Thank you, environmental regulations!

Environmental regulations can be a pain. I've run into them at work, and have seen other people deal with them at home. Particularly when the nature of the regulation is procedural, and not based on any acts of pollution. For example, the company I work for was fined for not following a set procedure properly, even though we do take great care to manage our waste responsibly. A friend of mine ran into big trouble landscaping his yard. He filled in a low spot that was apparently deemed wetlands. So, I can understand frustrations with environmental regulations, and wouldn't mind some specific reforms, but I have to say, I am very thankful they exist. Today, the story out of China is that 100 tons of dead fish showed up overnight. As bothersome as regulations are, I'm pretty sure no one in the Western world would want to live without them. Where manufacturers just dump ammonia into the water supply. Where there isn't even a scale to measure all the bad shit in your air. Where the unregulated use of fertilizer and pesticides has made farmland toxic. No thank you. Thank you, EPA. Whatever the cost is to the economy, you're worth it.

 • Economists call these externalities. In a market, there are two parties. The producers and consumers. As a lot of China is export based, the consumers are Americans who as a whole don't make purchasing decisions based on the affects on the environment thousands of miles away. The producers don't care as markets tend to have short term profit motives (get paid today, who cares what happens tomorrow). Fixing externalities require government intervention. Subsidies/tariffs, criminalization, tort law. In most cases, you would expect to see change undertaken by government, both US and Chinese, which to some extent you've seen. Problems have gotten better but they do still exist. Usually this happens in rural areas most where the impacted individuals are few and have very little voice politically.
