Home invasion leads to double shooting

Basically three men tried to break into a house and the homeowner shot two of them. Good for the homeowner.

They're just going to go to prison, get out, and do it again, wasting time, resources, and taxpayers' money. Prison just makes most criminals into better criminals. A very small minority actually turn their life around. The rest perpetuate the cycle and endanger the lives of citizens everytime they get out. Tell me, please, how is that reasoning sick?
