Race: Beyond Aesthetics (For Game Element Consideration)

Alright, I know about the interviews talking about how race is just cosmetic, so no need to remind me (and if you don't know, I do suggest searching for the topics containing interview links. They are great). I would like to take a minute and argue on behalf of adding a small bonus to the races in order to diversify, yet balance, the choice of choosing whether you play as the confirmed Human, Awoken, or Exo in combination with the confirmed classes of Titan, hunter, and Warlock (No priority was given on names). As it stands, race in RPGs (follow me on this) utilize a specific buff and penalty in selecting race in order to add more depth to the kind of character you are attempting to create in the world provided. In my opinion, race outweighs class in terms of personal story, and story is what makes a Bungie game so intriguing. Class is merely the clothes you wear, Race is the skin you must deal with, and with a story of survival, there should be both boons and banes to the races. Examples of race in RPGs are beings such as the classic Elf, gaining a +1 bonus to Dex with a -1 penalty to Strength, or the Human, gaining an extra skill each level. This choice does not necessarily bring a commitment to a specific class, but rather adds a possible handicap, or challenge, to the player which would allow for a story to be created by the player and worked upon. Using the examples mentioned above, a player could choose to be an Elf and take the class of a heavily armored warrior (attempting ambiguity of references). The story for this character could be that the Elf didn't grow up with archers or druids, but instead grew up in a city raised by a strong human who was captain of the guard and valued all races as near-equal. To make him proud, the character took up the sword and shield and diligently trained to become one of the best guards in the city. Even though the character's frail frame could barely move in the armor or swing a regular sword, the Elf character persevered and adapted to the handicaps dealt as an Elf. Destiny's races are currently aesthetic choices, which in the RPG world is unheard of, and I must admit that is quite a bold and brilliant move to unify the choice of race rarely used in modern RPGs. It, as the staff at Bungie have roughly stated, allows the player to not regret the choice they made when creating their character. I would agree with this concept except for one fact that has already been confirmed: Players will be able to create multiple characters. With the ability of creating multiple characters comes the ability for freedom of choice, variety, and removal of regret. In my opinion, though I am sure there are statistics available for this, players tend to use more than one character in RPGs (Both Offline and Online if applicable), usually due to the fact that there is so much possible player growth (in the form of skills, skill combinations, attributes, and items enhancement), no single character can do everything. Personally, I agree with this, as it promotes player importance within the game, which promotes both friendly competition and cohesive camaraderie in online play, and replay value for offline adventures. As Destiny is attempting to take elements of the RPG (MMO or not), this particular request should be considered one of the priority elements in the game's final stages. To make sure there are no regrets in choosing race, benefits should affect each class, while the penalties (if any) should act as mentioned: a challenge to the player to overcome adversity in a story of survival. A suggestion for the race benefits in Destiny could be like so (Note: The names and numbers are choices I have come up with for the sake of clarity and thought and are not confirmed by any member of Bungie. Again, this is merely to promote thought and consideration): Human: +1 Weapon Specialization (Any Weapon Type adds one to each of its parameters) (Titan), +1 Reload (Hunter), +1 Skill Cooldown (Warlock) Awoken: +1 Shield Recharge (Titan), +1 Light of the Traveler Ammo/Time (Hunter), +1 Skill Damage (Warlock) Exo: +1 Damage Reduction (Titan), +1 Stability (Hunter), Minor Regeneration (Warlock) I have chosen to omit negative affects for now, as I would like to hear thoughts on whether this is a reasonable request, and would be honored to hear back from Staff and community members. Thank you for your time.

  • Having races have different small bonuses/penalties is a horrible idea. That would affect most people's choice in which race they would be. I love it as it is, where I can choose exactly the race that I want to be rather than the race that is "better".

