Is the ESRB to strict?

Yes

No

Do you think it is? I think that there are a lot of M games that should be T games (I know that nobody cares about ratings, but it has kind of bothered me). Like Halo should definitely be T. Any others?

  • It's better than the government regulating games.

    • I think that they should understand how kids are nowadays and just agree with it lowering the standards. We all know its only going to get worse.

    • No, but after playing Shin Megami Tensei IV for awhile on the 3DS, I'm beginning to think an M for Mature wasn't good enough, and AO Adults Only should have been on it. I'll share a few pictures as to why, mostly on the designs for some of the Demons in the game. These can be explicit, I'm warning everyone now, but this is about a M game on the #Gaming board so warning ahead of time. 1. First one is about a monster called Master Therion:
http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Master_Therion?file=294_-_Master_Therion.jpg
2. Second is about a demon called Diana(in-game the nipples are edited off, but it still contains the rest of the design):
http://megamitensei.wikia.com/wiki/Diana
There's more but I don't trust not getting moderated by some of the other ones that I've seen, I'm hoping a Moderator would give me a chance to explain them if that situation does arise though.

      • I agree with you OP. The ESRB is too strict and its rating system is massively outdated. They should change it, but the problem is that the ESRB is self-regulating and accountable to nobody. They are neither created nor regulated by the government (except in terms of their financials/tax-exempt status). They have no reason or impetus to change, and it seems highly unlikely that they ever will unless they end up doing something so outrageous that it results in public outcry. And that seems unlikely too.

        • I wouldn't say it is too strict but I would say that there needs to be a rating between T and M. Here in the UK we have a 15 rating. With America's current system Halo is rated the same as GTA which I think is stupid.

Yeah games like gta 5 should be AO and games like halo shiuld be T. I started playing Halo Combat Evolved when I was 9.

        • I don't think it's too strict, but they need a rating between teen and mature that's not really age specific but just alerts parents that the game could be violent. (This rating could apply to games like halo or CoD, that aren't really that violent but parents should be aware of what kids can make of it.)

        • PEGI system is better. But it's not like people who sell the games care anyway.

I don't think they're strict enough. How isn't Killzone, Gears of War, Dead Space, Mortal Kombat or Heavy Rain rated AO?

          • It's pretty outdated. By it's logic, a 16 year old is too young to play Halo.

            • Strict? They don't enforce anything. They are recommendations based on pre-determined factors. Nothing I have a problem with.

            • Halo 1, 2 and 3 are M are rated M because of the Flood, and 4 is M possibly because of the Composing scene. ODST and Reach should be T, though.

            • They're not too strict, however, I like the PEGI rating system better.

                  • Perhaps. If you ask me, that comes from the assumption that our society is more tolerant of certain subjects, like language or gore, than it was in the past. I can't imagine what the reaction to a game with as much visceral gore as Gears of War or Dead Space would have been 20 years ago. Today, it's not that uncommon. Back in the day Halo might have deserved an M in the eyes of the ESRB, but most people today would probably consider it a hard T. The ESRB just hasn't moved as quickly with addressing these tolerances, though they have relaxed some. It's worth pointing out that sexuality in modern games seems to be rated just as hard as it always was. That's a whole discussion in and of itself.

                    • No Not enforced enough Not enough awareness either Are the rating systems good? Yes. Does the ESTB need to be more widely known and used And there should not be a actual enforcement on the federal level but on the family and personal level.

                          • I think we should switch to the PEGI system, it makes a lot more sense and parents would probably notice the ratings better.

                          • I feel like "teen" is a bit to childish. I honestly feel like "m" should be toned to 16. But I know Fox News would go crazy and parents would ape shit, so I don't expect it.
