Marty O'Donnel is gone because he stood up to activision

http://venturebeat.com/2015/09/04/ex-bungie-composer-marty-odonnell-wins-epic-legal-fight-with-former-bosses/ Good read. Appear he is gone because he didn't want to be pushed around by activision. Edit: 1100 replies. this blew up way more than I thought it would. What people should really take away from this is that all those leaks last year that Bungie had Deej come out and try to discredit were most likely real. Granted, O'Donnel could have behaved more professionally, but he was one of the founding members and responsible for a lot of their success. His music contributed greatly to the tone of the halo series and he deserved to be treated with more respect for activsion.

Started a new topic: Activion's actions have angered a God.(6 Replies))

  • I don't blame him one bit after Microsoft dictated his work for years post-Halo: CE. Each Halo essentially had the same music rehashed to sound more developed. I can't call Marty remarkable talented but no one should stand to see their work suffer for petty marketing reasons. That being said I do wish him well for future projects.

    • No need for professionalism when the empire you stood by, the team you watched rise, slowly dies and succumbs to the visceral nature of marketing. Bungie had a plan. Now? I'm not sure.

Bungie cutting content, completely changing the story and ruining the game thanks to activision is something i said at day 1 and all the fan boys screamed thats lies and not confirmed by bungie like little sheeple. The evidence is in what we got lets see. game was missing tons of story and content we saw in trailer. The article talks about massive change toward release date. Game had day 1 season pass/ DLC preorder. The content in the trailer is in fact now dlc, see the reef in the original trailer as one example. DLC content is found on disc because people glitched into it and even collected ghosts. Story made no sense and was extremely short. worlds promised in trailer was not found in vanilla destiny such as saturn. Game mechanics such as your drop ship dropping you off as well as friends live during game play doesn't appear also destructible drops ships as well ( this is said because it wouldn't work on the older consoles and they wanted to maximize profits so they weakened current gen destiny for old gen destiny, they sort of admitted they took down the graphics etc of current gen destiny to keep it on par with last gen)

Interesting snippet from an article on Yahoo. TL;DR: Activision is poison, and Bungie is obviously lead by a bunch of morons and scumbags since 1) they chose to partner with them in the first place and 2) tried to steal Marty's stock options after termination. Edit: Don't forget about Joe Staten (creator of Destiny's story) leaving Bungie in September 2013. This article confirms that the story changed substantially in August 2013, which pretty much confirms that Staten left because Activision screwed up Destiny entirely. Looks like Joe and Marty both left because they were fed up with Activision. Edit #2: Anyone remember 404Architect from a year ago? Remember how many people didn't believe him, and yet everything he posted has pretty much been legitimized? Remember DeeJ trying to discredit him? Lawd, this company has no shame. Link to reddit thread from almost a year ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/DestinyTheGame/comments/2hrpzx/ama_request_someone_from_bungie_or_activision_who/ckvowy2
O’Donnell reacted angrily and believed Activision had overstepped its proper role by assuming artistic control of the trailer music. Ryan, the CEO of Bungie, and management shared his concern and filed a “veto” letter with Activision, which overruled the objection. During E3, O’Donnell tweeted that Activision, not Bungie, had composed the trailer music. He also threatened Bungie employees in an attempt to keep the trailer from being posted online, and interrupted press briefings. The court filings say that O’Donnell believed he was preserving Bungie’s “creative process, artistic integrity, and reputation, keeping faith with fans, and protecting Bungie and its intellectual property from Activision’s encroachment into artistic decisions.” According to O’Donnell’s view, the “Band of Brothers” ethos that had inspired the group’s earlier work was being damaged by the Activision relationship.

While Destiny was planned for a September 2013 release, the story was substantially revised in August 2013.
Traveler was originally evil confirmed.

          • And Joseph Staten was fired because he wanted more from the game (story in particular) and not the hollow shell that launched.

            • Good for him. Can't believe they tried to his stocks away. How did they think they could get away with that? I guess activision really is getting as evil as people say.

I wonder if anyone at Bungie will avoid talking about this in public, and if they will go back to being cagey like they have been up until recently.

              • Look. If I mouth off loudly enough about my boss, it's called "Insubordination". If I do it too much, I get suspended for a few days. If I keep doing it, I get suspended for a week or two. If I absolutely won't quit running my suck, I get fired. You have a choice if you don't like the way the boss, or the boss' boss, is running things; you look for other employment, or you man the hell up and do the job the way they tell you to. If you're the head of your department, you toe the company line. Make your objections known in private; if your recommendations aren't followed, you have your marching orders. March. What you DON'T do is gripe openly about management, disobey your marching orders, then cry foul when you're fired for it. From what I've read here, that sounds like what happened. This is how it is when you're employed. Being an artiste does not grant immunity from being fired. But in that world it's called "creative differences".

Why do you all hate business? You are sitting here blaming Bungie for doing something that any and every company would do in that position. Do you fail to have any concept of how businesses need to make money, do you know how ruthless the gaming industry really is. This guy carried on like a pork chop because they didn't use his music in a trailer, and you sit here and say how it is proof that Bungie has come apart at the seams. Then you claim the lead story writer was fired and that they changed the story. Well yeah, you would probably find that in his contract that any creative copyright stayed his if he quit or was fired, meaning they probably legally had to change the story. Funny little story, remember how Xbox was going to make the "One" always on DRM and that you wouldn't be able to use preowned games. Do you realise that it would have made games cheaper, and gaming industry more able to take bigger risks because instead of the main bulk of their revenue coming from the first two months of a games release it would constantly filter in as piracy and preowned games wouldn't be able to exist. Why has Destiny changed? Because half you idiots scream to nerf and the other half scream to buff, because making a game like this that appeals to such a broad audience, that brings people over from in depth rpgs, and basic shooters from no to little gaming experience and from casual to hardcore gamers and giving them all an interaction that they enjoy is nigh impossible. Edit: seems op has changed his original post and so mine doesn't make sense now.
