What purpose do they serve other than to provide aesthetic gear/ships/shaders/emblems? Why did Bungie even bother advertising factions when these aren't really factions? They're just vendors. That's it. Why haven't they been expanded in any sense other than selling Year 2 stuff instead of Year 1? Wouldn't it be cooler if each faction had high level gear to work toward? Not just the same stuff in a different color scheme?
I would LOVE to see factions actually be factions. They should have a common goal or play style and offer quests/missions/whatever in order to earn their gear. We should be able to meet up with other faction members to carry these things out...it'd be a fantastic way to expand the community in-game instead of forcing us to LFG on forums. No?

Man, faction PvP battles would be so fun. I dabbled in Guild Wars back in the day, and that was the best part. Sure wish Destiny could have something like that.

Factions are just another portion of the game that they gutted before it was released.

Because Reasons.... [Bungie Logic]

Factions exist because in early development Bungie used factions to justify PvP. Storyline wise why would guardians fight each other? The entire universe wants to end humanity... Fighting amungst ourselves seems like a waste of energy. Factions were designed to explain why we're kicking each others teeth in between killing gods. Game write happens, faction story gets slung to the side but the programmed mechanics remain. And here we are today, additional vendors who mean -blam!- all for overall story development.

More to grind

Just another part of the half a game they released.
