My Halo 3 just takes a long time to read and then says unreadable or unrecognizable disc. There are no scratches and this is the only game that I have ever had that has done this.

hey guy i just started getting this problem and i didn't read all 120 pages so i'm just assuming when i say this but i think so far, i got it the worse. let me start from the beginning. on tuesday, july 21, 2009, i was playing halo 3 for a couple hours then went to sleep. i left the game in there, even though i knew it can cause scratches, but i didn't know it would screw up my 360. so on wednesday, july 22, 2009, i tried to play again and now i get the unreadable disk message. i'm like damn i shouldn't have left it in. so then i go back to the dash board and it freezes. turn it off, turn it back on, then sign back in. decide to see if my DVD drive was messed up so i put in armored core 4, works perfectly. i take a look at my halo, no scratches, and i clean it with a soft cloth just in case, the cloth i use to clean my iPod Touch. pop it back in and i get the message again. then it freezes when i press A for the message to disappear, it doesn't even make it back to the dashboard. so i turn it off, turn it back on, then try to sign back on. but when i sign in it tells me i need to update my xbox or it'll sign me out of XBL. i say ok and do the update. after it downloads the update it restarts my 360, it freezes. try signing back in on my brother's account and same thing, asks for update. on some occasions, like 1 every 5 times, it'll not freeze. and when it doesn't freeze i'll play UFC Undisputed, Armored Core 4, Tales Of Vesperia, as well as other games smoothly. turned it off when i'm done and works fine when i turn it back on and play games. but when i popped Halo 3 in again hoping it'll work, it freezes my 360 again.after updating it about 3-4 times and working back to normal i don't put halo 3 in anymore. thinking it's all good as long as i don't try to play halo, just earlier my brother wanted to watch something on netflix so he turns it on and signs onto his account. asks him to update and freezes on him. i like playing Halo 3 and i like Xbox 360 but there's obviously something wrong with Halo 3. Halo 3 is causing something in the 360 to malfunction. Of course that's my theory because of my experience starting just 2 days ago. Well to see if my Halo 3 is corrupt somehow, i'm going to ask my brother in-law for my old 360 that i fixed, it had the no-video. and if halo 3 works perfectly on that 360 then i can assume it's the 360 malfunctioning by itself or just due to the fact that i left it in. and in order for me to prove that i would like others that had problems with halo 3 and xbox 360 not working together to post what their activity was with the 360 before it malfunctioned. in order to fix this we all need to work together. and i'm hoping that after 120 of this problem that bungie and microsoft are doing something to fix this too. if not i'm switching to PS3 because this is my second 360, first had RROD and no-video within months after i got it back from microsoft. and now this second one is really ticking me off.

Whenever I start up Floodgate or finish The Storm, "You're disc cannot be read!". Damn shame. I wanted to glitch out of Floodgate.

happens everytime i try to play on sandbox. no matter what i do. i re downloaded the mythic maps. and it still gives me the error. this had happened before with foundry. but it stopped. what the fu*k?

The only map I get the Disc is unreadable error now is on foundry. Which is not on the disc anyway.... [Edited on 05.23.2009 3:36 PM PDT]

Yea same thing is happening to me. I get the error with all three of my halo 3 discs. I get it when my HDD is on or off the xbox. I get it if halo 3 is saved to the HDD. All my other games work fine.

I had been playing other games, Fable 2, Gears 2 mostly(without any problems). And today I decided to fire up Halo 3 and play with the skulls on the Covenant map and at the point in the game after I destroyed the wraith and those brute vehicles it says "Disc Unreadable Please clean it with a cloth and try again" It even gives me that error after I thought I could get around it by installing the game on the hard disk...wierd think that would have bypassed that issue. I think maybe that stupid avatar update had to do with it or maybe my system is dying.

All my other games work fine but halo 3 i get 2 the bumgie logo and i try to instal hard drive i get to 42% and again it says disk canont b red. the only way it works is if i take out the storage device bur then i cant sing in. (duhh) if anyone can answer sned me a messge (2o my profile). My disk actualy cracked, its the only disk which seems to have any server issue like that.

