I do not take credit for any information in this guide I have just brought it together into one hopefully informative thread. I have linked content posted by other users throughout with their names mentioned for credit when required. ===Section 1: General Group Information=== In this section I’ll cover general group information such as recruiting, creating, maintaining and searching for a group if you don’t want to found one. Groups, a Brief Summary: Groups were originally brought in during the pre-2004 build of the Bungie website. The purpose was to allow Halo: Combat Evolved players to collaborate in order to find local players to participate in LAN (Local Area Network Events) due to the absence of Online play at the time for the Halo franchise. This purpose although still used by a few groups has been near forgotten, because of this many groups lack purpose and soon become in active (if they every reach a phase of activity in the first place). Founding a Group To found a group you need to have been a member of the site for at least 14 days, after this period if you visit this link (also accessible under the My Groups link at the top of the page) and follow the steps then a group can be created in a painless, simple, free process. See Section 2 for details on changing any of the details you created (other than the name which cannot be changed) under the title “Changing Group Information”. "Help my Groups on Probation and Might Get Deleted, What do I do?!" Groups when founded are given 60 days to reach a minimum activity level. For first time founders this may prove as a shock and concern them however 60 days is a long time and the minimum activity level is only 3 members so don't worry about it. If you've failed to gather 3 members after 2 months then your group obviously isn't attracting people so you should review your group's purpose. How can I make a Successful Group? One frequently asked question is “How can I make my group successful?” there are a variety of ways to do this such as providing interesting content, games, activities for members and an environment from which they are comfortable and want to return to. I would say the main thing that returns people to a chapter though is purpose. For a group to be successful over a long period of time it needs something to separate it from the crowd and it needs to be constantly updated and fresh. If your group fails to have a purpose then it will fail, if it doesn’t have one it will need one to succeed. However don’t see a large member base as success, it isn’t. Many groups with 1000+ members have dwindled to inactivity. You can try to recruit members via PM but most of the time they’ll join without contributing. It is better to make the group good and then gather members, but they’ll find you if your group has something to offer. “I Have something Great but I need to Recruit, what can I do?” Although as mentioned a large member base doesn’t mean success, sometimes small tight-knit groups are more enjoyable, there are some cases where members are needed to make things function. First you’ll need something to make them active of course but if that’s sussed then here are some recruitment techniques. 1. The Classifieds Forum: This forum is quite inactive and won’t gather a large amount of members but don’t see that as a complete disadvantage. Post a good, well laid out, informative Ad here say every few days and eventually somebody who is generally interested will see it, this type of person is much more likely to be active as they found the group for their own interests rather than hearing about it via word of mouth. 2. Private Messages: This is the best way to get lots of members quickly however it is also the most annoying method and will likely reduce the chances of seasoned members joining the group because, well, we hate group Ads but you never know until you ask, just make sure you don’t send more than one or the user may block PM communications with you. Best thing to do is create a polite message and paste in the users name, don’t make it too personal and keep it simple yet informative. 3. Private Groups Spotlight This method is out of your control but, everyday 10 (semi)active groups are selected at random. Some users do check this page, me included - although not particularly regularly. A bit of luck and a bit of activity may benefit your group here. 4. Help Improve the Group Search An unfortunately less well known method of group searching can be found within this thread by Bnet user Cryptic, I suggest group founders take a look at this thread, it may be beneficial if more group founders use the method, tell your friends and fellow founders! “Wait! I don’t Want to Found a Group, I want to Join One, Help!” Some users don’t want the hassle of maintaining a group and just want to join an enjoyable atmosphere and find a group they’ll benefit from. The current group search system is limited but it does exist. The group finder can be found here. Alternatively you could look under the groups of users in the public forums who you think you’d get on with and you may find a group that also matches your interests. Again, see this thread for a possible way of improving group search results.
