HDTV Splitscreen problem! 4:3 Aspect ratio??!?!?!

As some of you know, I recieved my Halo 3 copy today from the Pontiac contest. I have been playing campaign fine by myself for about an hour. My brother just got here and we went in to do some splitscreen co-op campaign, and bam... Theres black bars on the left and right side of the screen! I tried going through every setting, reading the manual, checked my Xbox360 settings but it wont change! Any suggestions (or anyone else with their copy confirm this issue?) Thanks.

 •
Posted by: jordan15b this thread is still here? the ratio is like that for a reason
Sometimes I wonder if people even read before they post? Other threads keep popping up around this one with the SAME QUESTION and COMPLAINT WE ALL KNOW this is their reason - and understand why. MOST PEOPLE don't like it seems. Deal with it. Also take into account the huge amount of people who'll never post to this board..................................

 • It's just a choice man. It doesn't matter to a lot of us that it won't be proportionate. By your reasoning, everyone should eat healthy and drive hybrids because it's "right".

 •
Posted by: Protonus
Posted by: Dagie And not having an option to increase the FoV to fill the screen when playing 2player coop offline is sort of taking a little of the fun away, because now you: A) Have to sit closer to your TV or B) Buy a bigger TV, as you have said so many many times that it's starting to get on my last nerves.
No, it isn't taking away from gameplay. Again, and hopefull for the last -blam!- time: FILLING THE SCREEN ISN'T MAKING THINGS "BIGGER" OR EASIER TO PLAY. You're still limited by the VERTICAL resolution. Things are NOT going to be any BIGGER vertically, so fillling the horizontal does NOTHING to make the game easier to play on a small TV, it simply gives you an unfair advantage and DIFFERENT gameplay then intended. THE ONLY WAY TO MAKE IT BIGGER IS TO BUY A BIGGER TV. Or tell your leeching buddy to buy his own -blam!- xbox and TV! I hope your sick of me saying it so you stop posting your crap!
And again you don't get what this thread is all about. Wich seems kind of odd when there is so many posts saying the exact same thing. We do not care about if it gets easier to play with increased FoV or wierd if stretched. We want to fill our current TV's with the game images. We would like the OPTION to get either a vertical split instead (wich will severly diminish the FoV, but will fill out the screen), OR keeping the horisontal split and indreasing the FoV.
Posted by: Protonus
Posted by: Dagie It's not a dumb thing. These black bars will cause a burn in on your screen if you play with split screen mode.
Prove it. I guarantee it won't. No one plays halo that much on splitscreen that with a modern TV you'd get burn, ESPECIALLY from a dark image. This is a false concern. Stop getting people worried about it.

Posted by: Krono89 I see tons of people -blam!-ing about the split screen preserving the AR, blah blah blah. But after the last 10 hours of split screen online play I now have two nice bright lines running down the sides of my TV. Thank you bungie for damaging my TV, I couldn't have done it better myself.
There you go. And might I add a suggestion. Start reading other people posts and get it through your head that the majority of people would like the OPTION to fill their screen, one way or another without resorting to the half assed view in 480p.

You should consider turning off your TV for a few hours a year.
Read my above post jerk off, shut your -blam!- pie hole for a goddamned minute and think that some people don't buy new TVs until their old one dies. ONOES my 4 year old rear projection TV that can output 720p is now -blam!- up from playing Halo 3 in its -blam!- up splitscreen, It wouldn't be that goddamned hard for bungie to toss in a border that doesn't cause burn in. You obvously don't know a goddamned thing about TVs so shut the -blam!- up.

 • And every other co-op game in the history of mankind was wrong too huh? sorry try again The same way you think OUR opinion doesn't matter, maybe YOURS doesn't? As I said in previous posts, this issue is not ONLY Halo 3, any person who has a HD cable box has to make a decision for non-HD channels, do you leave it with black bars on the sides or do you stretch it? There are arguments for each. But viewer PREFERENCE prevails! The cable company or Network doesn't lock our box and not let the image stretch does it? Unfortunately, Halo 3 has taken away the OPTION to stretch it. WE ALL KNOW IT WILL LOOKED STRETCHED!!! WE'LL DEAL WITH IT!!! Cause people would rather not have empty space it seems. -blam!-!

