Halo PC FAQ (READ FIRST BEFORE POSTING QUESTIONS)

So, I've noticed that half of the threads on this board are things that have been asked a thousand times. So I'm making an up-to-date go-to thread. I know mods lurk around this board, so a sticky would be very helpful if it ever happens. If this gets stickied and I missed anything, lemme know and I'll add it. Does Halo PC work with Windows 7 32/64-bit? Yes. Halo PC should work perfectly for any version of Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit. Do people still play it online? Yes. Halo PC 1.09, as of June 2011, has 300 or more players online at any given time. I get an error when I try to patch Halo PC. It's says I need to be an Administrator to patch the game, but I am an Administrator. What do I do? Right-click the shortcut you use to run or patch the game and click "Run as Administrator". Can I use a controller with Halo PC? Can I use an Xbox 360 controller? Yes. However, Halo PC's control setup is entirely digital. As a result, analog sticks do not work as they did on the Xbox version. There is also no Xbox-like aim assist when using a controller. Where can I download Halo PC? Legally, nowhere. No digital distribution services offer Halo PC. Illegally, well, you're on your own. The game runs slow, but I run a recent nVidia card. Turn off Decals in the video options. The game doesn't display the camouflage effect correctly. Only certain video cards support that feature. If it's not working, yours isn't one of them. Try this fix from the Gearbox forum and see if it helps. (Thanks, Zetren) There are no colors on the armor of Spartans, grunts, elites, ect. You're using an integrated card that doesn't support color. There was a patch, but nobody knows where to find it anymore. Upgrade your video hardware. Where can I buy Halo Mac? Halo Mac is out of print. Copies on eBay usually run for about $100 dollars. I don't wanna pay that much for a 7-year-old game! Can I run the PC version? Yes. Dual-booting or Bootcamp should work. Our resident Mac expert has stated that it doesn't work in Crossover Games or Wine. If you can get it to work in either of the two, feel free to post. (Thanks, Dirk_Gently) How do I install maps for Halo Custom Edition? Unzip them and put the .map file in the maps folder of your Halo Custom Edition install path. This is usually C:/Program Files (x86)/Microsoft Games/Halo Custom Edition/Maps. Where do I enter my CD-Key for the Halo Reach nameplate? Go to your profile here on Bungie.net, click the "Game Settings" tab, and click "Nameplates". Can someone give me their code for the nameplate? No. As Tom T 117 said, asking for keys is not only extremely annoying, but banworthy. Can multiple people play online using the same CD key? No. What about LAN play? Same answer. No. Each player needs a different CD key. Why can't anyone join my game/server? That's most likely a port forwarding problem. Forward ports 80, 2302, and 2303 on your router for both TCP and UDP. If you don't know how to do that, Google it "port forwarding" and read up. I shoot people with the pistol/sniper rifle, but my opponents don't die! Hax? No, latency. Halo PC's netcode took a dive when MS mandated a rewrite of the netcode to support 56k connections. You have to aim in front of your targets based on your ping to the server. A ping of around 60 is usually a head's length or so. Work with it. It's called "finding your lead". You have to do this with ANYTHING that you want to hit your target; rockets, shotgun blasts, even melee attacks. I could swear this game looked better on the Xbox. What happened to the shiny assault rifles and flag poles? Gearbox messed some of the shaders up in the port. Thankfully, the community fixed that. You can find that fix here. (Thanks, Zetren) [Edited on 06.02.2011 9:01 PM PDT]

 • About the IGP Patch, it was really just a Intel driver update. Oh, and Paralells/VMWare will NOT run Halo PC. Wine will, but VMs won't. [Edited on 05.02.2011 8:45 AM PDT]
There is infact a fix for that problem, I havent tested it yet though http://gbxforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=60814 EDIT: Just tested it, works flawlessly! Way better than the transparent look it had before. I seriously recomend everyone to use this, works for halo PC, halo CE and even trial By the way, you do not need to apply this fix if you have an ATI graphics card, camo works normally on them. • Updated with the link to the camo fix. Thanks. Conker, I was thinking it'd be more appropriate for H2V to have another thread entirely. I'll do one in the same fashion as this one later tonight.

 • Hey DusK, here is the link to the shader restoration patch. Maybe you could put it up. http://www.modhalo.net/index.php?/topic/7593-shader-restoration-patch/ Here's the deal, when Gearbox were porting halo from xbox to the PC, some shaders didn't make it through. And Gearbox didn't patch them (or the bloody net code...) This unofficial patch fixes most of those shader bugs and makes Halo look cleaner, and makes it as original as possible

Here is a Halo CE version: http://hce.halomaps.org/index.cfm?fid=4974 Although no where near as good, this patch only addresses the assault rifle and nothing else. If anyone knows of a better version, or can tell me how to convert the PC version to CE, I'd be very grateful. [Edited on 05.08.2011 3:26 PM PDT]

 • Dusk, one minor correction to the list: Halo PC does not run in Crossover Games and I don't believe it runs in wine on Mac. Only real way to run Halo PC on a Mac is through bootcamp. Also the shader restoration pack that is posted above me also works on Halo for Mac. Also when I get more time again there will be a release of a shader fix for Halo for Mac for people running newer graphics cards.

 • Another thing to add: gearbox also messed up the bitmap for the loading screen on the halo ring, so if yours looks pixelated or wierd, the shader pack should fix that (or some bitmap floating around. I don't remember the url right now, but it's on the modhalo forums.) Also, for the server joining, as it should be obvious you can join down (lower updates) but not up. • Most sensible gamers won't worry about server versions. The client auto-updates, and if you're smart enough to run a dedi, you're smart enough to know to keep it up-to-date, unless you're intentionally running a specific version of the game. Anyway, bumpsicle. It'd be nice if mods could sticky these topics. Already had one guy miss the H2V FAQ and post a question that was already answered in it.

Most 1.00 and 1.04 PC EXEs don't require keys to join. You can host keyless servers, though, if you have a tool like Gandanur.

However, making an account on GameSpy doesn't work and I still can't play online!
You don't have to register with gamespy in order to play online. Just ignore the gamespy registration. As for not being able to play online: What exactly are you experiencing? Are you getting an error message? Are there no games showing up on the server list? Also have you updated the game with the latest update? v1.09 is the latest update.

 • Odd as this may seem, the board is actually not flooded with FAQ as it usually is ATM. Perhaps this thread is working? Also bump.
