Should governments stop making laws for technology?

Basically we have all these governments and politicians all in their 40's to 70's dictating how the internet and technology should be handled. Should they leave those laws to be implemented by those who knows how the technology is used? For example; Laws have been passed to stop trolling because people are telling others to go and die, now the lot of us on here being a troll is just winding somebody up (Pulling their leg) not making death threats. Or again trolling is "illegal" but the definition of the troll is all wrong they hear it's a popular term online and use that to brand the wrong people and strangely giving trolls a bad name. Also things like video games are being heavily scrutinized, they didn't or don't play video games but the younger generations do, in what way do they feel they know the subject well enough to start pushing laws through? As far as im concerned these old bastards can't program a DVD recorder or set their time and date on a computer and the LOL = Lots of Love (Brits know what I mean). So should the technology and internet based laws be put aside for the generation that knows more about them? This would probably stop these "snooping laws" even being considered.

    • Well... technology laws =/= internet laws. If I build a giant death robot capable of destroying cities, I don't think it would be a bad thing if there was a law against giant death robots destroying cities. As for video game laws, I think we're good as is.

    • What? Are you seriously considering the governments to just ignore the biggest part of our species at the moment? Technology, computers, and the internet literally make this world run nowadays. To make a government not pass technology laws means to make that government outdated and vulnerable.

I don't think you fully understand how laws come into effect. These 40-70 year old politicians don't sit there and think up laws, they delegate that duty to government think tanks that are normally comprised of lawyers and experts in the given field (plus a token politician or two). Once the legislation is in its final draft they then put it before the HoC and HoL (in the UK) so it can become law. The idea that a bunch of old fogies, who don't understand this new-fangled technology, are pulling laws out of their ass is just wrong.

        • It will probably fix itself as people who grew up with the internet go into office.

        • In some fields, yes. In others, probably not. I'm finishing up my paper on criminal use of encryption, and there is definitely work that can be done in some fields.

        • Maybe, but something seriously needs to be done about piracy. You can complain all you want about how Piracy "Isn't that big" or that it's somehow "Good" but it really screws over the developer and is just a middle finger to them. I'm afraid that if online Piracy does become a big thing, if legislators try to do something to fix it, people will just lash out at them because the online community (which consists of pirates and people who can't even vote) bullshits others into believing that legislators don't know what they're doing. Also, pretty much everyone in Congress has an up to date computer, smartphone, and the Capitol Building itself has state of the art technology.
