Year One Armor/Weapons Obsolete?

I'm on board with Destiny: TTK. I'm all aboard the hype train. And this ride has no stops. Choo-fookin-choo. But help me come to terms with this... From what I've read, and let me tell you now I read these things amidst my sleep deprived/incoherent moments at 4am, our old weapons and gear will not be boarding this train with us. My understanding is that the current weapons and armor we have (with the exception of Exotics) will stay at their current stats when it comes to defense/attack. Essentially making these weapons and armors obsolete to those in TTK. If this is true, so be it. But...
get your popcorn
I feel as if I'm being locked out of the things I worked for. Trials gear, Iron Banner Gear, and my original armor pieces that I hold so close. All these are now obsolete? I liked the idea of having our Guardians grow with time, and become chiseled out as time went on. Slowly becoming what we wanted them to be. wait for it... Legend. As a Day One/Year One player, I lose my individuality with this. How do we stand out now? We'll be working with the same materials as Year Two players.
Which, by the way, I welcome whole-heartedly.
Besides our Year One emblems, we won't, really. Now take a deep breath before you comment. And let me reiterate this here, I'm not angry. I'm not balling my eyes out and assuming the fetal. I'm just a little thrown off is all. I'm fairly new to this MMO crowd, so, maybe this is just how these things work. But if this is, in fact, how it will be- I'll move on. Just hoping it isn't. I mean, when TDB came out, they had no plans of ascending old gear, and look what they did later on! Bam, ascension. Thanks for hearing me out Guardians. Have a good morning! Or night, if you're into that lifestyle.

  • This is the reason why I will quit Destiny for now. Year one grinder, year one lover. But we get kicked in the nuts for buying directly. Everything we earned hardly is pointless now. New players get the stuff in days, less grinding, less effort. So why put in the time into Destiny, when I can get the full experience end of next summer/fall sometime after the next two DLCs have been released. Buy it cheaper, have less effort and waste less time!

Yes, year 1 gear won't board this train with you based on the limited info we have now. As for your TDB vs HoW changes. All that was year 1. They made a way for year 1 items to stay relevant for year 1... but year 1 only. I think... and it hasn't been said... that each year there will be a refresh. The annual clean out your closet and go for a new look type of thing. So, 9/15/2015 items will probably stay good until 9/2016. Then clean out your closet again. At least that's what I'm betting will happen.

    • Go read Planet Destiny's article. They've stayed you'll be able to sacrifice new stuff to make your old stuff more powerful.

      • I will love it if the first set of new white gear is better than legendary gear...this game needs to mixed up to keep it engaging...every expansion need to abolish the old gear to make room for the new gear. Makes the new gear relevant and sought after...its a good thing...keep the old as a good memory you know :).

        • https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/144097729/0/0/1 Cozmo said not to dismantle anything until they answer all of our questions after GamesCom. I'm hopeful for something related to the public GI article's statement about upgrading by breaking another item of the same kind (they used Helmets to upgrade Helmets as an example). It could be a transmog system or an upgrade of attack/defense without transferring perks or something else. We'll have to wait for the Twitch Q&A to see.

            • There's this tendency to cite your information.... Add a link to what you read. Don't remember? Spend a few minute tracking it down. Otherwise the conversation is a waste of time. I think it's possible that gear in general, both weapons and armor, might be changing so much that the current armory just doesn't fit as part of Destiny going forward. I feel like devs put ideas out in the wild that have no credible source to see what the general reaction is to them. You can see them scattered about the Internet... And they spark information. A lot of players came back because of the etheric light Ascension system. People responded really well to pathways for keeping relevant what we earned and love to use. It's hard to develop content on top of old, and Bungie is learning that thier player base isn't nearly as willing to part with thier stuff like the in house crew is. How do you balance a new vision for gear on top of an existing meta? If new gear (both weapons and armor) go by your player level to determine efficacy then where does 365 attack come in? What's the point of gear with 42 light? There are a ton of questions revolving around this whole expansion. I'm excited to see what kind of compromise (if any) Bungie comes up with. That said, I think there's pros and cons to completely resetting the entire user base. The frustrations of wasted effort are equal to exploring the nuances if a new system to me. Any way you dice it I'm never going to dismantle some things...

              • Level is entirely exp based now, I think armour, and therefore individuality, will be viable.

              • Preordered the collectors edition I've put in enough time might aswell Plus on the topic of armour maybe they will implement a sort of upgrading npc ( i hope) But maybe it will become useless, only time will tell

                • Hmmmm since it's our armor that gets us to max level, and if I understand things right, light level will be no longer, so with removing light off of our armor therefor rewinding us to level 20 ((I really -blam!-ing hope we don't get thrown back to level 20)) then our armor will not be affected in leveling up as it'd XP based not light based, so I think we can keep our old armor, but weapons... I don't think so.
