Marathon 4 issues

So as you know, it's been leaked that Bungie is currently working on a fourth Marathon game. Which should be pretty exciting seeing how Bungie still has a soft-spot for making sci-fi shooters, and a reboot of one of their earliest games will get a lot of their *new* fans to let them know what this game is/was about. Anyway, with that being said, there comes a lot of risk into reviving this old franchise. Marathon had a lot of obscure mechanics to it. Continuing to use these mechanics in this current gen of gaming might be a bad thing. Mechanics such as, no jumping, low gravity, A LOT of elevators, and most importantly, terminals. Although these are what make Marathon...Marathon, it wouldn't work with today's market, especially with a post-Halo Bungie, critics will be expecting MUCH more. But, along with that ALSO comes a lot of risk. If you were to modernize Marathon, what do you have left? The only thing I see really coming back are a majority of the weapons (despite their obscurity) and health stations (due to people being familiar with Half-Life's system). If Bungie we're to add jumping, remove low gravity, remove terminals while inserting a generic cinematic experience using cutscenes to tell the story..then you practically have, you guessed it, HALO. That's what I fear most about this. This game will most likely turn out Halo. If Bungie were smart, they'd try to keep it as true to the original as possible and not care about the popularity it may or may not bring. Use Doom 3 as an example since it experienced the same giant leap from one generation to another. What it did right and what it did wrong. Personally, terminals should stay. Why? How else would you present the AI in the game? If it'd be any other way then it would automatically be too similar to Halo and the way Cortana was presented. Anyway, I'm really looking forward to this game, but I don't see it being a *huge* success (under Bungie's impressive resume). But who knows, we'll have to find out in 2015 or 2016 whenever this game is released. If you have any other things you'd like to add or suggest please reply. And yes, a lot of "if"s in here, that's what I'm hoping for. [Edited on 08.26.2012 5:15 PM PDT]

  • They should let you jump, but not Spartan high, more like a normal height. Also, they should narrate the terminals for everybody who is too lazy to read. Maybe they could make some cutscenes or something. Anyways, I'm not expecting a whole lot since a very small number of employees are working on it. [Edited on 08.26.2012 5:19 PM PDT]
