Dear Bungie. From your latest Update here's what Destiny looks like.

I so wish I could go back to the 2013 GDC and start over? Because there's a difference between then and now on how this game plays In my head and it isn't good. Here's the perceived vision. After the 2013 GDC it was very grand and much like a new concept car bought by a Sheik drunk on power, but the vehicle no matter how awesome still tends to depreciate once off the lot. And your marketing has driven it right into a light post of doubt. Destiny has gone from this incredible journey of potential, to basically Forge World mass produced to look like various environments and sizes. It's gone from this wonderful adventure shared by a trio of Space Indiana Jones type archetypes to Halo with double jumps and some third person pull outs. Space magic is now simply a Spartan in a cape launching Wraith salvos. The Last City has gone from these powerful concept art pieces featuring life and potential exploration among interesting NPCs to the last defense of a Skybox. Reduced it seems to nothing more than looking over an edge of the Tower as seen from the onset towards a larger moving picture seen in the earliest trailer as Gustav reads us all a good night story. Players are simply walking around stairs and terminals while the city glimmers in the background as a testimony to the art department with little else to offer but the implied... "you're protecting this... Really, really." While I applaud your double jump, slide, and nifty new Evade abilities due to next gen gaming screaming movement and verticality. It still feels and looks like Reach. That's not a bad thing to me. I'm not that critical of that until you place the catch that happened in the E3 between Destiny and TitanFall. While TitanFall has you hopping and hanging like a team full of Spiderman with guns, it kicked the COD dog to the side and introduced a massive partner in the form of your own personal giant robot. Now this was really brilliant of them. But you Bungie, you had them beat in the collective mind of many of your fans. Why ride robots when you could ride giant space fairing dragons in the form of your own customizable Space ship? Well that dragon is now a Cutscene and basically a teepee sitting in the hangar in Forge World that you can put a chimney on. Hey everyone I can reach the Mars Forge World now because I unlocked the hot water heater for my space cabin ship thingy. Woo. But guys check out this hovering snowmobile which really just screams repainted Ghost as a consolation prize instead. He said snarkly. So there's a couple examples of my perception gleaned from your hype train so far. I've gone from caring to... I'm just hanging out to see how this plays out. The inner child says have hope you curmudgeon. The adult is saying it isn't looking too good kiddo. Let's just call it Halo with capes and hope for good firefight sections in Raids and Strikes and well just call it two years of dwindling return and be happy with that. So there you go, good job. I'm more excited about EVOLVE than I am about Destiny. Playing as the Predator Godzilla has its merits. You guys threw around terms like chapters in a book. But other than the white helmet guy there's doesn't seem to be a Princess of Mars to rescue. I know a lot of your former fan base will simply be placated by multiplayer. But I'm not here to represent them. There's a million of them ready to bombard you with gun tuning and map balance. I'm here to say where's the real magic? Where's the story? Where's the planet destroying monster, where's the adventure? Where's outside your Halo box? Just Deej putting out these flowery cooking with Judy updates has just gotten really old with the 2014 GDC being stifled. That's not his fault. But someone saying guys this is a totally awesome sandwich doesn't really play out well in light of Gearbox and Alien Colonial Marines and the state of the gaming industry's push to patch as you go. Trust us say Rockstar it'll get better eventually. Yeah...okay. Our journey with you has been pay walled it seems. The glimmer of hope to be wrong is being printed out on Game Informer's latest monthly. So here I am at 4 am with this horrible nagging vision of Destiny as a ForgeWorld and Reach repainted. A perception that I hope to see dismantled is now resting on your community manager's tired gourmet prose and my stubborn march to see 9-9-2014 regardless of the lack of visual confirmation and the good will Bungie incurred with my family and I with having a blast with Halo and the remaining glimmers of the 2013 GDC presentation and E3 demo.

  • Good write up mate. Agree with you 100%. With the game due out in 5 months and the beta sometime hopefully in 2 months you really have to wonder if the hype train csn stay on the tracks much longer. Looking at a few responses here, the hype train is dying and people are starting to lose interest due to lack of info and me mail sack which shares nothing new. I think when it gets to September it's going to be a ..'yep destiny is finally here I'll go down after work and probably get it' when really it should have been WOOOOOO DESTINY IS OUT TODAY! I CALLING IN SICK THE REST OF THE WEEK WOOOO DESTINY!!!! I guess I'm losing interest due to the fact of stuff all info being released..and still no word on the beta which is a question that gets asked daily. Woooo destiny...let's just hope you game development skills are a heap better then your marketing skills.

