The Flood 4: Parallel Worlds

The Insertion. The moon looked down on it all. A hazy, thick blanket tucked in close to the ground, as though it were a duvet warming up a child in winter months. From simply looking at the moon, and the sparkling mass of stars clustered above and beyond it, you wouldn’t know a war was on. Looking lower, and if you knew they were actually knew they were there in the first place, a trio of black, almost invisible planes glided seemingly without effort above the low level cloud layer. A larger transport plane, accompanied by a pair of smaller, sleeker escorts. On command, the two escort fighters peeled off from the transport, that was startlingly quiet for its size, and flared their afterburners. Specks of light amongst the dark they sped off east, towards a monumental battle in the skies, where jets screamed around at ridiculous speed, engaging one another in elegant rolls and dives, blasting away at one another in a deadly aerial combat. Quietly, the transport carried on without an escort, confident that the greatest in radar spoofing technology and stealth equipment would keep it hidden. But what really mattered was within the plane itself. Secured firmly by strong magnetic locks that were connected to a pair of rails stood a bipedal machine, fully the size of two men with one man standing on the first’s shoulders. It was expected to be the last fully operational unit of its kind in this entire region, or so intelligence said. Red markings that had once adorned it’s armour had been replaced with the occasional blue stripe, but little broke the jet black coating besides the single large, bright red eye and a pair of smaller ones to the left of it on the metal rectangle that assumed the place of a head. A handful of mechanics and technicians dashed around, running last minute checks on armour and weaponry, especially the most potent of all armaments. The weapon in question was literally the latest of all developments. “The most secret and devastating device in development for this decade” many heralded it. Mounted onto the right shoulder, it was tubular with a circular cooling device attached to the back of the weapon. A technician had affectionately painted on a snarling set of teeth around the muzzle, and no one had wanted them removed. The interior hold was illuminated by a pair of baleful red lights on either side of the mechanical masterpiece, two of the technicians secured their equipment in specially prepared places and ran to seats and strapped themselves down whilst the third jogged to the rear of the craft, where the bay door stood closed. The man secured himself with a short tether and grasped the lever controlling the door. He looked up to the bipedal machine, shook his head and pulled the lever. Suddenly, the interior was filled with noise and the temperature dropped like a stone as the whooshing, freezing exterior found a way into the craft. Fighting the biting cold wind, the mechanic hit a red button, and with a deafening clang the magnetic locks uncoupled and the machine raced along the rails and out of the hatch of the plane, falling away into the darkness. After a moment of free-fall the machine hit the cloud layer and carried on going, the thick layers of cloud parting like paper. It punched out the other side, and the pilot inside it immediately took stock of the locations below the vehicle. Breathing through a gas mask that fed him a constant supply of Combat Stimulants, the adrenaline inducing gases made his senses as sharp as that of any computer. The machine was heading towards the river bank opposite the ruins of Floodlin. From here, the man inside could see pinpricks of flame dotting the area, marking out where enemy artillery pieces had made their homes, but one stood out. A gargantuan column of flame made an impossible target to miss, and the machine rolled over to get a better angle of descent toward it. General Guscon was taking a tour of the front lines, accompanied by a handful of other Undergroundican leaders, and a force of bodyguards, he had come via a convoy of staff cars and Half-Track tanks to this, the greatest piece of military engineering he was likely to ever see, The Marathon. He emerged, clapping wholeheartedly from a improvised bunker after he had witnessed the firing of his most potent artillery piece. “Excellent work! Where was that shell aimed at?” He shouted, ears ringing from the blast. “A concentration of Floodian forces in the east of the city, General. It is bizarre, the enemy gathers in large numbers, but does not strike our forces trapped in the city.” Replied a young adjutant. It angered Guscon, but he nonverbally admitted the young soldier was right. The entire reason that he had come to the frontlines in the first place was because of the disastrous turn of events in the enemy city. In the space of a few hours, Undergroundican troops in the city had