Army or Marines?

I've got a good 4 years to make up my mind. I plan on finishing college first and I plan on joining ROTC while I'm there. My only problem is that I can't decide which branch to choose! Can some of the members here in the military tell me which branch they chose, why and how much they enjoyed it? General discussion about the U.S. military is also welcomed. Thank you.

Army if you don't want wannabe Navy/Army -blam!-s running around you acting like they are bulletproof Not even the Navy likes the Marines, they are just too stupid. Also the Army is better equipped too and if you get a god tier MOS like 21B, you are going to have a good time.

  • I was army infantry for 3 years. I enjoyed if very Much. I loved my job, of course it was mixed with ALOT of BS to deal with but that's any job. Until I -blam!-ed up my spine and they neglected me medically and then kicked me out with a no work order and 700 a month which I barely got lifted so I can work again. Go Air Force or navy. You'll be glad you did.

I was going to go marines until I found out my peanut allergy disqualified me (no joke). It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to do infantry, you'll most likely have a better time in the Marines Corps. If you want to do medical, you would want the army or Navy, if you want to do engineering then to Air Force. It all comes down to what MOS you're looking at.

Metal Gear Rex was designed for the Army; Metal Gear Ray was designed for the Marines. Tough choice indeed.

  • If I had to join the military, i'd probably choose Air Force. But it would take a draft for me to join the military.

  • ROTC is designed to fill reserve officer vacancies. You can go active duty after college but its not guaranteed. You have very little to no say in what job you do. If you were to enlist, you get the job you pick. I can tell you the difference between the Army and the Marines, if that's what you're looking for but I always encourage people to talk to (not just 1) recruiters from both branches from different areas.

  • I'm in a Marine Corps-run class and they act like the other services are pussies. No matter that I tried to explain to them that the Marines are just amphibious Infantry...

Well the marines are kind of similar to special forces I think. I'd recommend joining the army, proving yourself as an infantryman and then join the army special forces. Then you get the experience of being both a soldier and spec ops.

  • Depends, really. Becoming a Marine is more about honor than about anything else. It's really just to say that you were tough enough to become a Marine, since it's the hardest branch to get into. In the Army you get better equipment and funding, plus I hear you see less combat in general. I also assume you get better job opportunities after leaving the Army since the jobs are more diverse.

  • Marines = brainwash you so you think you're invincible Army = doesn't brainwash you Just know when you talk to the recruitment person they'll lie to you about some stuff. Also, what job do you want?

  • Do you want to see actual combat (and I have no idea why you would)? Then go for the marines. I hear soldiers have far less chance of actually fighting and dying.

    • They both have fundamentally different jobs within the military. The Marine Corps serves as an all purpose augmentee to any national security issue the country may face. Unlike the other branches, the Marine Corps has no principle domain it operates in. Instead, it sends assets to whatever contingency arises. For example, the Navy and Airforce both established a no-fly zone over Libya, and the Marine Corps assisted their efforts. In Afghanistan, the Marines serve as a second land army to our actual Army. Because of this, the USMC focuses on the tactical, not strategic, level. The Army is primarily concerned with operations on the ground (its primary domain).
