At the end of my rope.... PvP masters plz help a n00b out

You've heard the cry before... You'll no doubt hear it again... But I just cannot seem to make any headway with any form of PvP in this game. Ok so I'm a Yr2 player and PvP is NOT my thing, but I have really been trying to make an effort to play/learn maps/modes. Trials/IB/dailies... I feel like I'm clueless, I get killed out of nowhere, it's like opposition come out the walls. I know it's not 1 thing... My 'time to kill' is lower than my opponent, my accuracy is poorer, my gun choice is wrong, my position is bad. Practise you'll say... I can hear it now... Problem is how, or what... It gets to the point where I try to focus on 1 thing and it seems to get me nowhere... There is only so much more that I can take before I want to go do something more 'constructive' I know this is supposed to be fun... I guess my beef is the disappointment that a big part of the game is effectively closed to me... Well not closed but you get my drift All comments welcome but constructive ones would be nice... Isn't that the point of admitting you need help?

When I first started my kd sucked. It was the lowest on record. At 0.07 I don't think there was anyone lower. So I was gun-shy at playing PVP. I'd do it once a month just to see if I could get better. Then this winter I was playing IB and things started to click. I was killing more than I was getting killed. The maps and radar made since. Just keep at it buddy and don't let your low kd get to you. Ed. huskyed - PS4

  • When I first started playing Crucible, I sucked. I had played COD for the previous few years and I was not prepared for how much more Destiny resembled Halo's style of gunplay that rewarded accuracy, precision, and strafing/movement. I'm not an elite player by any means, but now I do well in the crucible, and that's because I put in hundreds of hours into it, mainly just grinding out Control matches. My advice to you is pick a loadout that is strong in the current meta, find a playlist that you enjoy, and just put in the hours. With time, you'll get better.

  • You have to understand right now you’re still lacking in experience. A lot of comments talk about watching streamers and picking up useful tips from them (especially regarding what guns to play with and how to organize your skill tree) but regardless you’re going to have to jump in those games and play your heart out to get better. Once you get better then you’ll be able to apply some of the advanced tactics that are used by the streamers. My first recommendation would be to spec your Warlock correctly since that’s the character you seem to like playing. Use Firebolts as your grenade, flame shield as your melee, Viking Funeral, and Touch of Flame (those two perks have to be used together to make them effective). If you decide to use your sticky nades then you can use double grenades since the burn is going to be less effective. I would also recommend trying to get armor that gets your tier 5 discipline. Discipline being the most important for a Sunsinger. Once you’ve done this, while in a match lead with your grenades. Firebolts are probably the best nade in the game right now and they allow you to keep opponents weak for a very long time. A couple more shots with your Mida will allow you to get the kill. You can lead with nades by understanding the radar and getting more familiar with where your opponents are hiding. You’ll get a better idea of when they are about to peak. When that happens drop the nade and get ready for 2-3 mida shots for the kill. Try to avoid close range gun fights if you’re using the Mida. Look at each map and understand spots you can get into that allow for medium length sight lines (not too far away because you’ll just end up losing sniper fights). And not too close since you’ll lose to rushing shotgunners along with a number of better close range guns (Autorifles and pulse rifles). Work on getting into those spots and fire away with your primary while ducking behind cover as often as possible. Start playing control. This is the easiest game mode to understand. Try and focus on getting solid sight lines on zone B since in control most players will congregate on that point. Clash is a game mode that is harder to understand where players are going to be…….creating an issue where you’ll get shot from random angles. Focus on Control and rift because those game modes are more predictable and help with your aim and making sure you get your shots. Once you’ve got a better understanding of the maps (I’m talking about hundreds of games) then work towards playing other game modes. Progression is going to be slow. Make sure you’re enjoying the game first and foremost. Take pride in the kills you get and don’t worry too much about getting killed. Try and learn from each death but don’t rage over it.

Max agility, and strafe side to side during gunfights to dodge bullets. Be aware of your radar and how many people are around you, including teammates. Back your teammates up, just follow them around and watch their back. Dont go an objective by yourself, ever. Dont challenge enemies if you're out numbered. Fall back to your teammates. Don't have tunnel vision. If you see an enemy and he's trying to get away, he's most likely leading you into a choke point or more of his teammates. So dont chase, its not worth it. This is the number one mistake noobs make in pvp.

  • Well, the problem seems to be that you have no idea what you are doing wrong which may mean you have no idea what you are doing in general or have some poor teammates, both of which are out of your control without a helpful friend or two.

  • Honestly one big thing I've learned to use effectively is the slide mechanic. Around corners, charging someone down, running away. It allows you change angles of shots, dodge, and make the shooter miss (hopefully). There are hundreds of tips, but I see a lot of newer people not utilize this small one very often. Good luck with the learning process! It'll come with time. And there are some good ideas in the comments for sure.

  • My secret is just stay aware and ready to jump, if you find a enemy dont lose your guard, try to get headshots and watch your back

  • Play rumble. Goal is to work on your aim so use nothing but your primary Just run up and engage your opponents and aim for their head. Should be easy after 5-6 games. Next your going to do the same except you're going to use cover and feel free to use grenades/melee this time around. Another 5-6 games here. Now your next goal is to stay alive at all cost. Stick to cover, run away when you're low on health. That should solve majority of your problems =D

  • 1. Ignore KD, it does matter, anybody who says it does just has a stick in their ass. 2. Use the radar: Hopefully you know what different things mean but always be checking the radar like mirrors in your car. 3. Map Awareness: This goes in tandem with #2, but just playing the game is going to make this easier for you. Tip: Use Nightstalker's Keen Scout to make this process easier and faster. After a while you will find it not necessary and can use another subclass or what not. 4. Use Caution: If you aren't careful you can walk right into somebody hardscoping and get killed with ease. If you know a sight line commonly has hardscopers than you can go and use an emote and actually go into third person and are able to see if anybody is hardscoping. Tip: I prefer the sit down emote, that way nothing pops into the feed. 5. Find a gun you like: Unfortunately certain guns are favored like the MIDA or TLW, but there are great guns out there that you might want to try out. I recently got a fantastic auto rifle (on my Titan BTW) and while it isn't in the Meta Mainstream I can do fantastic with it. 6. Build around your playstyle. I can usually run anything, but you might prefer something over the other. If you like sniping, than an auto rifle or Pulse Rifle might suit you well. But if you like to use Shotguns than a scout rifle might work better. These are some of my personal tips.

