ideas to improve the septagon?

i dunno about you but it seems to me a lot of people have ideas about the septagon (screw) and not all of them are good maybe we should have a rule against bad ideas?

 •
maybe we should have a rule against bad ideas?
Probably the most impractical idea in the history of forever. Also, ironically, if that rule was put in place your thread would get locked.

 • Even if that rule was implemented, "Ban Qbix" will still be a valid idea.

 • I thought the Septagon was what they called the private groups system... There's a good chance I'm mistaken, if anyone feels like clearing that up :V

 • We can't possibly understand the future of the Septagon until the new game is announced and we know the details of how Bnet will be integrated with the game. Things that would be nice: - 1. Less Community focus on improving the Community or site. Change is a lot smoother when it occurs naturally, or by the Web Team's hands. We can't necessarily influence these forums that much. It's happened in the past, with Coup and Greasemonkey, and Bathroom Readers, and the like, but it's rare that something finds its way to the surface and blossoms, and that's simply down to having an idea occur to someone naturally and them following through with it. It's not a forced thing, and you really can't begin to go about "improving" a community as large and vast as this without being on the Web Team. - 2. More focus on being a warm, cosy, loving Community We have the Carnages, now and then, on and off, and we used to have some form of Podcasts (lol don't look at me), and we did have a large focus on the Group Theme submissions or watching the Webcams together, but that whole feeling of being a close-knit community is largely gone. Most people are just sort of arguing about trivial -blam!- instead of being bros and really taking the full advantage of enjoying the Community for what it could be. To further the visions of becoming an actual Community, it would be great if DeeJ and urk could take it upon themselves in their busy schedule to be much more upfront and personal with us. Obviously not anytime soon since they're mundo darko, but when the time comes, YouTube videos of them actually answering questions would be a great change. As much as I personally love the ramblings of mad men to up the character limit (I'm guilty of this on my own game-dev site) I feel Bnet needs to reclaim so much more of the lost spirit that is the Community. Let us have something to focus on and enjoy together beyond text. Plus, it gives plenty amble opportunity for lulzy autotune remixes. Just something to consider. As a Community, we should be reporting inappropriate posts much more frequently than what we apparently do. It's not a big deal, I guess, but if you want to enjoy your time here, minus trolls and needlessly hateful individuals, then we really ought to look out for eachother and report when there's something amiss and against the rules. It's not really that hard to do. Just a couple clicks of the mouse. - 3. Stop thinking about "omg wut prawjects can i duu" and start thinking "What do I love to do that can be adapted and shifted for the betterment of the Community?" That's precisely where every awesome thing has emerged from on Bnet, and particularly in the Septagon. Greasemonkey scripts started because CAVX was pretty good at der codin' and wasn't happy with the member-titles, so made Coup to originally strip everyone of their ranks and keep it on an even playing field. Carnages were started a while back (I believe during Halo 2's era) by Cryptic and a couple others because, hey, custom games are awesome, and Cryptic enjoyed his organization and Community-events, so he went for it, and they're still going to this day. The Mod-Stalker was made by kd5shw originally to help the Community get in touch with the Mods quickly. jmh9072 and Firebird347 have been kindly updating and adapting to it for a long time now, and they do it because they enjoy doing it, for everyone. Bathroom Reader? Septagon Gazette? Community Podcast? Community Joes? All stemmed from the idea of presentation and internal affairs. Sort of a local news idea. Lots of people have contributed to that idea. Hell, even the Mods if you wanna go that far. They're in the position they're in because they've really enjoyed participating positively in the Community in a way that really made a positive and helpful impact, and now they have the ability to help keep the forums clean. What happens when a Mod stops enjoying his time on Bnet? He can resign (or go out in "style"). Quite simple. That's basically the stance I take on this sort of thing too. You want to improve the Community? Take that hobby or thing that you love and apply it in whatever way will get people involved. Quite simple. - 4. Less ass-kissing, plz. Being respectful of the Ninjas and the Employees is great. Fantastic, even. Good attitude to take. They're in the position they're in because they deserve it. But, dudes, come on. Wasting space in a thread just quoting something they've said and adding nothing more to the conversation other than "This!" or "Haha! Pwned" or "lolwat"....is just getting really old now. It can't be helped, but the more people that sort of realizes that they're doing that (often new members who get all exciters about shiny shiny) then the cleaner the forums can be. This also extends to being lazy about replying to normal members' ideas. I swear, if I see just a bunch of people quoting this huge post and going "omg bungie hire this man" I will be very disappoint, but also slightly egotisical. And we don't want that. - 5. Don't call it "The Screw". It was funny when it happened originally, I'll admit. I was laughing my ass off along with the rest of you. But I haven't laughed since. "The Screw" sounds like the name of a strip-club. Are we a strip-club? I see no wimmenz on poles. Well, not recently, anyway (how else did I get my title?). We're the Septagon, forming the entire circle of Bungie and its Community. We are specifically the 7th Column. The central pillar of awesome surrounded by the supporting arms and forces that make up Bungie. To call us the "Screw" would really just dampen that imagery. Wet photographs smell bad. Do we want to smell bad? I didn't think so. You'll never get your pole-dancers then! - 6. A few more tournaments and game-centric fun things couldn't hurt. It probably won't get a chance to go without plenty of pre-organization, but let's face it, the Carnages are generally limited to between 8-32 each week. There's definitely a lot more people who want to interact in these things on that one day of the week. Just look at the substitutes that get racked up. Not to mention the poor sods who wanted to, but are working that day. I say that either more Carnages or differently themed game events could not hurt the Community. As long as they are specifically scheduled and organized either by the Ninjas or by appointed-by-Ninjas teams of members. I'm sort of envisioning things like Race, Infection, [insert your favourite community-made gametype here], etc, etc. Possibilities for making this into an actual close-knit Community don't just end at "okay lets discuss the sites features lol omg they changed the font omgomgomgomg akronos ur so awsum, but lol its all stoshs fault the site wuz down TROLOLOLOL" - 7. Patience. Bungie's busy. Pay no attention to the legions of men and women behind the curtain. They're working their asses off daily to eventually present us with what everyone is awaiting with baited breath. The fanbase as well as the industry at large...they're practically the only company right now that's currently working on a brand new IP that could entirely revolutionize the way the industry works, just as Halo did before...that's a huge responsibility, and its reach stretches far beyond our comparitively minor wishes for Community well-being. We'll have our day. I can't wait.
Posted by: supertripon I thought the Septagon was what they called the private groups system... There's a good chance I'm mistaken, if anyone feels like clearing that up :V
That's the 7th Column. Which, if you think about it, refers to the big middle section in the Septagon. • This idea should be banned, because while some ideas people suggest may be absolutely terrible, there are times when they can lead to someone else thinking up a good idea. Also, what John said. <3

 • Well it would be cool if you got a dollar for every post you made, but that's not going to happen. Improvements come from threads like these though. Someone will come up with a great idea sooner or later. ~Delta

Seriously, I like the ideas you've suggested here, especially te third and fourth.
I do too, now that I've re-read them. Just a shame they won't really be pushed forward that much. This thread will drop off the face of the front page and all the suggestions in here (the good, the bad and the ugly) will be forgotten. Edit: tempted to make it its own thread now I think about it. But then again, it's already here, why would I make its own thread? [Edited on 11.20.2011 3:31 AM PST]
