How did Johnson survive Halo:CE?

This is something that has bothered me for a while, so maybe someone more versed in Halo canon has the answer. At the end of Halo:CE, you destroy Installation 04 by overloading the reactors on the crashed Pillar of Autumn. After escaping on the fighter, Cortana does a scan and declares there are no human life signs remaining. Yet, somehow Johnson survives. How? If he was evacuated by Echo 419 at some point, to where?

Well you can forget about Halo 4 being the first game to require you to read a novel to understand an important plot point!
You dont need to ready anything, the game tells you that he got out somehow but it cannot being discussed at the moment. The game acknowledges that something happen and if you want to know more go read a book. That's totally different from Halo 4 just leaving stuff out completely and ignoring it. BTW, Johnson is hardly an important plot point.
Acknowledging that there is a problem doesn't fix it; obviously he got out, no one had to tell us this. You still have a problem. If anything, reason would dictate that that's even worse. You acknowledge a problem and don't even bother trying to fix it? That's laziness right there. And what, exactly, did 343i not even address? They addressed the Covenant problem in Halo 4, and gave more than enough hints and clues towards what was going on for someone to figure it out with some thought. All of the plot points brought up about the Didact that were necessary to the story were all explained, if not through the campaign, than the terminals. I just don't get what was so hard to figure out about it. Finally, Johnson is important, as he is the only living anchor to humanity for the Chief, and his best friend.
