There will be no cross-platform play but you can swap customised characters between the Wii U and 3DS versions[/b] Though there will be some interaction between the Wii U and 3DS versions of Smash Bros, you won't be able to indulge in cross platform play like you can in, say, Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate. The reason for this, Sakurai told Joystiq, is because the stages and storyline are very different between the two versions. Players will, however, be able to transfer their customised characters between platforms. What this will entail is still unclear, only that it's not costumes, and not something you'll have to earn through repetitive grinding. [b]2. No touch controls [/b] Thank goodness! The fact that touch controls won't be used in the Wii U and 3DS games will be music to many fan's ears, we're sure. It's a balance issue, Sakurai explains, aimed at not giving Wii U GamePad users an unfair advantage. Speaking to IGN, Sakurai said: "You can think of situations where, if you implemented touch controls on Wii U, then the GamePad player would have advantages over other players. We want to balance evenly across Wii U and the DS versions, so there's a balance issue there, which means you would have to avoid using touch screen controls." [b]3. The 3DS version could limit the amount of characters available in the Wii U game[/b] Probably the most important fact to come out of these interviews, Sakurai has said that limitations of 3DS may prevent him from including a vast array of characters. Sakurai told Kotaku: "The reality of the situation unfortunately is that there are certain limitations on the 3DS. So we're forced into the situation where we may need to reduce some characters to a certain degree, but we're really working hard in order to include as many characters as possible." He also emphasised that the inclusion of Mega Man in the upcoming Smash Bros is a "special case" and that adding third-party characters to the series is not a priority. The reason for this, he explained to IGN is due to the difficult nature of adding characters owned by other companies to the title. "Even in cases like adding Pokemon characters, there are a lot of parties involved and there's a lot of wrangling. It's much tougher than people can imagine," he said. [b]4. There are no current plans for DLC[/b] Though the Villager and yoga-based action of the Wii Fit Trainer may leave you hungry for more, you shouldn't expect DLC. Sakurai told IGN it's "not on the cards." When asked about the possibility of DLC, he said: "At the current time we have no plans. I consider my job at this point, and my main responsibility, to make the Wii U and 3DS versions the best and the fullest experience possible." [b]5. Tripping is gone[/b] Hallelujah. A mechanic despised by many Smash Bros fans, tripping has finally been removed. When you dashed too much in Smash Bros Brawl, there was a random chance that you could trip over, something that annoyed many competitive players. That's now gone. This is to complement the new gameplay direction, which Sakurai has described as being somewhere between the white-knuckle competition of Melee and the drawn-out slugging of Brawl. There's also the possibility that tripping, like touch controls, would have been difficult to implement on the 3DS and would have given an unfair advantage to Wii U players. [b]6. The final names[/b] This iteration of the franchise will be suffix-less. Super Smash Bros Wii U and Super Smash Bros 3DS are the final titles for the instalment, and this will not change. Sakurai has officially confirmed that the series is going back to basics and will not use some fancypants, hyper-aggressive suffix for the title. What would they have even called it? Super Smash Bros. Dust-up? Super Smash Bros. Scrap? Perhaps it's best that they quit while they were ahead. [b]7. The Wii U and 3DS versions may not launch at the same time[/b] Though this is the first time that a Smash Bros. title will be coming to a handheld, it may not launch concurrently with its Wii U big brother. Sakurai didn't tell IGN which one would launch first but the 3DS version is proving challenging. Although Sakurai didn't say which one was further along, he did mention how incorporating some characters on the 3DS version was a challenge, and gave the example of the Ice Climbers. [/spoiler]