  •
there's a difference between then and now
But thats standard bungie marketing at work. Its like the whole level of space combat/travel - and now, cut scene Mass Effect style from seven years ago. But the trick here is to allow for the bungie hype ... expect something 55% lesser.
Space magic is now simply a Spartan in a cape
Ah yes, but you can buy new outfits (which again) promise to be better than the barbie dress ups we had in reach. So yes, a cape, but a cape well decorated.
threw around terms like chapters in a book
Again, you will get that. There will be 10 years worth of Full games + Comets + DLC ... that's a LOT of content to be brought. It will all run on the same engine, which means bungie is free to focus on easy basic DLC content, chapters in this book if you like.
Just Deej putting out these flowery cooking with Judy updates has just gotten really old
Agree 100% ... but be careful the bungie fanbois will turn nasty if you say this too loud. You also have to remember that DeeJ now has to make 3 months content last 12 months because of the delay ... not an easy trick.
this horrible nagging vision of Destiny as a ForgeWorld and Reach repainted
Welcome to the trap of "Weekly" updates ... the need to say something or look a failure. And sadly saying a lot of nothing is worse than saying nothing at all.

    • Youre being way too harsh, and your analogies are ridiculous. Because during last year's GDC they showed off grognok, you are comparing the entire game to forgeworld. Get over yourself. How do you think the majority game design and level design is for plenty of games out there? So you know one step of the process Bungie uses to build their worlds, that merits criticism by calling it forgeworld? You talk about Evolve and how you are more excited for it, and how Titanfall is great because of giant mechs. Evolve will get old, and Titanfall only grabs one audience. Sure, Destiny doesn't have that one stand out "OH MY GOD, THIS IS SO UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT" thing. But it all together, seems to be something we have never had on consoles before. It melds and mashes up a lot of different genres, and has something for everyone. For the first time in a Bungie game, hell, in a majority of multiplayer games, I am going to spend just as much time in PvE or more than in PvP. Thats unique, thats different. Where you see Halo, I see destiny. The marketing has been pretty bad, the BWUs dont really offer anything other than unnecessary teasing. But I guarantee that things will ramp up during the beta. And your pessimism will change.

Now don't take this as me minimizing your opinion or perspective. I'm simply going to spare you a diatribe and cut straight to the point: IMHO, I think this a black and white case of you de-hyping yourself. To expand: It seems like you are so (in your mind) over waiting for this game to become a tangible thing, that you have rationalized and come up with all these reasons why Destiny won't live up to your expectations. The way I see it: You walked in with preconceived notions of what Destiny will be and now you are literally and/or figuratively "walking out" with even more preconceived notions of what you think Destiny will be. All this without ANY real first-hand knowledge or experience with the IP. My advice: You need to either walk away and occupy yourself with other things or you need to turn off (and compartmentalize) the part of your brain that is on a mission to ruin this for you.

The lack of info is hard for all parties, not just us. I'm not arguing with any particular point you made, it was a well-put post, but I don't think they're doing this 'just because' (nor am I implying that you think this). Can you imagine creating something as big as this and not revealing it week after week? No matter what angle you look at it from, Destiny is a big creation. The game itself could be perceived as a Forge creation with the tools they have, but those tools are developed in-house. Tools aside, everything on their palette is created by them. They don't pull their assets from a website, they have different teams doing different jobs to create the content, and to bring the content to life in the game. Every scenery object, all the terrain, lighting, etc. Is created by them, it isn't just there. They create the content, then assemble it with their tools. Doing that via 3dsMax, Maya, or whatever, can be a pain. Why not create something to have more control over it? I certainly would. It's not like they cut any corners considering they made it possible. How they make it isn't a huge concern for me. The fact that they didn't hard-code everything into the game doesn't make it any lesser. Either way, they're putting a lot of work into their project. Anyone who's worked on something they felt was good knows how terrible it is to hold out on showing the whole thing to people. Most of us just don't and give people every single detail of what we're doing. We have that luxury, they - for obvious reasons as well as the ones we don't know of - do not. I'm not un-hyped. I'm not at the edge of my seat or anything, but I do get that jump in my stomach when I see anything new, that anything could be a simple sentence or a partial segment in a video. We're all at a lull here, we have no new Destiny info, and they don't get to release anything while trying to stay relevant simultaneously. From that perspective, we have the easy part. Feel however you want, my point wasn't to chastise you for not being excited. Just thinking out loud.

          • I have to admit, this video sums up how I feel lately concerning the mail sack. I mean, I understand not letting EVERYTHING out of the bag. But, come on, give us something to chew on. This week I got nearly next to nothing from reading the mail sack. And it seems as though 9/10 times I get more out of the pre mail sack story than I do from the mail sack itself. And, I honestly have to admit that it really gets under my skin when Deej take precious mail sack room to answer things like "first" and "are we there yet?" Or even " I had a question but can't remember what it is." Its almost like destiny has hit a developmental brick wall for whatever reason, and no one knows what to do. So they send Deej out to try and appease us with vague political answers. I dont know..... I want to have faith in bungie and I want to love Destiny, but with new info being locked down and old info being regurgitated to us over and over, I find it very hard to do.