been surrounded, cut off from the river and home, and were now being herded into an ever shrinking perimeter. It was hoped that by his arriving, the troops would rally and gain much needed morale. Guscon had a sinking feeling that Floodland no longer cared about the collection of forces stuck in the city-a full two thirds of the units in the entire sector-but cared more about striking out across the river. “What is that?” Guscon asked, pointing out a slight patch of movement amongst the night. “It’s coming right for us. Quick! Get the convoy tanks! Hurry!” The adjutant shouted, panic in his voice. Shells and bombs were never that big, so something far worse must be en route, it would seem. The pilot had waited until the very last moment, with alarms bleeping and wailing all around. Relishing every moment of danger, he finally triggered the chemical boosters in the legs of the walking tank. With a slam far more powerful than any shell, the jets that folded out of the legs roared with the strain, nearly shearing off their positions with the energy of the halt. With his velocity slowed sufficiently, the pilot released the thrusters, and the now useless devices, along with the empty fuel tanks, sprang off the walker as explosive bolts attaching them detonated. The walker dropped to the muddy ground, sending clumps of semi-solid earth flying. The pilot had landed in one of The Marathon’s firing pits, huge holes in the ground, dug with three tunnels leading in different directions. One heading West with a large railway to accommodate The Marathon and a similar one heading East. Another subterranean tunnel came from the North with a dirt road constructed for ammunition transport. But it wasn’t ammunition vehicles heading towards him, it was a quartet of Half-Track tanks with Heavy Machineguns bolted onto their hulls. They didn’t get a chance to fire. The Mech hefted it’s arms, and the two chain guns on each arm began to take them down. Rapid pelts of bullets rained down on the slowly advancing tanks, and their paper thin armour was torn apart in seconds, each one detonating as bullets ground through them, setting off ammunition, petrol or both. With the immediate threat out of the way, the walking tank turned to find the real target. A truck filled with shells the size of houses next to the hulking Marathon, a pile of rail stock, there it was. The walker broke out into a run as it spotted around a dozen figures trying to sneak away, and they looked suspiciously like Undergroundican staff officers. One in particular looked like General Guscon. But a buzzing filled the area and suddenly, a Helicopter Gunship burst over a side of the firing pit, blasting immediately with everything it had. The Mech shrugged off the blaze of gunfire as though it were light rain, and brought the flying machine down in a return salvo. As the Helicopter fell, the Mech jumped up, landing before the fleeing party of Undergroundicans, and mowing them down, rendering the defenceless enemy into lumps of bloody meat and tatters of clothes. To finish the job, the pilot whipped the seemingly invulnerable walker around and charged up the wonder weapon. As if from nowhere, blue dots of light began to appear around the gun muzzle weapon. The Mech planted its feet firmly, and steadied itself as the blue dots were sucked into the gun itself. The temperature of the barrel soared, and the circular cooling device hissed superheated steam as it tried to keep up with the heat, if the weapon grew too hot, it would fuse and explode, not something that should be allowed to happen. With a blinding flash like a star exploding, the weapon discharged, and a crackling blue stream of energy scythed across the barrel of The Marathon, cutting it off entirely. The pilot changed the angle, and the beam vaporised a pack of terrified crewmen. The pilot turned the weapon slightly, and touched off a truckload of highly explosive shells. The entire area shook as though an Earthquake had arrived, and the shells exploded simultaneously, throwing lighter objects, humans and debris into the air. Feet planted firmly, the mech simply rode out the blast, and watched with satisfaction as The Marathon was lifted off it’s tracks for a moment and crashed on its side with a screech of torn metal. Behind his gas mask, Corbec smiled at the destruction. “Mission Accomplished.” [Edited on 10/14/2006]

 • You haven’t added anything to the story for awhile now. I hope that will change. You said that oblivion is taking you awhile to complete. Is that because you are doing lots of side quests or is the main quest real long.

I've finished Gears Of War, and I'm still nowhere near finishing Oblivion, that'll take months to finish off. And I haven't released anyhitng today because I've had mates over for a split-screen Slaughterfest. I hope to get something out before the end of today, because I go back to school tomorrow.