 • A vertical split is no better. It is worse in fact. Choosing a vertical split will lower your FOV. They have to do this to keep everything in proportion. Lowering your FOV will make you see less and will probably make you worse at the game. Why you would want that, I have no clue.

 • That is pretty lame i no longer want to play campaign on local co-op, which is sad because i used to love it. 42 inch samsung hdtv, why not just leave the option like in halo 2?

 • All we want is an OPTION for a vertical split.

 • Seabiscuit posted on the first page: "Guys IT IS STILL 16:9!!! Please try and look at the screen. If you shrink down the image to half the size (there is another person playing on top of you that is taking up the other half the screen)....and you went all the way to the edges of your TV...simple math tells you your aspect ratio is now 16:4.5. This is not a normal or supported or even wanted resolution. In order to fix it, it needs to reduce the size of the horizontal to give you the 16:9 again. They didn't screw up and you shouldn't be pissed off. You have a 16:9 inch widescreen tv and they are giving you two players in that aspect ratio. There is nothing wrong with the game or your TV. Do some math, use some common sense." This thread should have stopped there, and frankly, thats where i stopped reading. He is absolutely correct, as is Protunus ^ right there. If the black bars were deleted, then you would either get: A: A FOV (field of view for you noobs) that is way to large, and in fact, might make people motion sick. If you don't believe me, Google search FOV motion sickness or something like that. or B: A super stretched image. This would just look stupid, I can't believe some people can't grasp this concept Anyone in the arts (fine art, photo, film) can tell you why certain aspect ratios are better than others. Most will argue to you that 4:3 is in fact better. Bungie was right in doing this. Even if they made it vertical split like Halo 2, it would still suck. Playing with that low of a FOV just plain sucked. THIS THREAD IS OVER, LOCK 'EM UP MODS! EDIT: Gears of war was able to do split screen like that because... DING DING DING: IT WAS THIRD PERSON!!! Stop comparing because the views are not the same and therefore, it will be done differently. [Edited on 09.27.2007 2:14 PM PDT]

 • Unless you have an obnoxiously small television, it shouldn't be THAT much of a problem! I played it with my friend last night (split screen co op), and I did notice that the bars were there. I didn't mind that much, and after about thirty seconds I totally forgot they were there, and never took notice of them again. Why? Because the game looks so good the way Bungie has set it up. However, I know that there are people out there that just simply *cannot* have this. If thats the case, then just don't use split screen! Sorry, but thats the way it is.

 • Add me to the list of annoyed consumers. Gears did it right, Halo 3 did it wrong. It should be fixed, this isn't something that I would have ever expected being a next gen game. Most games make use of the WHOLE SCREEN these days.

If she's anything like mine she starting saying how you were overreacting at some insignificant (I think all men are good at this and women just like to point it out). To say this was insignificant is not right though.
Oh, I know what you mean, I'm just saying that my wife likes to point those things out. Those things that may really bug me and she'll blow them off as insignificant. And the thing about this situation being or not being insignificant is really subjective. It doesn't bother me as much it bothers others a lot.

To say this was insignificant is not right though. I own a 50" Sony HDTV and to try and play this game co op in this way is just a gross injustice to us consumers. Like others have pointed out, it is all about options. If we want the game to play and look a little different in order to satisfy the customer, we should be able to. This needs to be fixed and if Bungie doesn't address this issue I think it says a lot of what they think of there fan base.

 • I agree with WeenisinLovewithPeenisuss: This should be an option for each user. Bungie, I hope you address this issue sooner rather than later. Microsoft is going to bank an estimated $600M off this game, the least they and Bungie can do is give the user what they want. Besides that, great game.