            • AARRghhGH! This pessimism has to go already. Destiny won't have every single item that each one of their fan is asking for, there are millions of us. Some ideas were in the works, some got dropped, new ones popped in. I'm fairly certain that Bungie is aiming at making Destiny as enjoyable as possible for the majority of their fans. Constructive criticism based on experience and facts, trying to guess how cool all this cool stuff is going to work are welcome inputs and fun to read, negative shots in the dark, not so much. As far as the reveal thing, and demands of visual confirmation, do you enjoy movie trailers giving away too much? I don't. We've seen plenty of footage, game play, screen shots, enough to know Destiny will have a great story, music, game-play... the works. Many years, blood, tears, love and sweat (don't quote me on the blood, just heard things) have gone in the making of Destiny, I have a feeling Bungie fans will not be disappointed... and new fans will rise. Prophets of doom, sit on your hands, wait for the beta, enjoy the ride until then ;)

Not only that, but I fear Destiny is morphing into some kid-friendly version of its former self. Where is the grit? Where is the exploration? Where is the excitement? Where are the things that Bungie promised?

Mate, you're just upset because you ain't got info, and you've gone from overhyping this game to underhyping it. But we know next to nothing. All we have are a few enemy types, three classes, a few snippets of locations and some pre pre pre alpha snippets of gameplay. We don't have near enough shit to judge this thing by. So I'll just hope for it and you'll despair over it but we really know nothing.

                      • While I can empathize with you I also have hope that what they have planned for us it will be great. I'm not sure if most of us are at fault for skewing information that has been "fed" to us or if they've built it up more than what it actually is. As far as the lack of info goes lately, I think that all ties into their release date and beta being pushed back. During and after E3 last year the ball was rolling full speed and they were on track. Then the momentum that they had built slowed down with the pushed back date. So here we are stuck in that dead space where they can't release anything new and has us questioning everything. I'm sure there will be disappointments but I also think the WOWs and unexpected will blow the let downs out of the water. Let's give them till E3 and the BETA bud. We'll know more soon.

                      • I don't agree with everything you said but I have to agree that it has been tough to hold on. I understand that they must shroud this info in darkness so we get to savor it more deeply as we experience it for ourselves first hand. With that being said, there have been several underwhelming updates and much more teasing than necessary. I am starting to wonder if they should have just stayed dark longer rather than keeping us on our toes begging for more. Maybe this marketing strategy works for some, but I've been following Destiny's development since they signed an agreement with Activision, and I am struggling to stay hyped. I also agree with the mindset that those of us who have stay tuned in and loyal to this website have not necessarily been even recognized. I don't have the skills or time to make flashy YouTube videos or maintain a website but I have read every article and contributed to this community in several ways for the last few years. Yet we don't even get info first here, nor do we get much interaction with Bungie employees. I don't know what I'm asking for specifically. I appreciate what Bungie does and still believe Destiny will be a fantastic game, but I have to agree that the hype is dying down at an odd time in development. Hoping desperately that the beta rescues us from this drought.

Their updates are crap (I'm sorry), their podcasts are on par with the updates, and they have milked their E3 video sooo much that it is ridiculous. Yet, the Bungieites or Destinians have told me to leave, or have faith and whatever. I'm still waiting, but if you ask me, Bungie should just give us more drawing boards or just keep quiet until release. I'm just glad I don't spend everyday on Bungie.

                            • The game was leaked early on wasn't it? Granted they have said it has been in production for an awfully long time.. my thoughts are that they hyped it early on because of that, and of course Sony didn't help with it either. They started with a vision. Fast forward into the future and in comes Activision with monetary backing for this vision, this masterpiece. They might have had a lot of money from previous MS ventures but not for developing a new IP. If you actually think about it, they just up until recently, had any real time to develope and fully realize this awesome game. They still have till September! One thing I have noticed in their Mail Sack is they are always looking for new talent and divulge a little info on an interview. They are growing and improving. People lose faith easy, but just remember that they do care about you. It's almost like you are saying they are selling out, and I don't mean to put words in your mouth. People got excited when it got leaked, I get that. They shared so much with you that there is not much else. All there is now is beta, a real beta. Not a server stress final build game comes out tommorow beta. You will have your chance to voice, we all will. They will listen.

Destiny never lost my interest because it wasn't fully earned in the first place. Hopefully DeeJ will see your post and think "let's get to work." Make a -blam!-ing impact. Get that release date out there and never leave us completely thirsty for news.
I'm more excited for evolve
