Hidden Rank/Trueskill

I apologize if it has been confirmed or not that Reach playlists have a hidden rank, like the Halo 3 social playlists did. Either way, my post is not about it's truth. My post is about why hidden rank is bad. There are already enough requirements for getting a game in Halo. To Reach's credit it does not require same sized parties getting matched up, as previous installments of Halo have had. There are also a good amount of playlists so players are spreadout amongst them. When you factor this in with connection and everything else, it can take a bit to find a game unless there are over 50,000 people in a playlist. Other than Team Slayer, this is true of every playlist. In many online competitive games (namely Call of Duty) you just get thrown into a lobby with random people and play right away. It's awesome! If you're getting owned you can quit and get a new game right away! Another reason other than slow matchmaking is that people don't always want to have to fight for a win. There used to be ranked playlists for people who wanted competitive games. In Reach there is Arena. Sure, if you take Hidden Rank out then good people can bash on bad people, but that is better than no gameplay whatsoever, which is what Halo 3 became for me, my friends, and many others. Arena is for the serious business people, and leave the rest of it alone. Let randoms play randoms and don't bring rank into it, because then no game becomes social since you're constantly clawing for a win. Clawing for a win is what Arena and ranked playlists can be for! tl;dr version: Hidden rank is bad. It significantly slows matchmaking in addition to making "social" playlists no fun. I know this isn't a problem in Reach since the population is still high, but what about when it drops to a stable rate like in Halo 3? Matchmaking will take ages. A game of pros beating on noobs is better than no game at all! [Edited on 09.24.2010 3:42 AM PDT]
