The process is a costly one.[/quote] From what I've read, the main reason fusion is expensive is because of the amount of energy required to maintain the required level of magnetic strength inside a tokamak to force the atoms close enough with enough energy to obtain fusion. Over the years the energy output of experimental fusion reactors has increased, but has not yet passed this limit. Once this does happen however, we will have reactors that can power themselves, and the cost caused by the use of an external source of power will bhe greatly reduced. Then we'll have a cheap and environmentally friendly source of energy for everybody....woo!
