O'Connor confirms that Halo series on PC isn't finished

The news is almost one-year-old, but I felt I had to share this with you. Go to 28:57 [Edited on 07.10.2012 3:40 AM PDT]

 •
Posted by: Jakthund I suspect Halo was never meant to be a PC series.
Eh, yes and no. It started as a Mac (which is really just a type of PC) game. Went from an RTS, to a third-person shooter, to a first-person shooter intended for release on Mac until Microsoft bought Bungie and made the game an Xbox title.

 • Halo: Combat Evolved Xbox release date: November 15, 2001 Halo: Combat Evolved PC release date: September 30, 2003 I suspect Halo was never meant to be a PC series. Back in the millennium beginnings the most powerful consoles were worse than the average PCs. That's why releasing a PC version was quite viable. In 2004, with the sequel, Microsoft gave it a try and failed. I don't see a PC Halo title in the foreseeable future.

 •
Posted by: Dark Hunter 2100 Though I still believe my main point still stands that Microsoft simply doesn't want the PC community, unfortunately.
They've tried many times to "take over PC gaming" but they continue to fail because they think they can get away with more than they really can. Games for Windows Live was the largest attempt thus far and you can easily see why they failed at it. It's not that they don't want the PC community; it's that the PC community doesn't want them.

 •
Posted by: Btcc22
Posted by: Dark Hunter 2100 x
1) They didn't pay for servers, the community did. As for the Gamespy master server, that likely costs next to nothing given how little it actually does. 2) They do however have to pay for servers to keep Xbox Live games afloat. 3) There was no Halo PC on release day either. It took around two years to arrive. 4) They've never announced a PC port before release. Why would they? Halo titles are always Xbox exclusive initially. Just because they haven't stated that there's going to be a port by this point doesn't mean there won't be. 5) Halo was already doing fine on the Xbox by the time Halo PC was released. You're likely correct in your conclusion but the argument used to get you there is mostly factually incorrect or illogical.
My memory and knowledge of Halo's true beginnings was bit... blurry, sorry. Thank you for correcting me. I was under the impression that Halo CE came out on the Xbox and PC at the same time, though I was aware of H2's port. Very aware. Though I still believe my main point still stands that Microsoft simply doesn't want the PC community, unfortunately.

 • Thank you, I don't know how I overlooked this. Maybe something will come around in the next trology. Halo needs supported modding and custimization that goes beyond forge for PC.

 •
Posted by: Dark Hunter 2100 x
Adding onto everything Bt said, you're confused as to why Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 were ported to the PC. Halo: Combat Evolved: After Microsoft had acquired Bungie and got them to work on Halo for the Xbox exclusively, Apple, Steve Jobs specifically, was upset because they had been showcasing Halo: Combat Evolved as a driving force for the future of Mac gaming. Microsoft ended up making a deal with them that they would release certain titles that were originally exclusive to the Xbox as PC/Mac ports. The main game being Halo: Combat Evolved. Halo 2: Microsoft was beginning to launch their campaign to "take over PC gaming" with Games for Windows Live. They were rounding up as many first party titles they could that made sense on the PC to launch it. It only made sense to use Halo seeing as though it was their most popular first party franchise on their console. They could have used Halo 3 but decided not to seeing as though they still wanted newer Halos to be exclusive to the 360. They figured Halo 2 was good enough and handed the work over to a sloppy one night stand type first party development team.

