Well, you've gotten Institute and Brotherhood answers, so now to finish the triangle: Synths are robots made by the Institute. While Gen 1s & 2s are mostly mindless machines, Gen 3s were created with sentience. The Railroad is dedicated to helping to free these Gen 3 synths that are used as slaves. But before I go, I must ask... Do you have a Geiger counter?

Edited by Tamerov13: 2/11/2016 3:18:23 AMIn the Fallout universe, Synths were a series of androids created by the Institute of Technology. They come in three models: The 1st generation are little more than a mechanical endoskeleton with very little intellect and capabilities, aside from routine maintenance, basic combat tactics, and waste disposal. The 2nd generation are more resilient and have a higher level of intellect than their 1st generation cousins. In addition to this they are equipped with an artificial epidermis to more closely resemble humans. They are capable of more advanced tasks such as security, resource gathering, and are even capable of battlefield coordination. The 3rd generation is unique in that they technically are not androids. Instead of metals and plastics, they are built from real human biological tissue. Every red blood cell every neuron every muscle fiber is completely synthesized from the human body. Over time the Institute has made improvements to their biology making them stronger, more efficient than the average human. In addition to these biological enhancements their central nervous system receives cybernetic implants that link them to the Institute's network which allows the Institute to track their location and even allow a remote "shut down" and a memory wipe if necessary. The Institute primarily utilize them as sleeper agents among the various settlements and organizations in the wasteland; carrying out their day to day tasks, often completely unaware of who they truly serve...
