New Members And "Lurking"

With the increasing number of new members to the forums these days with the release of Halo 2 growing ever so closer, a lot of people are posting their first post without knowing anything about the forums they are posting in. This is a good time for people with some experience with the forums to step up and give new people a hand. I know that it can get quite annoying when you see the tenth new person of the day posting a post in the wrong forums, or asking a question that has been asked a dozen times before, but making them feel welcome is going to help us a lot more than flaming them. Not that I've really seen many people running around screaming bloody murder at every new member on the boards and calling them all n00bs, and excuse my French, but helping all of the new members out will make everyone a lot happier. Hopefully after the launch of Halo 2 we will see the amount of locked threads go down (wouldn't that be nice). On another note, I wanted to thank the members that have been posting helpful advice already for the newer members. It's making everyones time in the forums a lot better. For new members - Now, if you are new to forums altogether look around a bit before you post. This term is called “lurking” and it helps you get a feel for the forums you will be posting in. I personally spent over a month just reading around the Bungie.net forums, not posting at all, just getting to know the people and how the place was run. If your so eager to post that you just can't wait, here you can find a basic outline of what posts go where. Posting in the right forums will save you, and the moderators, a lot of hassle. Just use common sense when posting. Try to correct all typos that you catch and use proper grammar, and show respect to others posting ^^. These and other rules can also be found in the link above, click that for more details. Anyways I just wanted to post this to help everyone deal with the rush of new posters that we've had, and will probably continue to have, for the next couple months. Thanks for reading, I hope I've helped some.

 •
Posted by: Ocelot dude, how hard is it for ppl to post...
That's not the point. In fact, that's kind of the problem. You has some really good advice, Nosferatu. Advice that is unfortunately rather useless. The problem is that new members rarely read the guidelines and rules laid out for them from the outset, and I highly doubt they will be heading straight here to check out a "newbie guide." I doubt there's really much we can do other than ride it out and help out as much as we can. I can't hold it against you for trying though.

Anyway, I have to agree that new victims^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hmembers will rarely if ever read this. --Sgt. Smith wonders what the B.net population is at now.

For somone with a join date going back as far as yours does, you should definitely know better.

Plus he is not likely to come back and read the replies either. So anything that we say here is wasted breath. Personally, I would love to see the numbnut blacklisted and his group disbanded... but that's just me speaking in anger. Unfortunately it's the same thing (drive-by mass copy and paste postings) that pissed me (and others) off about some of the more "zealous" contributors to the Halo Movie thread.

 •
Posted by: un gato Wow, I've never seen you so angry Recon. Then again, I never did partake (partook?) in the Halo movie thread.
I never had a problem with the subject or the goal of the Movie Topic. It's when people resort to this nonsense, I really get upset. I mean, people complain about spam? That is real spam. Just like somone who mass-mails millions in the hope that 0.001% of the people will stupidly click. This moron uses what he thinks is a "clever" shotgun approach to serve his own ends. You know me, I don't call people names and the single and only time I've hit the "blam" filter was when I was using the NATO designation for the MIG-15 to refer to the actual NATO designation for the MIG-15. I try to add levity and humor into uncivil exchanges, but what really gets me about this guys is he is too LAZY to talk or work. Going into dozens of threads, and pressing CRTL-V before moving onto the next one is the absolute height of ignorance to me. Even people flaming each other tend to read what the other person is saying at them, even if it is to know it's now their turn to flame some more.

 • Considering that the new people are mostly around the age of 14, they could care less about rules and FAQS.

 • That's not exactly a fair statement -- I said something similar to that about 16 year olds a few months ago -- But here you are, proving that statement wrong.
Posted by: Josher 35 Considering that the new people are mostly around the age of 14, they could care less about rules and FAQS. • 15 year olds on these forums make me cry. They make me feel smart and intelligent which shows you what is wrong with the forums ;) Also I never read FAQ's or guidelines on any forums. I'm just not an idiot. It takes 2 seconds to see what belongs in what forum, and I know the basics. "Dont flame, dont spam" etc.

I took the time to look around before I first posted, I even used the search feature back when it was still around. [Edited on 10/9/2004 11:36:19 AM]

 • There is no way to stop ignorant posters. It's like telling a starfish to have a brain, or shooting a bird for eating. It's who some of these people are, they cannot change themselves, they're just plain lazy, they know it, and sadly, they don't give a rat's ass. We're on a very large forum, and out of those thousands of members, there are going to be some bad apples, there's nothing we can do about that. The thing is, most of the time the bad members post three or four times as much as a regular member, so it's as if the problem multiplies. You only need a couple of them to completely drag down the a forum. As I see it, there is no answer to the lazy/ignorant member problem. Nothing you do has any effect on them because they don't care about anyone but themselves. So, my advice to all of you is to learn to adapt to them, it doesn't really matter how you deal with them (as long as you don't drop down to their level), just find a way of doing so. If they won't change, maybe we are the ones that need to change.

 • Age isn't a determining factor with following rules and guidelines, it's more a part of their character and maturity. I myself am only 16, but I'd say I follow the rules more/better than about 80% of the people on here, and that isn't just because they're younger than me.... TRistan ;-)