No, no - the problem is not the disk in most cases, it is the xbox itself. not too long ago i had a faulty xbox which would crash all the time and I would get the "disk is unreadable" message a lot. I could not load lots of the larger maps, so matchmaking was a bad idea. I recently sent it in to microsoft, their staff sent me a new xbox, and i am again enjoying bungie's best work though matchmaking. If the problem is the disk, it is easily fixed and i dont know why anyone would need to go online in order to get told to clean the disk. [Edited on 05.14.2009 3:35 PM PDT]

Ok i got an xbox arcade for christmas and halo 3 limited eddition. I wasnt satisfied with the regular maps and many thing yhu cant do with out a hdd. so i got one(20 gigs) off ebay. i got the heroic map pack first(because it was free), then the once it was all downloaded i went to play the game... i got all the way to ... ok ready for this ... the microsoft logo. as yhu can expect i was pretty p.o.ed so i then realized that all my map variants and stuff lyke that were in the hard drive so i moved them all back to the stock mem. the game worked fine ... but then the maps wouldnt load. so i downloaded them again and now gess what..... the game wont work again saying disk read error bla bla bla just lyke before. i tried numerous time to play the game. finally i thought of trying to play it with out my brand knew hdd in and the game worked perfectly. i am very angry at these results. [note] i am a noob to just about every xbox lingo so iff some one couuld explain the answer too my delema in an easy to under stand way it would be much apprecated. -thanks

i did have that problem on construct i couldnt start the game i took me to the dashboard and it use to freeze on snowbound but i recently got a new xbox and i didnt have any more probs

toothpaste trick ftw worked for me when my halo disk became unreadable

um ive had this problem witth my disk b4 but i fixed it by ripping it 2 my HDD it never freezes or says: Disk is unreadable, because when u play it from the Hard Drive all of the things in the game are backed up there so even if ur disk was attacked by a grinder it will still play

I have encountered the problem for the first time today. After playing for three years, all of a sudden after every game i get the disc error message. It loads all the maps fine, but as soon as the game ends, it says "disc unreadable". All other games work fine.

The problem might be that his hard drive or disk tray has been damaged. Tell friend to contact Microsoft about this.It may have to be sent in.

Okay... I am now getting a little irked here. All other discs ( games and dvds ) run perfectly well in my 360. Halo 3 is the only one that has this disc read error message. Normally one restart and it's fine. I've removed and reseeded the disc and tried to start just a forge session about 4 times now and it won't let me even get into a map without getting the message. I've also noticed that Halo 3 is the only game that I have that will all of a sudden go into a high contrast mode then get that error. This usually occurs in the game lobby. All icons and gamertags will start to pixelate. The background image of the spartan and elite will appear to glow due to all colors changing to the bright end of the spectrum. It is currently at the point that I can't even get into a game of Halo 3 anymore.

I'll add to list of problems with the disk. My xbox started saying my disk was unreadable at the initial screen. It is when it is suppose to load the bungie logo. I tried three disk. So I took my hard drive and placed it on another xbox, it worked fine and loaded all halo levels. I then took my brothers hard drive and place it on my xbox. Still froze on the same screen. I played downloaded games from my harddrive, and all worked fine. [b]Conclusion: Not my Harddrive[/b] [b]Disk-Eye[/b] I played all of my other games and each worked perferctly fine. [b]Conclusion: Not the eye[/b] [b]Cache[/b] I cleared my cache and attempted to load the game. The game loaded fine. I chose not to install the update and try the game. It still functioned fine. After I choose to install the update, it began freezing again. I thought it might be some kind of memory issue, so I choose to reformat my harddrive and lose all of my data. I reinstalled the dlc maps and tried the game. The game seemed to work until I installed the update again. [b]Conclusion: Problem for me seems to be related to the update; however, I have played halo since it came out. I have played with the most recent update for months now, but suddenly seems to be affecting my xbox.[/b] My xbox also recently began freezing on different screens. It didn't have a set pattern, but seemed to freeze often on start up (of the xbox). It would also randomly freeze during other games. (my power supply was well ventilated and did not overheat) I decided to call live support. They could not figure out what the problem was. They told me that this was strange, and that I had troubleshot the cause in every way. They informed me to try not being connected to xbox live, but with the update installed it still got unreadable disk. They informed me that they would not fix my xbox since it was only occurring for halo 3. I really only play halo, so I informed them of the freezing in other games. They said I could send it in and it would be repaired. I thought I would comment so that maybe everyone could run through those steps. If you call live support and tell them you have done all these steps they will not ask you to run through anymore troubleshooting. Hope this gives a quick overview of the problem.
