Dang It Bungie you said our ship was our horse.

Not a cosmic bus route! My inner kid is not wowed by the news of no manual control of our ships. How Bungie can your inner kids be thrilled with not flying those sweet rides your art department created?

  • Given the amount of storage these ships are supposed to have, I'm hopeful that they will at least set them up as a place where, you can walk around and do things like rearm, change armor, resupply, modify your weapons, etc while in-flight, kinda like SW:KOTOR or SW:TFU. Once you're ready to continue, you set your destination & move to the next cutscene. That should help alleviate some of the ship vs. bus/subway feeling we're getting from this most recent development. Personally, I suspect that one of the future Comet expansions may be dedicated to spaceflight. From a content and memory capacity perspective, it's simply too much to try and cram into one of the 3-4 planned releases, so if it's going to be added, it will likely get it's very own expansion.

  • What is a horse but the original form of transportation?

    • Even if it were just one mission. I'll wait for a dlc. I just hope they take this request seriously.

    • Consider this: In the space between planets, there's really no point in flying your own ship. You're probably traveling at some hypothetical faster than light speed, and there would be nothing to do. That only leaves orbital flight, and in-atmosphere flight. If they allowed in-atmosphere flight, it would negatively impact exploration in Destiny. Say there is some weapon hidden on the top of some mountain, and you have to trek up some overgrown trail to reach the summit. That could all be skipped if you can just fly up to the top. So the only place left to allow flight is in orbit around planets or other objects. But think about how sterile an environment that is. Sure the background will change, depending on where you are, but space is otherwise empty. There are no paths to follow, doors to unlock, treasures to find. The only activity of any real entertainment value would be dog fights. Now sure, a dog fight would be fun once or twice, but I don't think it's something people would end up going back to much. Not when there's a planet below you with loot to find.

      • You guys... You guys... You HONESTLY thought they were going to let you fly the ship? 1. Read Nitron's post. He basically uses logic and sums it all up. 2. A few months ago at E3, during an interview, they were asked about flying the ships. Their response was "we want to limit the number of controllable vehicles in the first instalment" With a bit of brain power, this basically translates to "BUDDY... You ain't flying the ships".

        • At least this lets them focus more on the FPS aspect, our ahip WILL get us everywhere, but they said there will be personal vehicles, as well as vehicles in the enviroment.

        • They obviously want you to explore mostly on foot. Also completely open air to ground exploration would require a lot more resources.

        • Well, your ship is more like a boat that takes you places, your horse is a speeder bike. I'll agree though that free roam space flight would have been epic, but I'm not ruling it out for future games. Bungie has a lot of work to do on this first game and once they nail down the basics they can add all the icing on the cake like space combat and stuff.

        • I know how your inner kid feels. Mine was pretty pissed when I learned that we couldn't manually fly ships. If you could do it in reach, why can't you do it in destiny?

          • Hmm agree with you there OP. They don't have to give us the feature of flying between planets. That would be cool if the design behind it was sound but overall it's not necessary. What's important though is space combat and space levels focused on "exploring with your spaceship". These things can only be as good as the designers, therefore, using the arguments that space flight/combat/exploration is unnecessary or flawed is completely redundant. I understand the game doesn't need to necessarily focus on such features as it is a FPS, but if it is to be epic, it should nonetheless experiment and try to offer uniqueness from the standard first person combat once in a while.

              • They are making a reference to cowboys in the wild west and how it was their main mode of transportation. It does not imply in any way that it will be fully useable, just a main part of our experience.

              • They already said that we wouldn't be able to fly our space ships since E3, but this really makes me wonder why I would even want to spend in game money to customize is.
They called your ship your metamorphical horse when discussing the hangar, not your metamorphical bus.
I see. When I skimmed back thru I accidentally fast-forwarded past that part. Here is my take: You have to remember that the GDC panel was about discussing big-picture game design to inspiring developers and fans. They explained the process by which they honed their ideas and shaped their "world". However, it wasn't meant as a concrete these are the facts press conference about Destiny. It was just a window into their train of thought and how they got there. GDC is an event for developers. I've read through a few of you comments and posts recently and I think I have some idea of where your head's at. My concern is you are so hung up on one aspect, one design decision in Destiny that you're going to ruin the rest of the experience for yourself and let your opinion bleed over into other parts of the game. I could be wrong and you could just be airing your disappointment. However, my advice is don't let yourself become "That Guy". Don't become hyper-focused on one element of Destiny you disagree with when you don't genuinely have an understanding of why it is the way it is. Because the answer is a lot more in-depth, thoughtful, and complicated than the sound-bite that ends up in an interview. The danger with topics like space flight is that no answer shy of "give it to me now" will satisfy people. The community dreamt-up ideas of how things would be before setting foot in the actual game and now some are having issues adjusting their mindset. It's expected and understandable, but preconceived notions are dangerous with new IPs. They need to be reigned in at this point. Otherwise, Destiny will never live up our expectations. Let Destiny be the vision that Bungie has for it. Even now, we still don't have a complete picture of what's going on. So it's best not to string together facts with assumptions, based on speculation of how we think the final product will shape up. The lack of spaceflight may make perfect sense in context to the game mechanics and the way the story is told. Who knows... We'll have to wait and see.