    • I think it sounds good but in pvp combat, unless they were very minimal, it'd really make it frustrating so you might as well just leave it as cosmetic

      • No, that sort of thing ALWAYS unbalances the game. And d&d is a terrible example, it's horrifically unbalanced. My brother plays it a ton, and is always telling me about this or that broken build. I do hope race does more than change your face. Maybe race exclusive bases or visual customization options for your ships or armor? Like the Awakened get glowing runes on their armor or ships? But no stat buffs. having it affect the world and add to your identity would be more enjoyable anyway. It would be cool if even an awoken titan is kind of mystical and glowy while an EXO warlock is dark and spiky (if you use the racial armor customizations).

No. I don't want races to have bonuses. EDIT: I don't want to worry about the bonuses when I pick my race. If I want to be a human I wouldn't want the bonuses of being a exo to get in the way.

            • I think it would be a bad choice to add benefits to certain races. It puts off an unnecessarily contested feeling. I don't want to have to make any decisions on race aside from look. Stats take away from a races appeal physically and canonically.

              • I'm gonna say no, people in MMOs and RPGs almost always develop some kind of meta where the deal usually is "get this particular item from this particular boss, and your character will become super powerful by level 10" or something like that. besides, I like the idea of choosing something just based off a gut feeling in an RPG.

                  • Something super, super minor maybe. But I'd rather play as a different character anyway. A Fallen would reload faster; it only makes sense, right?

                        • The game will be awesome either way. I do however think it is a slight waste to have different races if they are only their for their cosmetic appeal (and im sure a small part of the story line). They don't necessarily have to give the different races different attributes or skill points that would make them more or less effective in PvP. What they could do is something that affects only the single player part of the game but does not cross over to the PvP side. For example something like fallout did just with the different genders. Females automatically got a boost to speech and were more likely to get what they wanted in the game early on, but obviously were not as strong. I know we are supposed to be able to purchase things in a marketplace like environment (the tower) in destiny, so perhaps the differences could come into play their and affect your experience only within the campaign. Slight variations like this could be kept out of PvP to avoid any drastic unbalances to the game play.

                        • It'd be nice if the races had some effect that didn't bother with gameplay. Like Exo being able to interface with older computers and whatnot, peeling back a little more into the events that happened or showing how life was during the Golden Age. Maybe the Awoken could do...Awoken things? Like...Magic tricks! And humans...I got nothing.

                        • Nope. One thing I hate about a lot of MMOs (I know destiny isn't an MMO) is that races have perks. This makes it so that if you want to be competitive you have to pick certain race/class combos in order to play something to it's fullest potential and this limits player freedom and creativity.

I can't help but disagree. I notice that people really want to categorize Destiny. Often people talk as if Destiny needs to satisfy certain requisite minimums from every genre that it might borrow from. I don't think that's necessary at all. While for the purposes of organization it's necessary to try and describe Destiny somehow, why are some people expectations affected by that as well? Why should Destiny conform to some RPG standards just because it has some RPG elements? The goal of most games is not simply to make another check-list game based around some carved-in-stone archetype, it's just to make a fun experience. More to the point, I think this would damage the immersion. It seems that the way Bungie's talked about classes with comments like there not being large enough difference to make you regret anything , they're not going for the traditional class bound RPG. It seems more as if Destiny is a shooter where the RPG-esque elements exist to allow a player to express themselves. Race selection makes a big difference visually and I believe the idea is to allow players the freedom of expression without worrying that they may have picked a sub-optimal race for their class/build.

                            • However...I also see the logic in doing away with that system...in most people it frees up a lot of choices for them. Most gamers are like I have to do a certain combination because they saw online that it is best! Bungie is forcing people to break out of that mindset.

I think the races being on an even footing helps with a feeling of togetherness important in a co-op experience. I'm quite happy to make a race choice based on aesthetics rather than wondering what perk is gonna serve me most down the line; I'll no longer have this niggling thought in the back of my mind asking if I've done the right thing. With the differences already between classes, perhaps Bungie think having the races on an even keel will give players a higher sense of unity, like "we are Guardians". And having race specific abilities might break that immersion? I agree that it's not something you see too often though. But I'm sure they have their reasons.

                                • I would like the race/class perks, but that is because once I make up my mine about a certain combination like that I don't look back once.
