A good friend of mine has been accepted into the Marines and is going off to bootcamp this Spring, and I want to know what sort of going away present I should give him.
He already has a wicked knife and a good watch, so those two options are taken.
My price point is anything under $70.
So, what should I get him? (especially looking for answers from someone who has been in the service before)
(He's hoping to become a scout sniper, he's got everything going for him including the 20/15 eyesight, hunting experience, and short stature)

Give him boots. I mean, he has to go to a camp for them, so those boots could help him succeed. On a more serious note, give him a charm... or fruit juice... I am really bad at getting people gifts. Sorry...

A leatherman is good. But he won't get to use that in basic. He will be issued everything for that. If its for basic, I recommend getting about 10 pictures of friends and family (Wallet sized), having the pictures laminated so they are waterproof, and then put them in those plastic sleeves that come in wallets. Its small, allowed, and durable enough that when he does field training he can take them. Also, have people write on them things that let him know he's loved, and they support him. Basic is hard, and its easy to think that you are cut completely off from friends and family. Something like this could end up meaning alot. Or if he is a sociopath, do this but make it so there is porn on the backside.

Buy him some lube. The military fucks you in the ass and turns you into a mindless drone.

Stamps, paper, envelops, and a really good pen. Trust me when I went into the service, it's what my parents handed to me. That and the knowledge to pack only enough for one day.

Edited by Otthild: 4/6/2014 3:44:03 AMSocks, a lot of socks. EDIT: Because who doesn't love socks? Especially comfy and warm ones. Seriously, socks are amazing.

He'll need boot polish. You simply can't have enough in Basic. Also loads of shaving razor blades. Mainly because if he gets a beret (and I dunno if they do over there), he'll be expected to shave it

All these posts implying he will be jerking it in boot, but my buddy in the Navy said he couldn't pop a boner for shit while in boot.
