Should "better" members be recognised?

By "better" I refer to members (or groups of members) who make contributions to the community. For instance, by the way they post, sharing their artwork, stories, organising game nights, etc... Why not have a way of identifying the role models in this community?

 • Custom Titles is all I can think of at the moment.

 • When I contribute to the forums, the feedback to my contribution is reward enough in and of itself. But that's just me.

 • I don't see why valuable members can't be reconginsed for what they do. I like how the Xbox.com forums have icons on a users profile. The same thing could be applied to Bungie.net and applied to the players title bar, e.g. Ambassador symbol for helpful members (obviously there would be Bungie themed ones and not ones borrowed from Xbox.com).

 • Isn't community service a reward in itself? Honestly, what do you have in mind? Did they not have community spotlights at one time? Did they not show off user created content within their game itself? Do they not have a title system that shows off adherence to community values? (somewhat...) Were you proposing a monetary reward of some sort, or an item that they can show off in real life?

 • Could be fun. But how would it go about being done? Points for good threads? A title other than member? e.g. Fabled Legendary Contributor? Maybe have a separate trust system for people who make threads with a large amount of replies? Then again that would make the site rather complicated and would encourage spam/provocation of other members.

 • I think that Bungie has done that already in the form of free codes, early access to Beta's, subtle shout outs. And this is just from my experience and or what I have see others receive.

 • as part of the community I wouldn't want to be the one asking for more, or saying they (Bungie) don't do enough... I think everything is amazing in the community, and can say they already do a pretty darn good job with recognition.

 • This could work. If implemented right, it could actually be pretty useful.

 • I love the idea, but my concern is what Antony is eluding to - its implementation. Leaders should be fair and impartial when recommending (or administering) both rewards and punishments. Would we have some kind of "ranking" or "thumbs up/down" bar for popularity? Would ninjas or possibly blues help moderate, nominate and/or administer said kudos or karma? It's certainly worth exploring. JTS

 • Who or what would determine who is "better" though, and how would you go about keeping it from simply becoming a popularity contest or blatant favoritism?

 • Maybe you could put a little star next to their name title? And when you hover your mouse over it the yellow-description-box would appear describing their feat? Edit: I know a lot of people dislike Waypoint, but they have a similar system, but they award medals which appear below the user's avatar. Awards include "Host with the Most", "E3 Top Contributor" etc. It would have to be awarded by mods, rather than an automated system though. It would be the "Recon" of B.net, but way less cool. •
Posted by: GrinnialVex Who or what would determine who is "better" though, and how would you go about keeping it from simply becoming a popularity contest or blatant favoritism?
Probably some kind of internal nomination/vote between the Community guys, Webteam, Ninjas, etc... What I'm imagining is a way to label a member's profile with something like a badge which others can view. These "badges" could have details of why a specific user has been recognised as an outstanding member. Other members will look to these people as potential role-models. The Icons section in the link Cryptic posted is basically what I'm talking about.

 • I believe that if you are a 'better' B.net forum member, you are already recognized. No extra bells or whistles are needed. They only seem to overly inflate the juvenile mindsets that seem to thrive on and lust after recognition.

I mean, most of them have to get there without being banned.
