not want to see Marty go. Of course I do not know Marty personally, but some people are very difficult to work with. If that were the case, Bungie would not be able to give a reason publicly. BTW I am NOT saying that he was hard to get along with, just trying to imagine a different Point Of View (POV). Thanks.

          • If they felt he needed to go that's their choice. We are not in the studio day after day and maybe it's not meant to be anymore. His music is great but his departure from the company seems necessary for the whole team apparently.

            • Pretty obv the dude was pushing for probably another raise like it was said on Reddit, because he could ask for one. Too bad Bungie held their ground and didn't overpay. Shit like this has to happen sometimes. Bungie has the budget to replace him and I'm confident their replacement will be solid.

              • Could be two forces working against each other. A game company that makes really good games aka Bungie and a Composer that makes really good music Aka Marty. Maybe there was some head bashing going on.

                • I remember reading that article. I know there has been some resentment of his fame within the company, and the move to their new office didn't help, since he's now one of very few who have their own space. Unfortunately, I have no insight into JJones. He used to be one of my biggest heroes, but I soon realised how little I, or anyone else, knew about him.

                  • So why should they fire Marty over this? Just because he is like his own company doesn't mean he wasn't a vital part of the Bungie team... All players on a team aren't equal, there will always be the athlete and there will always be the scrub.

Anyone else think he made a bad joke to Sir Paul McCartney?.... Or maybe it was because Marty didn't use enough of what Paul McCartney made for Bungie!!.... Still waiting on the question of who is officially on Bungie's "Board of Directors"

                      • Completely stupid for the board of directors, you fire Marty because he is too good? Are you kidding me?

                      • This would make total sense if it weren't for the fact that Destiny's only five months from release now. If it were some sort of slow, creeping discomfort over how much creative control he had, couldn't they have just stuck it out until after release?
