Most of the surviving officers were aboard, but two had run for the forest. It was these two that Orapa now focused on... Figuratively speaking of course. All he could actually 'watch' were the officers’ biomonitors. As if on cue, his longtime companion’s biomonitor went into alarm mode. The sensors in the Sacred Armor detecting what would almost certainly be a fatal wound. Orapa watched as it slowly dwindled, his lifesign fading slowly until it was no more. Ca'anIch was dead. Orapa continued watching his field general’s biomonitor... Other than a quick peak when Ca'anIch's biorhythms started failing, KhePal seemed stable. Alone with that demon. He didn't have a prayer. Orapa's thoughts were as true as if the God's Themselves had willed it, and twenty minutes after the felling of Ca'anIch, KhePal's Biorhythm simply stopped. Not even enough time for an alarm. Orapa turned off his own tagging equipment, and went to his quarters, tired and beaten from the day's events. After this last battle, Orapa truly respected the Humans, though he would never admit it. Well, it wouldn't be much longer anyway. The war had to be near complete. They had even captured the human’s leader, and were going to soon find the location of the final contamination. Orapa was sure he had plenty to be happy about. And time to rest. He assigned a guard to his room. "No one is to disturb me," Orapa declared, "If anyone DOES wish to speak with me, you have my permission to do whatever you have to do make them think better about it." Orapa fell into his bunk and slept for the better part of the day. _______ Orapa woke to klaxons blaring and a splitting headache. He shook his head to clear it, then stood up and threw on his breastplate. It was about this time that the one called Zynnosh opened the door to his quarters. "Where is my guard, and what are you doing here?" Zynnosh dropped the parcel he was holding with a squishy plop. “Your guard…” “I simply must find better help…” “You fool – the Infidels are aboard with their Demon! Rally your troops!!” “My troops have mostly been decimated upon the ground sir – the ones that are left… Well, I’m sure they’ve heard the alarm.” “Orapa – If you weren’t already proven – I would kill you now…” “If you could – sure….” Zynnosh turned colors with the rage pouring through his body. To have been taunted in such a way - by this pitiful creature. He had proven his worth – but it was still aggravating in the extreme. Still, deep down he knew that the grunt could actually best him in a one on one battle. Orapa silently moved down the corridor, following the sound of battle. His few remaining troops here he had dispatched to the humans cruiser. If he didn’t miss his bet – the humans wouldn’t be here long anyway – They were after the one called Keyes. Keyes was a threat. He was one of the few humans that were. It had taken trickery to get him, on the part of some cowardly, traitorous human. The Covenant were not in the habit of taking prisoners – but the Captain of this “Pillar of Autumn” had proven his battle worth, and was worth examining. The Demon would be after Keyes – the humans’ odd military caste didn’t necessarily reward battle prowess with rank – The Demon should be commander of that group. Keyes was a brilliant tactician and captain however. Maybe the human way of promotion worked after all. He made his way to the brig. Orapa waited, silently staring at the cells below. Standing on a ledge with a personal stealth generator, he would be completely invisible to the humans. There were a few elites on the floor – also in camouflage. They would be hard to see for the humans – but not impossible. The eyes can pick up the slightly bent surroundings that the generator couldn’t clean up. The door slid open and the demon quietly walked in with a few of the lesser humans in tow. As if he has some kind of awful instinct – he opened fire on the hidden elites below. Orapa stayed motionless and watched the battle rise to a fevered pitch. The humans were having difficulty hitting what they couldn’t see. Orapa tossed a grenade into the fray. Soon all the elites were dead – as well as three of the humans. The Demon was not one of the casualties, so Orapa didn’t move – He could have put a quick end to all five humans by himself, but the Demon and even two humans would almost certainly destroy him. To hell with an elite’s overblown sense of honor, he had no shame in being alive. The Demon released the locks on the cages – and the one called Keyes took command. Orapa still found this odd – the Demon could crush the captain, yet he took orders from him. He didn’t know if it was out of an odd respect or a fear. If it was a fear – then the Covenant may have missed something obvious. In order to instill fear in him, the Captain would have to have some way of causing great harm to the Demon, maybe- Orapa quickly reminded himself that the humans did not follow the same social codes as the Covenant races. He waited until the humans had left the brig, and then ran out towards the Main Hangar. The hangar took up 3 levels of the ship – and could hold 2 dropships, 8 Seraphs and about 15 Banshees. Currently there was a mass of crates on the lowest level, due to a retrofit for the new Phantom class dropships. The Truth and Reconciliation was probably the last Covenant Cruiser with these old style ships – and using them on Halo had mixed results. The humans were often killing troops before they ever got off the dropship, due mainly to the poor design of the pods. Orapa was one of the progenitors of the new class of ship being adapted. The Phantoms were in possession for a long time – but were going to be used for personal transports for dignitaries. After Orapa had seized one of the humans sniper weapons – he set up a demonstration for the Prophet of Regret, and with two shots of the humans weapon he had killed everyone in a test dropship except the pilot – who was the only one decently shielded. The approval for using the Phantoms came about immediately, not because of care for the troops, but it’s hard to win a war with no soldiery. He was vaguely certain that the previous dropships had been for worker transport anyway – they had no armament – the shade that each of these sported were added later. The Demon came through the opening below, and Orapa put his plan into action. He thumbed the communicator on his helmet to signal the hunters through. Orapa soon found out that there indeed was a reason that the one called Keyes was the commanding officer. The hunters never got off a shot.
