My Tips To Reach Onyx! (Episode 2 video out now!)
SAVE THIS THREAD AS IT IS CONSTANTLY UPDATED! Check back often!
Hello, and welcome to "My Tips To Reach Onyx!" Some of you may remember me from my very successful top thread, My Tips To Reach 50!. Since that thread/video series had such a large following, I decided to bring it over to the next chapter in Halo. Thus, I bring you my next series, My Tips to Reach Onyx! What is this thread for? Well, following in the footsteps of my previous thread, this is about sharing tips and tricks that I and the community find to help you improve your gaming. Do I guarantee you Onyx? No, but it's a catchy name. Why should you listen to a loser like me? Well, for Season 4 and 5, I placed as Top 1% of Onyx. On top of that, HaloCharts had me listed as #7 in the world for Team Doubles for Season 4, and #9 for Season 5. I've participated in MLG competitions (Meadowlands and Collumbus 09, not saying that MLG is the absolute definition of competitive gaming). I play against some well-known pros every so often (I have a couple videos in my fileshare of my teammate and I playing against Neighbor and Heinz of Triggers Down and winning) I am a Mythic Conquerer of Halo 3 and 1 mission away from Reach (Solo Legendary All Skulls On), as well as a few other things I don't wish to toot my horn about, this was just for validation. So let's get started: Videos My Tips To Reach Onyx! Episode 2 - I talk about secret spots to get the drop on your opponent. My Tips To Reach Onyx! Episode 1 - Welcome To Reach! - This episode is from the beta, but still includes some good tips with armor abilities. TIPS

Weapons: First, let's talk about Power Weapons. This is mainly aimed at Shotgun, Grenade Launcher, Rockets, and Sniper Rifle. The main way of controlling these weapons is memorizing their spawns. How should you do that? Know how to control spawn times. Sniper, Grenade Launcher, and Shotgun each have a spawn timer of 2 minutes, while Rockets has a timer of 3 minutes (normally). This timer starts from the moment you PICK UP the weapon. This means, if you pick a Sniper up at 6:30, a new one will be due to be up at 4:30. Now, this is where we get into controlling the spawn. Most maps have a "Item On Map" limit. This means, that as long as someone is holding the Rockets, they will not respawn until it is dropped. Use this to your advantage! Say you're out of Rockets, and the timer has gone past it's limit. Your opponents may not know you still have them, and may be rushing in for the new Rockets (the rocket spawn on Reflection is a very exceptional grenade trap). You can use this to trap them. Also, if you are holding onto the empty rockets, try standing over a new weapon, and wait for your teammate to get to the new rocket spawn, if the area is clear, swap out your rocket for any new weapon, and the new rockets will spawn immediately for your teammate. You now control power weapons. When it comes to DMR, a very constant complaint is how to control bloom. What I've found to be a very useful training tool is to boot up Halo 3. Play a game of Magnums in Halo 3. The pistol in H3 is a 5-shot kill, like it's Halo Reach predecessor(?) and the DMR. However, the pistol in H3 has a limit on how fast it can shoot. Coincidentally, that is about the speed you should be shooting your DMR for effective bloom management. Besides that, load up a game with a second controller, and practice shooting at different ranges. Find what speed works best for which distance. Another thing to note is that CROUCHING reduces your bloom. A trick I like to pull on people, is that if I know that I am about to get into a DMR fight, I try to turn a corner, walk out, or whatever I am doing, while crouched, and get my first shot off crouched before I stand up and strafe. This allows me to get one shot up, and the first shot while crouched pretty much reduces your bloom to the neutral level, allowing me to have a much more precise bloom. DMR or Needle rifle? This is a constant question. The answer? Either, as long as your whole team decides the same way. DMR takes 4 shots to take down shield, and either 3 body shots, or one headshot, in exchange the bloom enhances slightly faster than the Needle Rifle. It also has a deeper scope. The NR takes 5 shots to take down the sheld, and either 3 body shots for a supercombine kill, or 1 headshot. Although it takes more shots, it's bloom is smaller, allowing for faster shooting. Here is where things get tricky- The two DO NOT MIX WELL! With a DMR, body shots take away health. NR needles DO NOT TAKE HEALTH AWAY. This means, if you are playing doubles, and you take down someone's shield with DMR, and get 2 body shots on him, your NR teammate will still have to land 3 shots on him. Likewise, if you NR someone and get 2 needles in his back, your DMR teammate will have to still shoot him 3 times. Make sure you work together and make this decision together, or else you're extremely hurting your team-shot capabilities. Team Slayer: First and foremost, the golden rule of Team Slayer is... can you guess? A Team. With Active Roster now out, it is easy to grab friends from your friends list and play with them. People who you are comfortable talking with are going to prove to be a lot better than random people you meet in matchmaking who may be one of a few things- They may not have a mic. They may be in private chat. They may be an a**hole. They may be just screwing around. Etc. If they managed to get on your friends list, they must have done something right. Now is a good time to reconnect with all your old friends with a fresh new game. If you have no choice but to go in by yourself or a partial party, make sure you change your social settings to make sure you get matched with serious players who will talk. Once again, as any Halo fan already knows- information is the key to victory. What this means is USE CALLOUTS! If you do not know the specific callout for the area, try to use generic terms, such as a weapon spawn location, or even a flag capture point from CTF. You can create your own if it's easier. The best way to maximize your kills is to let everyone know where the enemy is. Imagine it like this- What if you were facing against another team. The only difference is, your entire team has markers over their head for the enemy to see where you are. This is the difference between a screw-off team and a team who communicates. Oddball: On the Level Countdown, I've found that a good place to hold the ball is at the top of one of 2 main lifts in the center area. These rooms provide lots of cover, and allow for easy one-hit beatdowns with the oddball in case someone decides to go up the lift, or comes running into the two side entrances. With the two side entrances only having catwalks, it's easy to tell when an enemy is coming. I recommend using Drop Shield when you are in this area in case of any grenades. Also, the sword spawns in between the two lifts, so a teammate has something to cover you with. Stockpile: Many different strategies are being used in this gametype. However, some strategies are essential for snagging the win. One tip is to always be on the lookout for "pathway cuts". What this means is that there are certain paths to get to flags, and there are ways of putting flags in areas that are weighed more heavily to your team. For instance, be on the lookout for ledges which you could drop off a flag to a platform that is only accessible by your team's side. This strategy is used in all forms of CTF games. Another thing to keep in mind is to be aware of distance between you, your flag, and your capture point. The goal is to capture as many flags as quickly as possible. Sometimes, this means grabbing one flag, running it to a certain point, and dropping it near your base to be collected by another teammate. Then, you can grab another flag while you are still out away from your base. Also, be aware of the clock and when flags are going to be collected. Putting a flag in the collection zone when it still has 40 seconds to collect is just asking for it to be stolen. Something to try would be to crouch and hide in an area that is within about an 8 second distance from the flag capture point, and just hold onto the flag. When the countdown is near the end, make your run to your capture point. To the other team, it will look like no flags are in your capture point, but then as soon as flags are captured, you're points will go up by 2 or 3 simply because of your sneaky maneuvers. Headhunter: In Headhunter, the point of the game is to collect as many skulls as possible, as fast as you can. This means- stick to the movement enhancing armor abilities. Jetpack and Sprint is what you'll be equiping. On maps like Powerhouse and Sword Base, Jetpack will allow you to quickly ascend the different tiers of the map instead of running around and taking forever. On a map like The Cage, or Reflection, Sprint will allow you to quickly traverse the long corridors and keep you out of trouble. [Edited on 02.09.2011 10:17 PM PST]