However I hope that the massive chapter I wrote would tide you over until I find the Will to tear myself away from, the wonderful 360. • (This is the other bit of The Break Out chapter shown above.) “Get in that one, go!” Corbec shouted, and the team ran over to a helicopter that looked as though it were designed to hold several people. It was painted jet black, and was equipped with a pair of rocket pods mounted onto the side and a .50 calibre machinegun bolted to the troop cabin , to provide cover for troops. The room itself was wide enough to fit three helicopters in, one next to each other, and still not have them colliding, and a large metal blast shield that could roll open to allow the Helicopters a way out. Corbec broke off from the group and dashed to a control panel on the wall. He punched in some commands, and the massive doors began to grind open. He turned and headed back to the helicopter, but stopped when he heard the slight whirring noise of Chainguns beginning to spin. Corbec turned, and saw two Stalkers emerging from behind cover, one of which had both arms in the Chaingun form, and the second as normal. The first immediately began firing, just as Corbec raised his shield. The salvo, while devastating, was inaccurate. It was in the very nature of Chainguns to fill the air with so many bullets that they were bound to hit something, and no amount of expert precision on the part of the Stalkers could make up for that. The helicopter fuselage was holed, dead bodies blown into meaty little chunks and concrete battered into dust. Corbec simply folded his arms and laughed, fully expecting the bullets to bounce harmlessly off his shield. As the six-barrelled Chainguns cycled around at high speed, automatically loading more ammunition to the barrel for firing, an electro-magnetic charge was applied to the ammunition before firing. The ammunition was fired, and the first bullet that hit Corbec was a shocker. The heavy metal slug slammed into the shield at supersonic speed, it crumpled on impact as the vicious forces of physics caught up with it, but the EMP charge was delivered on target. Corbec yelped, dropping to one knee as the shield flared and died on him. He rolled over behind an overturned Helicopter engine block. Corbec peeked over the top, and could see the right arm of the second Stalker change shape into a wide diameter, painful-looking weapon, most likely a rocket launcher. Despite the persistent hail of shells, he jumped up, knowing that no amount of engine blocks could stop a missile. The first Stalker stopped firing to allow the second the kill. Corbec knew that he had to stop these two here, or both he and everyone in the Helicopter would be dead in an instant. He also knew that without adequate cover, and no shield, he wouldn’t survive a rocket, unless… The large weapon fired, and amidst a rapidly expanding haze of exhaust, an anti-personnel rocket, packed full of incendiary explosives, screamed away to Corbec. If time were to be decelerated to several thousandths of its regular pace, an observer could see the rocket, with a red-painted front section and four stubby little fins at the back. The onlooker could see plumes of smoky vapour pouring from the back as it raced to its own fiery demise. The person in question would also see Corbec, with reflexes, muscles, and coordination enhanced beyond human capabilities by microscopic machines, instantly change his stance. He shifted his feet back a few centimetres, bent his knees, and put forward his hands, predicting the impact area of the rocket. The explosive careered towards the stationary Corbec, and he caught it in his waiting hands. The tip of the flying bomb, set to explode on contact, was nearly touching Corbec’s torso. Before the rocket ran out of fuel, he struggled to turn the violently shaking explosive around, and once it was facing the way it had come, he released it. In under three seconds, the rocket had been stopped, turned, and sent packing. The rocket smashed into the floor near its former users, and detonated in a breathtaking explosion of liquid flame. The Stalkers, half vaporised by the blast, went flying. Corbec immediately dashed back to the Helicopter and threw himself into the pilots’ seat. He belted himself in, and started to warm up the engines, no time for fuel checks, they had to leave now. He could only hope that the Stalker bastards hadn’t damaged the Helicopter too badly. “Everyone ready?! We’ll be taking off soon! Get yourselves strapped in and ready for a flight you‘ll never forget!” He glanced out through a side window to check if the Stalkers were back. He could barely see anything through the flames, let alone a Stalker. “Guys?” He asked, turning around to visually check on them. Sally was sitting next to him in the co pilot seat, looking at him with her mouth open in amazement. Everyone in the passenger compartment was looking at him in a similar fashion. “How the hell did you do that you lucky bastard!” Sally exclaimed, and the others similarly exploded with such comments and questions. “Look, I haven’t the time to explain, we need to leave now!” Corbec glanced again to check for Stalkers, and another three had marched into view, ignoring the scalding temperatures of the flames. “-blam!-!” Corbec spat, and turned the helicopter to face the machines, it had only just started to come off the ground. With the underside sending up sparks with every movement, Corbec fumbled with the controls, trying to remember from his tutorial on the Aquinas Router what fired the rocket pods. Meanwhile, the Stalkers were still advancing, some morphing their arms into Chainguns and Rocket Launchers. “Sally! Grab that joystick between your legs!” Corbec snapped, his eyes whipping from the machines ahead to the firing control stick between Sally’s thighs. “You what?” She asked incredulously. “The red button on top! Push it already you stupid woman!” He screamed. The Stalkers were raising their weapons for a finishing salvo. Sally grabbed hold of the stick and mashed the red firing stud on top, releasing a payload of high-explosive rockets at the Stalkers. They never stood a chance. “OK! Let’ go!” Corbec shouted, brought the helicopter to face the exit and coaxed every bit of speed from the engines. “Who were you calling a stupid woman you chauvinistic pig! And what did you mean by a flight you’ll never forget?” Sally asked as they left the Hive, understandably pissed. “Sorry about that dear, caught up in the moment, you understand. And by that last comment, I meant that every flak cannon and SAM site in the region will be aiming at us.” He replied. “Oh. I see.” Sally said, wishing she never asked.

