•
Posted by: ApocalypeX Why does everything have to be about money? Bungie wants to help the underdogs create and publish great games without making the developers sell their souls.
Really, the "underdogs" create the game and invest their time and money into it. Bungie checks so it's good enough/appealing to the masses and if they think it is (and can make a profit) they'll help with ads and release, and take their fair share of the profits. Games that costs on certain platforms, in-game ads, subscriptions, extra chapters/DLC, there are many ways to earn money from "free" games. Even most major MMOs goes "free to play" and get 2-3x more money then they did from subscriptions ;) Running a company is all about finding new ways to make more money while decreasing the investment and the risks. Mobile gaming means small investments (no million dollar graphics) while big potential market. And as a publisher, even if a game fails you won't take much of the fall (compared to the developers). Great example, Rockstar paid Team Bondi to create a game, the game sold average but the dev-costs were high. (see rockstar and Team Bondi, or Activision and IW). Publisher = more money, lower risk. Developer = more freedom, huge risk and smaller profit.
