Was Marathon a big game for it's time?
I mean, I heard games like Doom, Quake and Unreal Tournament were huge, and I know Marathon was Bungie's first hit. But how many people played it, talked about it and recommended it to others? Was it big like the games listed above, or was it the underdog of it's time?

I've never heard of Marathon until I joined bnet.

It was a big fish in a small pond of Mac exclusive games (save for Durandal's PC release). If you were an avid Mac gamer you probably heard of it if not played it a lot.

I heard it had a sort of rivalry with Doom. Like Halo and CoD.

With respect to PC monsters like Doom and Quake, it was an underdog. Marathon is more akin to the likes of System Shock. It's always been more cult classic than blockbuster title. At least that is my impression. I was old enough to be aware of and playing PC games like Wolfenstein 3d, Doom, and Quake in the early to mid 1990s and I had never really even heard about Marathon until 2003 or 2004.

It was selling around 400,000 units per game for the Mac, so yeah. But not Halo big. [Edited on 04.19.2012 7:24 PM PDT]

Marathon was on the Mac side of the Mac-PC War, back when Mac wasn't as popular as it is now.
