Today Microsoft announced that as of April 15th they discontinue Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games (i.e.Halo 2). This includes Xbox v1 games being played on an Xbox 360.

To everyone who has played, enjoyed and supported Halo 2 for it's 5+ years of dominance on Xbox LIVE, we thank you! It is of course sad for any of us to accept the end of an era but it's been a good ride.
That said, mark your calendars now - on April 14th we're going to hit Halo 2 en masse for one last HOORAH, old school style.
-
I am in. I will spread the word.
-
I'll be on. :( It'll be like attending a funeral.
-
This sucks. I only started playing Halo 2 online back in October. I will be playing it until the end though. I bet this something to do with the rumors of a bigger friends list that older xbox game can't support. As if anyone plays with 100 people on a regular basis.
Posted by: Im S0 L3G1t I played the game the day it came out; I will do the same as it ends.
i remember going up to EB games with my buddy and getting a picking a number to see what place we would have in the midnight release line. I was so happy i got number 8, went home and played for 2 hours and STILL went to school the next day. ah the good ole days

lol i still have halo 2 LAN parties. I actually planned to have one on saturday. Guess we have even more reason to play now.
-
It is reallly sad day indeed. But hey this would be a good opportunity to bring Halo 2 to the Xbox 360 for games on demand and update it like Vista and support of its achievements that was just vista exclusive.
-
R.I.P. Halo 2 online.
-
No more button glitches......yesssss.....

There is no logical reason to shut it down. It's just another crummy decision by Microsoft. They pulled the same crap with their Redmond based Halo PC "Bungie" servers a few years back and replaced them with H2v servers that nobody plays. People hate Microsoft because of silly decisions like these. All the money in the world and they can't let people continue playing H2 on Live... Good thing Halo PC uses Gamespy and is not controlled by Microsoft otherwise we'd have been shut down many years ago. Frankly it makes little sense that Halo PC (and the awful H2v) will continue on while H2 Xbox Live gets turned off. Way to support your customers and community Microsoft. And once again Bungie is shown to be a puppet. The entire Halo series would have been a lot better and Bungie a lot richer if they had not sold their souls to Microsoft some 10 years ago.
Posted by: CrazyNakedMan Sketch, Will the employees of Bungie consider releasing Halo 2 on the arcade? It's guaranteed to sell a lot, and the community could be saved. At least bring up the topic in the studio, a lot of us fans would really appreciate this.
Agreed.
-
I'll be there without a doubt. Thanks for the warning at least. Oh, and twelfth!

Awww...
Posted by: Sabe I like how Bungie is ignoring how stupid this is. Forgive me for not being 'oh lets get nostalgic!', I thought the fact thousands of people still playing this game, suddenly being told 'NOPE' to a service they've paid money for, might be the more pressing issue. Great stuff. EDIT: I realise it's not Bungie's error, but acting like nothing's wrong isn't much better.
All good things come to an end. It has been on the cards for a very long time and Microsoft are the keeper of the keys. I would rather the game was given a send off now while the Halo franchise is still hugely popular than ten years from now when the community that knew and loved the game had moved on. I just hope bungie make a big deal out of this, as a community we should give the game the attention it deserves!

Although I realise the decision isn't in Bungies hands. My main problem is with regards to maps. I've loved the likes of Headlong, Coagulation, Waterworks, and Terminal over the past couple of years but Halo 2 is the only game I can play them on. Bungie obviously aren't going to remake these for Halo 3, but then we don't know what's in store for Reach. Fingers crossed, eh? Although out of curiosity, will the Halo 2 game stats remain on Bungie.net after Halo 2 is shut down?

It has been a great ride. It's completely surreal to see the experience come to an end. That said, I'll see you all now through April 14th on the battlefield. Calendar marked. [Edited on 07.26.2010 4:56 AM PDT]

Well... all we have left now is Halo 2 For Vista.

I will be there.

There are those who said this day would never come. What are they to say now?
-
I think it sucks that they are shutting it down, but at least it was fun while it lasted. Now I have something to look forward to in a couple months, a day where it won't be any problem finding matches in Halo 2. If you go to Majornelson.com there is a timer on the left side of the screen that tells you when its gonna happen. Its on the left side under user functions.