Halo: Combat Evolved wasn't ported because it lacked popularity from the beginning. Anyone who was old enough to truly remember will tell you it was doing very well before the PC port. Halo 2 wasn't ported because people were making a big fuss either. If that were true we would have gotten it much sooner than we did. Microsoft doesn't give two -blam!-s about how much we want something. They look at things like this with absolutely no emotion and strict business. [Edited on 07.19.2012 9:37 AM PDT]

 • Yeah, I don't think so. Think about it this way. Halo 1 was only on the PC because it was new and Bungie/Microsoft were trying to capture a good fanbase for the game. They had to pay for extra servers for CE on PC (though population had mostly countered loss of profit), Xbox was pure profit. Halo 2 comes along, except there was no PC version on release day. Microsoft gets a ton of revenue off of H2's popularity on Xbox Live, and Halo soars into the sky of popularity. The once sizable PC community obviously shows protest and anger. In hopes of feeding off this existing fanbase, they release a poorly made port of Halo 2 for PC, that ended up being a huge, utter failure and disappointment to fans. Halo's mainstream PC fanbase scatters, and with Xbox Live becoming very popular and having a huge game series under their nose, I believe M$ ditched the PC community. Permanently. They would announce if they had a PC version H4. And they don't. Sorry to say it, but the PC community was really just taken advantage of until Halo got off its feet, and Microsoft realized how inexpensive and simple simply selling it on their own console would be. And if your best counter is that O'Conner said something dodgy and misguided a YEAR ago, then you know that's wrong too.

While I think it might be likely, I'd rather sit here and default to "Microsoft hates us and will never throw us a bone. They haven't for what is almost 10 years now so I'm done with having hope."

 • I wouldn't get my hopes up considering they are well behind in the series with bringing PC ports. After H2V flopped it seems they kind of just dropped the PC platform.

 •
Posted by: Dr Syx First off, they were talking about modding in general. They weren't talking about PC gaming. You could say "Well modding isn't a console thing." but it could be if 343 could convince them somehow. Reach modding tool Liberty is a godsend to me. Now imagine being able to adjust the AI's intelligence. That'd be glorious!

It doesn't use Halo 4's engine. :P
I know this. I am saying that any new edition of Halo CE should come with Halo 4's engine.
A game is pretty much defined by the engine that it uses. An engine includes the graphics, the networking, the physics, the sound, input handing and so on. If you strip the engine out, you no longer have a game but rather a bunch of assets with no way to make any real use of them. It'd be more of a case of Halo 4 having a Halo CE mod than Halo CE having the Halo 4 engine. [Edited on 07.10.2012 8:09 PM PDT]

 • I did get that but I feel as though him saying that could be him simply mentioning how modding isn't really a console thing. That they're talking about the possibly opening things up for them. My point I'm trying to make is this in no way confirms there are new projects in development. That this is an example of people jumping to conclusions. In fact, this is more like leaping to conclusions. I do remember the Corrinne Yu thing. In fact, I was just talking to Bt about it on Steam. I even talked about it while that panel was being livestreamed. There's definitely a possibility there's something happening but this by far does not confirm anything. Anniversary? That would be a crappy as hell title, but it would still be epic if it happened. All the tools of the Halo 4 engine, net code that works, max players per server over 16 (32 ATLEAST), and easier to use (yet more complex) editing tools. • If you listen closely to his answer, you'll hear he's speaking specifically about the Halo PC community. Quote: "To be super honest to everyone in the audience, you know, Halo is primarily A CONSOLE GAME at this point in it's life span, and that's the definitely the direction that we are heading BUT we have had conversation internally about ways that we can open up existing products to the community and do more with that community." In other words referring to Halo games that are not on A CONSOLE. •
Posted by: NeverStop91 At least we can say that they are discussing about it. :sarcasm:
There was nothing there suggesting they're discussing bringing Halo games to the PC. He was suggesting that they were discussing ways they might be able to connect with the modding community. That could mean creating modding tools for a Halo game on the Xbox. • Wow... You're really jumping to conclusions, sir. I mean, really jumping to conclusions. First off, they were talking about modding in general. They weren't talking about PC gaming. You could say "Well modding isn't a console thing." but it could be if 343 could convince them somehow. He even said "... from the backend of Waypoint". Second, even if he was talking about bringing existing Halos to the PC, he said those talks were happening. Saying they're talking about it is no where near confirmation they're developing something. That would mean they're at least talking about the possibility.
