10 myths of game development debunked

Goes a long way to explaining why so many AAA titles are so flawed these days, especially at launch. It sounds like a bloody rough industry, even if I'd still love to be a part of it in an ideal world. Thoughts? Wow, what the shit is going on with this link?

    • This is why I hate it when people are so dismissive of game devs and talk shit about them. This industry is among the worst to work for, and it is exceedingly rare that a game is bad due to negligence on the part of developers. Gamers really, really need to understand this about developers.

      • Extremely rough and competitive industry. Not even the Giants of the industry are safe. The GameCube and N64 nearly killed Nintendo, though the Wii brought them back. This show show fragile success is in the gaming industry.

        • Great article however I think they've misinterpreted the "Games developers are lazy" I don't think anyone actually believes they don't work hard I think they actually meant making the same game year on year instead of pushing the boundaries a little I understand why they don't if they're successful change too much and you piss your fanbase off change very little you still piss them off for not changing anything its quite the balancing act of changing enough that it's different but the core gameplay of what made your game successful is still there. "Game development is easy" does anyone actually believe this? "DLC is evil" I have thought that many times although I do truly believe that there it's not bad when its done right Borderlands comes to mind

          • Thank you so much for posting this. People don't seem to understand that things cost money and how grueling of a workplace the video game industry is. Not everything is free and they treat companies as a single entity, forgetting that there are several individual people who work there trying to make a living and doing what they enjoy. People also tend to forget that games are getting bigger, more problems are going to be encountered. Developers, unfortunately, can't keep pushing games back until they are flawless because the people working on the game need to get it out so they can make money to live. DLC is kind of a double edged sword. If implemented properly, it's completely fine. If I can continue my story/experience on a game without hindering my progress it's cool. I have the choice as to whether or not I want to expand my adventure. When it comes to something like Destiny, I'm a bit more iffy about that. From a corporate perspective, DLC is good because, as stated before, it helps people make a living, especially since the price of games hasn't been adjusted in a long time. DLC helps make back some of the money lost during game production because inflation, while also giving people something to work on. Really, look at story writers, they need something to do once they're done writing the game's main story. So why not work on something to expand the current one? All-in-all this article was very well written and gives gamers a bit of a better insight to the gaming industry. I just hope people won't be too quick to write it off and ignore it.

          • Yeah a lot of that is true after talking and listening to people from all sides of the industry from development to publisher to QA and all of the jobs in between. It's why we saw quite a bit of recognizable names start their own smaller company (indie) because they wanted to move away from the toxicity and mismanagement that seems to follow with bigger name companies.

Does sound rough. I'd imagine it's an extremely competetive industry. I don't buy everything said in the article, but most of it seems honest.