 • The Break-Out. Lehto was back in the room with the wall-size screen. It was a place called the situation room, where the commanding Grizzled Ancients could observe and lead their fledgling Empire from afar. All information within their territory ran through here, making them effectively into Gods, omnipresent and all-knowing. A dozen Grizzled Ancients tapped away at keyboards, operating radio sets, making orders for troop movements and keeping the supply lines moving. Along the South coast of England, the attacking forces had landed, deploying entire armies onto the British beaches, readying to force out of the footholds they had achieved already. Hundreds of jet planes engaged one another in dogfights high over a large stretch of sea known as the English Channel, Battleships flung shells at one another and submarines fought deadly little duels below the surface. For now, the defending forces were holding their own. However, reports were coming in that Hives along the West Coast of America were under attack from long range Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles, launched all the way from Russia, China and Japan. The payloads mainly conventional warheads, but two nuclear warheads had targeted the main ports along the American Western Seaboard, effectively disabling the capability of the Navy to operate. Long-Range bombers had been picked up on radar, and the Chinese, Russian, Japanese and Australian Navies would certainly be moving in behind them. It wasn’t all a disaster though, when you had every man, woman and child in a country of 300 million people fighting for you, you could afford such comparatively small losses. But Lehto was somewhat more preoccupied with another matter. Somehow, the Floodians had survived the attack on the Aquinas Router, and it seemed that the puppet sin the sector governed by that Aquinas Router had turned on the Stalkers and puppets from other sectors within that Hive. “Lehto, should we smoke out the floor?” Wu #136 asked. He had just finished working on a Radio Set, and was ready to pass on Lehto’s order. “Yes, yes we should. I doubt that even Pyroshark can survive this.” Lehto was smiling to himself. He finally had Pyroshark and nothing was going to save him now. Lehto turned away, heading back to pass on he order. “And Wu?” Lehto asked. “Yes?” “Do we still have the cloning sample of Pyroshark’s Genetic Information?” “I should think so. We could run it through the cloning banks now if you want.” Wu said with a fair measure of dread, he’d been working all day, and the last thing he wanted to do was run down to med-bay when he was due to stop soon. “No, no. I just wanted to check. Carry on.” Nobody owned up to throwing the EMP grenade, though JS stayed at the back of the group and looked down the whole time. “Corbec? Weren’t you-” Pyroshark began. “In there? Yes.” He replied, pointing at the blasted Aquinas Router. “But there was an-” Sally started, then just hugged him in relief. “Explosion? Yeah, got a bit overzealous and used a frag grenade to finish a Stalker.” “How are you, you know…” Sol asked tentatively. “So amazing?” Corbec joked. “Well, there is that, but you know, still alive?” “Well, the grenade in the router didn’t hurt me ‘cos of the shield I had going. And my leg’s back in shape now because the Nano-Bots or Nanites, whatever you want to call them, healed me up. And of course the shield stopped the bullets short. Here, have a present.” Corbec gave Sol the bent remains of a bullet that had hit his shield. It was completely flat but for the end of the bullet. “But how are you like this?” Sally asked. “Well, I’m not too sure, but perhaps they filled the room with a power surge, which overloaded the Nanites already within me that made the Jack-in port. Now they’re giving me all these ‘powers’ if you will.” “Did you find out anything whilst you were in the system?” Mc Lees asked, trying to stay objective. “Like where the Grizzled Ancients are?” Pyroshark chipped in. “Yes, as a matter of fact. I know where the Grizzled Ancients are currently holed up. Also, I altered the commands for this sector’s garrison of humans, everyone in this sector, Stalkers excepted, are friendly to our cause.” “That’s a relief.” Sally said. “And finally, I came across some interesting