Anyone Else Want Guild/Fireteam/Area Chat?

I'm sure Bungie knows what they're doing - I just haven't seen much community discussion about the option for different chat channels. I for one would love the ability to switch between an open "Guild/Clan" channel, a direct 'fireteam/group' channel - and the 'local area' channel (for public events/PvP etc). After looking at the controller scheme for a while, this idea dawned on me. The way it'd work, is instead of having your 'emotes' on all buttons of the D-Pad, they were moved to a single button (say left) which brings up a mini-menu of the available emotes (selected as they are in the linked controller scheme). (More detail: "Left" brings up menu, which displays all available emotes relative to their D-Pad button; akin to how to the controller scheme shows them currently) That enables the D-Pad to be used for a number (3, to be exact) of other functions (I wonder how the Ghost was 'called' - and also how the weapon was lowered/raised) "Down" could be weapon lowering/raising; "Up" could call the Ghost - and "Right" could switch between the different "Chat Channels". I'm not sure if you, dear reader, have used TeamSpeak/Vent/Mumble etc in a guild before - but it's often a great place full of people bantering away, organizing raids/PvP, or just chatting about their favorite TV show (Firefly FTW) I know Bungie will look after us, but just figured I'd share my thoughts with anyone interesting in reading them Quick clarifications: - By "area" chat, I mean 'public event/team' etc - My entire idea focuses around using voice chat, not text/typing

  • I like the idea of also implementing proximity chat, but it is only activated if an emp takes out your communication systems. I think it would provide a dynamic variation of combat that would be really cool.

  • This game really does need a prox/area chat system. It would bring life to the game and make it a whole lot easier to get attention of those you want in case you want to show them some loot chests or something

  • Clan Chat would be nice that way you could link up with Clan members. Right now I see little reason for clan since you cannot access members in the game in any way. Using xbox live to link up is cumbersome, some friends may be in different party's. Would be nice to listen in on and chat with clan members in one area. Need to have clan on the roster instead of just friends and area.

Guild chat would be widely accepted with open arms amongst the player base community. Often utilized with many other "Persistent World" games (MMO's). Although it would be a wonderful tool to use when trying to communicate with guild members in several different locations, I can see why this may not happen. Requiring players to meet up in a way does add somewhat of a community aspect. Causing players to have councils, gatherings, meet ups. That being said, guild chat would still be nice to have happen. Fireteam chat (Skipping, not much to say there). As for local area chat now, this is something I can comment on. Being that I played a few "Persistent World" (MMO) games, area chat vocally would be horrendous (Such as being in Destiny's Hangar areas or big cities. Now as for public events or same team PvP, that would be something more reasonable. Would be nice during public events to have a simple button/option appear on screen to merge fireteam chat with public event chat. Would be a nice little addition to have coming in saying "Hey, you need help?" and another team replying "Helly yeah! We're running low on ammo and need to get out of here!". With that though, as with anything else can come certain problems such as the question: How many people can enter a public event? After that, public event ends and people that entered public event chat gets dropped once the button/option appears on screen to leave or simply player leaves area. PvP based on scale will most likely have team chat, it makes sense. Now if you're talking about being able to chat with either side, not happening. Otherwise you would lose tactics, call outs, and planning while competing against one another. Something that would be funny though is proximity voice. Say that you assassinate someone from behind, and for a brief moment the players/players you are next to here you say "Got you B!#&@". Would be funny to mess with players around a corner calling people out to come get you first, or make bluffs saying you have more teammates around the corner. Back to local area, I have one idea that may be practical rather than 1,000+ people all talking at once. Simply walk up to someone and ask to chat via pressing a button/option, in reply the adjacent player would do the same to "accept" or "decline". When doing this you engage in a conversation with that player like you would in real life, being next to that person. Proximity would be a mess in largely populated areas (Keeping the Hangar's in mind). Having the option to invite (have a conversation with) other players would also work very easily doing the same thing. One button/option to have to engage in conversation with nearby players via ask/reply would work great. And then afterwards, people press a button to leave conversation or walk away to disengage. Let me know what you guys think. Should I make the last part be it's on topic?

    • I would love to see an "area chat". You would be able to listen to people who are near you, and if you want you could swap between chat channels with your fireteam, or a party team.

    • Your problem is; you're thinking too much in terms of traditional MMO games based on the PC. In those games there are multiple chat channels as well as multiple voice chat channels available in-game as standard...Destiny is releasing for consoles...therefore why would they spend the extra money to develop different chat systems when there are already voice chat features in place for all consoles? If you want to communicate with people then hit your system's menu button and add your fireteam to party chat, or invite your raid to party chat...it's easy, it's already in place, and doesn't require any extra resources to use.

    • Excelent idea and great construtive discussion. I'm certain that Bungie will definitly take all the comunity feeds-back and sugestions in consideration. In addiction, as stated here already, the potencial of the new consoles goes much further than simply better graphics and frame rate. I know that microsoft made some huge political mistakes, that fortunatly were recognised by them, but the potencial of the new kinect (first version is terrible) in terms of gameplay can be imense. Not as a controller substitute, but as an addition. Lots of comands can be added by the kinect, as it can with the touch pad in the PS4 controller. Let's see how all will evolve, with the certanty that if there is a company that can pull off all this great ideas, is Bungie!

    • I'm not a fan of kinect or the playstaion eye, but it is there, and comes standard. You could put you hand up to your ear and then the D-pad left and right would become the chat channel select. Just throwin that out there. Though it would take your hand off the contoller...

As someone that would like to coordinate raids I think your idea here has merit. The limitations of the xbox controller can be overcome by what your are suggesting. I think that PC gaming has had this over consoles for some time. I am thinking about how easy it is in WoW. I would like to be able to edit that list as well. Personalize it on bnet. What are your thoughts?

      • I like it, reminds me a bit of abes Odyssey, where you held one of two shoulder buttons, then press one of the four main buttons, giving you 8 from 2. i also think the chat interface should be a solid radio, like.fallout 3 pip boy. with faction groups and fireteams assigned their repective frequencies, that way you can be "out of range" and depend on different means of comms.

I'm liking these multiple chat channels. They would really take the socialization aspect of Destiny to a whole new level. Fireteam chat: used primarily during co-op missions with your buddies Guild/Clan chat: used to help you locate clanmates to form fireteams for missions, meet up to form teams for faction wars, etc. Area chat: used exclusively public spaces to casually chat with anyone, (maybe trade goods, perhaps?), clan recruitment, so on and so forth Switching between these has to be easy, and I think your D-pad layout meets that requirement. I think that area chat should only be an option in public spaces. We won't be encountering anyone aside from our fireteam outside of these spaces, so such a chat option should be limited to public areas. Fireteam and Clan chats should obviously be available all the time. Also, in my opinion, we should be forced into public chat whenever we choose to participate in a public event. It'll likely be necessary to communicate with fellow players during these events, and I personally don't want to be trying to coordinate a strategic attack on a legion of Cabal while another fireteam chooses to keep chatting away in their fireteam chat. Another thing to consider is the type of chat we'll be using during competitive PvP. I'm thinking we'll be thrust into a "Team" chat just like we are for any standard online competitive multiplayer game nowadays. You wouldn't be able to toggle chats during competitive multiplayer. Thanks OP for the great thread. You've always got a lot of good input to offer these forums. Always look forward to reading your posts.
