Should "better" members be recognised?

By "better" I refer to members (or groups of members) who make contributions to the community. For instance, by the way they post, sharing their artwork, stories, organising game nights, etc... Why not have a way of identifying the role models in this community?

 • We really don't need this. Users who are well known for something must earn the privilege in each person's mind. This is just a way to assume that one person is "more right" than another. And people change. What if just getting this mark make that user act like an ass to people because they feel superior?

 •
Posted by: spawn031 The way the Xbox.com forums do this works. You find out who regularly posts in specific forums to help out users with the same problem. You can usually trust them with their answers and general knowledge about the website. I'd love to see something like this implemented. But as True Underdog said, I don't think this should add any privileges to a user. Merely just a visual "Hey, I know a bunch about X topic, take some advice from me." It keeps regular members engaged with newer members of the community who join up solely to post one question thread, while giving incentive for positive posting.
So basically, you want it the exact same as the Xbox.com Forums. People with certain icons don't have more privileges (unless they're a moderator). Like I suggested earlier in the thread, I think this system would be perfect for what Daza is suggesting. Only problem would be how you would measure a helpful/valuable member? I guess Ninjas would have the ability to give icons to people.

 •
Posted by: RigZ Boi Why do you want people to know you? Do you mean recognize you as a user? Either way, both desires, are in my opinion, a waste of effort and a waste of your time.
All I'm saying is: In the very few threads I will create, I just want people to look at the OP and say: "Oh, hey, it's that MightyMarcher guy." I don't want to be famous in these forums. I just want a little recognition on these forums.

 • I would believe the fame and recognition they would get from the community due to their contributions would be enough to distinguish themselves from everyone.

 • That is an interesting idea. One positive outcome is that rewarding users for positive behavior could cause more users to act positively. However, you would have to decide what these positive behaviors are, make the "badges" for them, and somehow quantify these positive behaviors so that a user can be graded on their behavior in the forums and awarded "badges" without bias. That would be somewhat of a problem. As for standing out, the current ranking system does that, somewhat. And if a person behaves in a positive way that benefits the community consistently, then that causes them to be recognized by the community itself. However, the same thing could be said about the trolls. If a person does thing that are against the rules or that otherwise hinder the community, they tend to be recognized as well. Spawn, Hylebos, Homeboyd, myself, and quite a few others were very resourceful during Reach's development cycle. It would have been helpful to many new users if there were a way for us to be known as informed posters. This way, they'd be able to contact us directly.

 • I actually really like your idea, Arbitor.
Posted by: ARBITOR 5 Heck I just thought of a great idea. In the United Kingdom we 'Knight' our distinguished members of the public. Bungie could do something on those lines. For example adding Sir infront of the Username. However, 'Sir' is british, and Bungie is american so, give it some bungie magic.. and Tah-Da! This way you don't get any more rights than other users, you still have your same title's and bar colours, you just have an extra 'end prefix'. Thoughts?
• "Achievement" Badges for users. All my lol. Bungie boy scouts, site achievements, gold stars.. come on. If that is motivation, you need to get off. Custom titles are the only ones I support, and they should be earned through doing something that is community related. [Edited on 09.12.2012 3:59 PM PDT]

It doesn't do a very good job at that though.
I think member tiles only show off activity and longevity of service.
Yeah but it's all we have to distinguish between different members. Mythics are the wise and old elitist bunch of people while everyone else sucks.
I don't think that's true. I just think Mythics have been around a lot longer than most members and they're recognized for that. That doesn't mean everyone else sucks.
It was a joke.

 • Achievment badges. Sounds pretty cool. Employee and Ninja given medals that can be displayed on your profile. Or different medals as avatars.

 • I'm unsure about the idea of this. It could encourage better behavior around the site, but it could also cause Elitism or anything of the sort. I guess I'm pretty consent with where we are at in terms of being recognized. But I'd rather have known someone from experience rather than a shiny title. Maybe a weekly member interview or something like that (IDK).