information whilst I was in there, these people operate a policy that whenever they lose ground in a Hive, they fill it with Tabun or Sarin Nerve Gas to kill off infiltrators. We should get going.” Corbec explained. “That’s a pain.” Sally said. “Where do we go then?” Pyroshark asked, he looked worried. He’d been thrown from a speeding cars‘ bonnet, shot more times than necessary, beaten up, molested by a drunk queen, attacked, killed and subsequently resurrected, fallen on his rear end in some Irish Sewer and he certainly didn’t want to add Nerve Gassed to that list of physical and mental injuries. “There’s a blast door a little way ahead, they’ll pump Nerve gas through vents and after a while, send Stalkers through Blast Doors such as that one to finish the job.” Corbec said. “So Stalkers will be waiting on the other side for us.” Pyroshark asked, deep down knowing what the answer would be. “Yup. But relax, you’ve got me on your side, what’s the worst that could happen?” Corbec gave Pyroshark a pat on the shoulder. Pyroshark let out a long sigh. Chances were, he was going to be in terrible pain at the end of the day. The team had reloaded and regrouped, having run at full pelt after Corbec who ran unnaturally fast. Eventually, they reached the Blast Door, a big slab of metal that could retract into the ceiling if meant to be open, marked out with yellow-black chevrons along bottom. “OK, once we get through, follow me to a take-off area for Helicopters. I found out how to fly one on the system.” Corbec said. With that, he bent down and gouged his fingers into the metal of the door. Then, he gradually forced it up out of the magnetic locks holding it in place. Servos grinded and metal shrieked in protest. Snarling, Corbec pulled the Blast Door out of place and forced it into its holding place in the ceiling. On the other side, a trio of astonished Stalkers watched the spectacle with their blood red eyes locked onto Corbec. “Well, hi guys.” Corbec said, and the Stalkers went into the attack. The first made a stab for Corbec ‘s throat, which he sidestepped, then grabbed the Stalker by the skull and smashed it into the wall so hard the concrete splintered. He followed up with a burst of electrical energy, and the Stalker disintegrated. The second stabbed at Corbec’s torso with a saw blade hand, just as Corbec activated the shield. The saw glanced off the shield, and before it could be withdrawn, Corbec grabbed hold of the saw and filled the Stalker with enough energy to power a block of flats for a day. It too fell into dust. The third one leapt at Corbec in desperation, connecting with his boot in mid air as he swung it out for a kick. There was another flash of electricity and the Stalker had fully disintegrated by the time it hit the ground. “Come on, let’s keep moving.” Corbec said over his shoulder. The team dashed through battle-scarred corridors after Corbec in his journey for this Helicopter landing and takeoff area. As they went along, they passed the grisly remains of battles fought between humans converted to the Floodian cause and Stalkers. They saw eviscerated people of all sexes and ages, bullet-riddled corpses and blood sprays everywhere, signs of frenzied, painful deaths were all around. Occasionally they saw a Stalker so badly mauled that even it couldn’t operate any longer, but for every downed Stalker, at least fifteen humans had died. When they reached the Hangar, the running theme had not changed. There was a helicopter ablaze in one corner, resting on a pair of flattened and scorched Stalkers, cans of ammunition spilling their contents everywhere, bloodied corpses and severed body parts, bullet-holes on every wall. A vicious battle had taken place here, and moved on moments before they had arrived. However, two helicopters still remained intact. [Edited on 12/26/2006]

 • Best. Christmas. Present. Ever. Well, apart from an ostrich, preferably named Thunder, but we won't go into that. I like the way Corbec's become all uber now, and can now apparently manipulate the Nanites. Pretty schweet, although I was lookng forward to a Matrix-like confrontation between Corbec and the Grizzled Ancients inside the Aquinas Router. Hint hint...? Oh, and a late Merry Christmas to all those reading! -Pyroshark-