  • 1. Learn to use the radar 2. Play Control and then Clash. 3. Learn to use the radar 4. Even when solo, stick with your team, watch how they move/act. 5. Learn to use the radar 6. Learn the maps. 7. Learn to use the radar 8. Pick YOUR gun, forget the meta, pick something you like to use. 9. Learn to use the radar 10. Pick a subclass and stick to it while you learn. 11. Learn to use the radar 12. Ignore K/D(for now) 13. Learn to use the radar 14. Try to have fun, take the small victories where you can get em. :D

    • Advice from a skilled PvP player. Learn the maps before other things. This can help you flank enemies, control zones, hide, etc. Practice each weapon type on a lower sensitivity to find your calling. Don't be afraid to use tactics some might call noobish. If you want to use thorn, use it. If you want to blink shotgun, do it. If you can, play everyday. Practice makes perfect. Take video of your gameplay and have a skilled player critique it. Watch pro player gameplays, such as twitch streams, sweats, or organized tournaments. Use their techniques and build upon them.

      • I'm not very good at crucible either. But a friend of mine that's pretty good told me to slow down, just take in the map a little bit. Don't worry so much about kills. If you have someone come after you, go for it. But otherwise, don't chase a fight down. Also, 3 vs 3 or 6 man games will give you a little bit more room to grow and practice, than a 12 man battle. Less people=more time to find you bearings.

      • I am no pro but there are a lot of things you can work on bar basic gun skill which is just practice and muscle memory. Putting it simply everyone starts off poorly, your never going to go into any game you don't know and instantly wipe the floor with everyone, always remember the people your going up against are going to be real people that want to kill you in game just as much as you and will show no mercy, treat them the same. A few good things you can do, think about what your doing when your doing it, if you see a glowing red around the corner on your radar, why peak? You know there is more than 1 enemy, your putting yourself at a disadvantage, try find an advantageous spot to attack from, going gun hoe is fun but also reckless and will ultimately end in you dying most of the time The radar is a stupidly useful tool that so many people fail to utilize, using simple maneuver such as jumping above your target to break their line of sight can give you the edge you need to win the encounter. Or flanking around the side when opposition is busy with other players. Learn when to push and when to back off, if you get a tag on someone with a grenade or a sniper shot but there is more than one, why push? Your going to be double teamed most of the time. Find a game style that suits you, are you aggresive? If so probably run a shotgun and a effective close range primary such a hand cannon or auto rifle. If you are more passive then try running with more long distance weapons to stay away from the thick of it and pick off targets with snipers and scouts, in Destiny its good to have all the distances covered. Use and know your abilities carefully, no point in throwing things like lightning/tripmines at the floor, no one is gonna run through them, throw them on the wall, much more effective. Try and predict what the enemy is going to do and act accordingly, you would be amazed how many times you can outplay someone so simply. Finally I would recommend saving games that you play and re-watch them, figure out what went wrong where and why, then try and correct it to avoid making mistakes like that again, it will also explain any bizarre deaths you may encounter. Also youtube, there are some fantastic players that upload crucible school videos that help you to improve as a player, simply watching and playing with the best will make you a better player. Here are some useful players to watch: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCY6Qy4qU-d13U42280CxIvA - TrueVanguard - One of the best snipers in the game and a player that really thinks about what he is doing live in game and he is an extremely effective player, he regularly uploads tips and tricks videos on how to improve as a player. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCswnhXz7qEVxHGEks0IvcfQ - SirDimetrious - A brilliant sniper again and all around a wonderful player, only starting playing PVP in Destiny and has since become one of the most lethal players in the crucible. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI0fV325v5QniwVJ74PAVcA - Mtashed - A great player who explains in depth what he is doing when he doing it, he also reviews players gameplay and gives constructively criticism and breaks down the plays, very useful videos to improve. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCT9QJ4-bcf8EY0ZZU2CX-Hw - Kjhovey - One of the best players in the game, on his day he will take apart anyone with comfort, scary good player, just by watching this guy you will learn a thing or to. Ultimately along with all these tips and tricks, learning the maps, the weapons, your abilities and your builds there is only one thing you can do to improve ... practice, you can learn alot without being a good player but practice is what will gel it all together. Hope this helps you, good luck in the crucible guardian.

What's your console? I suggest streaming and having a buddy watch you and critique/advise during gameplay. If that isn't possible find someone to follow you around in pvp willing to coach you.

        • You need to figure out what you are good at and ride with it. Possibly even switching classes to better suit your play style. You could very well just not be meshing with your current set up. Find what you like and practice

        • I took advise from this forum and it helped me. Try switch off your controller vibration Play defensively, play with a safe distance from opponent Use a weapon that you felt most comfortable and confident with. To evaluate a weapon, try it without the perk trees upgraded. Perks makes a poor weapin good, and makes a good weapon perfect.
