After beating the original halo 1 i saw the cut scene with johnson and the elite hugging as the pillar of atum explodes but he comes back in the second halo why is that and how did he survive???

It wasn't apart of the Halo cannon I guess http://www.bungie.net/Forums/posts.aspx?postID=45397929 [Edited on 11.28.2011 1:37 PM PST]

The Halo 1 Legendary ending was not canon, it was just a little fun easter egg that Bungie just added in.
-
He didn't. The legendary ending was supposed to be fun, After they realized that Johnson became a huge fan favorite they needed to bring him back in H2 and beyond. They fabricated some cockamamie storyline about him jumping a pelican and somehow surviving the destruction of Halo. Bungie caved to their audience. I prefered a Johnson that would die every time you ran into him.

Time travel device secured by the Stealth Elite/Zealot for unknown reasons. In the original, the Elite entrusts Johnson with it, accepting his own death, full of regrets about serving the prophets. In the remake, Johnson steals it from his back pocket.

Cuz he's magical duh!

In the strictest sense, Johnson isn't a character in Halo 1. The name Johnson is effectively vestigial, being mentioned only in the credits (next to other named non-characters) and in the in-game files. In-game he's used as any other stock marine object, if notable at all only because he's used more often than the others. The in-game appearances that are "Johnson" in the Halo canon were all specified retroactively by later materials. In other words, Johnson doesn't really exist in Halo 1 as a particular character, let alone die. The legendary ending is nothing but an screwy easter egg anyway.

I think there's a book, First Strike maybe?
-
in halo2 in the training level, the marine asks johnson "how did you get out?" and johnson says "its classified" and the marine says "classified my ass!"

Maby hes like Chuck Norris or something, where he can live anything, so in Halo 4 be sure to see him again =D

cheif and cortana pickl him and another luitenant up cat remember which one but im sure thats correct

A thought on how this can be possible: The original Sgt.Johnson was such a great officer and trainer, they cloned him and from time to time the clones' neural info is uploaded to a datanet to keep the new clones up to speed... If they can make a comprehensive AI like Cortana with a personality, why not record the clone's personality and newly learned information and upload it through com channels to a central network - One clone dies on Tuesday, new one formed by Thursday, and the information on from the old clone is transferred to the new one and things don't miss a beat...
Absolutely brilliant! That means the Johnson that died in H3 will have a replacement. Yay!! But that doesn't explain his ability to get up after dying. Maybe they are mechanical and simply play dead? :P

no johnson is named so shut up

johnson has a virus from high radiation of plasma and he isnt infected by the flood on jenkind video file it shows him covered in flood but he killed him all hat the end the elites shield protected him because he had one of the most powerful shield in the covenant army and it actedlike a huge blast door for him and he was flown into space where warrent officer polloski is flying a pelican with lieutenet haversan and other men and he is picked up and he pelican is soon found by masterchief in his longsword fighter

The only way to kill the half Flood Elite is to assassinate him. Not even nukes can kill a half Flood Elite. How did Johnson know what the Stealth Elite was? Half Flood Elites make all sorts of noises that distinguish them from Elites. The "hug" was to get the Elite to lower his guard to jab a knife into his back. Then Johnson proned and used the dead body to protect him from the blast, the blast launching him into orbit. As for Johnson breathing in space, I'm just going to have to assume that it's his cap. After all: -Miranda Keyes was wearing a cap when I pushed her outside into space on Cairo Station -Johnson was wearing a cap when I pushed him outside into space on Cairo Station -pilots on The Covenant will survive a rocket to their helmet -Mario games So I have just answered everything (who actually likes the boring answer "it's not canon"?): how the Stealth Elite's shield was strong enough to withstand the explosion, how Johnson was shielded from the explosion, how Johnson escaped the explosion, and how Johnson survived in space. And no, I did not forget any details. Stealth Elites obviously had shield options, merely not choosing to use them.

While the Legendary ending is not really part of the Halo canon (and hence story), I feel the cinematic through Jenkins' eyes made it extremely confusing to provide a valid answer to the Sarge's survival, and his later appearance in the next instalments. The cinematic showed Sgt. Johnson surrounded by infection forms, with blood spilling across the grey flooring. Despite the novel Halo: First Strike's attempts to explain the phenomenon we visualise in the game, it still didn't seem like a plausible/logical explanation to his escape (although it has been a long time since I read the novel, so I guess I should give Eric Nyland some slack).
-
I believe that when he hugged the elite, the elite squeezed him so tight that he flew up in the air and into space and onto Ciaro station.

Chuck Norris Powers
-
They needed to bring him back so it was a mistake to let him die in 1 it's not A easter egg. In the last bungie ViDoc they even admitted it so yeah pretty much case closed.
Posted by: Zealot Tony The cinematic showed Sgt. Johnson surrounded by infection forms, with blood spilling across the grey flooring.
The Guilty Spark battle was excessively scripted so even if you managed to bypass Guilty Spark (invincibility + grenade + auto-turret + hammer), Johnson will still die. Which is why I do not ascribe to the conclusion that he died by the Monitor.
