Posted by: ApocalypeX Why does everything have to be about money? Knowing they are a successful mobile app producer. Or if they aren't/ [Edited on 09.07.2011 10:14 PM PDT]

If you were an indie gamer (or just really raw and new) and just wanted to get something out there, then you'd probably choose someone like Bungie who would bung it out on this platform for free and launch it for free. I think if any newbie comes up with a gem, then Bungie will offer them a job. To me, this is just a recruitment platform. And an honest one at that. It says, "Let's let talent come to us, we'll encourage it."

I don't believe the purpose of Aerospace was ever to make a ton of money from it. But just to allow small game developers to get their game out there.

They get 7 internets
Posted by: ApocalypeX Why does everything have to be about money? Bungie wants to help the underdogs create and publish great games without making the developers sell their souls.
Really, the "underdogs" create the game and invest their time and money into it. Bungie checks so it's good enough/appealing to the masses and if they think it is (and can make a profit) they'll help with ads and release, and take their fair share of the profits. Games that costs on certain platforms, in-game ads, subscriptions, extra chapters/DLC, there are many ways to earn money from "free" games. Even most major MMOs goes "free to play" and get 2-3x more money then they did from subscriptions ;) Running a company is all about finding new ways to make more money while decreasing the investment and the risks. Mobile gaming means small investments (no million dollar graphics) while big potential market. And as a publisher, even if a game fails you won't take much of the fall (compared to the developers). Great example, Rockstar paid Team Bondi to create a game, the game sold average but the dev-costs were high. (see rockstar and Team Bondi, or Activision and IW). Publisher = more money, lower risk. Developer = more freedom, huge risk and smaller profit.

They get to pretend they are just like their hero, Microsoft. They take a new relatively unknown game developer, promise the world, deliver little $$, and keep them making new maps and releases until the talented staff leave to find a life. Doubt hairbrained will take 7 years to catch on though.

Well, thanks for clearing that up guys.
Posted by: ApocalypeX Why does everything have to be about money?
Never said it was I asked what do they get out of it, this is not necessarily about money.

One billion dollars and infinite girlfriends.

Charged or not, I still want to play this game all of the way through!=)

Only Chapter 1 is free I think. Chapter 2 costs $2 or so. They will get some of the dough made from Ch. 2 and the other chapters and get recognition and publicity. It isn't gonna be a big source of money but it's something.

The Publishers help name the Prices, right?

It'll be amazing on their resume for World Domination.
Posted by: ApocalypeX Why does everything have to be about money? Bungie wants to help the underdogs create and publish great games without making the developers sell their souls.
I can't see Bungie making a lot of money from Aerospace. They will benefit from the publicity and the talent hiring potential, but Independent developers and consumers benefit far more. Aerospace allows Indie devs to break into the market, which is potentially very exciting for anyone into mobile gaming, as Indie devs are the leading innovators. So while there are some small benefits for Bungie you can almost look at them as consumers, giving some of their resources to ensure there are more games out there that they want to play.

Some of the ickle developers will one day blossom into full grown studio's making big cool stuff, and they will be super best friends with Bungie in the future because being a part of Aerospace helped them get there. And then they will scratch Bungies back.
