Destiny Update 2.0.0

Disclaimer: Extensive commentary below... Several years back, Egypt's government was in an egregious state. The citizens there were having to endure the effects of the leadership that was in place, which was making the lives of its people utterly miserable. These people were left feeling anywhere from furious to distraught to hopeless. One Egyptian in particular made the news here in the States. This man felt so overwhelmed by the state of affairs in his country that his only rational reaction was to set himself on fire. Think about that for a moment. This individual felt so encumbered by what was going on that he viewed causing extreme harm to himself was his only option at that point. After reading the 2.0.0 update that is coming to Destiny, I find myself in the same state of mind as this Egyptian man. The developer's have repeatedly proven one thing to me: they do not understand how to improve the game without handicapping it further. With the single exception of improving the damage for shotguns, they have continued to make the game more difficult to enjoy. The update that is about to be imposed, and worse yet the justification behind these upcoming changes, pushed me to do something that I have never done - I actually logged on to the website to post the extreme disdain that has been building up inside me since House of Wolves was released. Before I address the update, I want to touch on the House of Wolves DLC real quick. HoW did two things very wrong. First, it was released without a raid. Given the problems that still plague Crota's End and Vault of Glass, I understood this decision. However, with the introduction of etheric light into the game, reaching 34 was accomplished inside of two weeks (and I was playing it slow to lengthen my enjoyment of the new content). Because the DLC didn't take the same approach as the one that came before it where you had to first be fortunate enough to get the gear and then work tirelessly to get the material to level that gear up, HoW ended up being the same price for about 1/10 of the experience. The other major problem is that the new guns, and moreover the new perks, that have been introduced are worthless. I have found two weapons to be worth keeping while the rest are trash compared to what I have accumulated thus far. I'd be surprised if other seasoned players didn't feel the exact same way. Since the older weapons are far superior, I have no use for the 95+% of the new stuff. With that in mind, let's (finally) discuss the 2.0.0 update... Auto Rifles are worthless in this game. They were in need of a damage buff awhile back because they are fairly weak in both PvE and PvP. Instead, they got nerfed. Why? Because of the Suros Regime. This once great gun was a stand out exotic (as all exotics should be) until people who were bad in PvP kept complaining because they couldn't keep up with it. They got killed and instead of getting smarter, they cried because their pride told them that they are good players who were getting cheated. The developers heard this and nerfed all ARs by 2.5% over a distance and the Suros Regime in particular by 13%. The absolute worst gun in the game (the Necrochasm) was given the 2.5% damage back in an effort to make it a usable option. So, they took a bad gun, made it even worse, then restored it back to being bad and called it a solution. It still takes well over a clip to kill moderate strength enemies WITH ARC BURN. So in the new update, ARs didn't get more damage; rather, they got less range. That makes perfectly no sense. Who is getting owned by ARs in PvP these days? If you are dying at longer range from an AR, you need to re-evalute your presence in the Crucible. What are the developers thinking? You reduced the universal effectiveness of an EXOTIC weapon, a type of gun that I can only carry one of at a time (which are supposed to make me struggle with which one I should use because they SHOULD all have a specific advantage for their classification level), and then decided to apply a similar penalty to all guns of the same type? I 100% do not understand. The rest of this post will be continued in the comments section, as I cannot fit the rest into the field provided.

My next (and possibly biggest issue) is with the changes to Hand Cannons and Scout Rifles. HCs are getting a reduction in ammo size while SRs are getting an increase to make them harder to choose between since HCs are the stronger choice. What I find to be absolutely ridiculous about this decision is that the developers don't seem to understand the concept of preference. People use the guns that fit their play style. Not everyone uses the gun that does the most damage per shot but rather the gun that does the most damage for their play style (unless it's an AR). SR fans prefer rate of fire over HC damage. HCs already have fewer shots in them than SRs do for this reason. Why in hell are HCs getting a reduction in ammo? To make me consider both options? No, to deter me from using the gun type that I prefer in favor of a less desirable option. I get the idea behind this decision, but it is not OK for the developers to punish me for using the option that I prefer and try to force me to use weapons that I don't care for as much. All exotic HCs are getting punished for being exotics, and I honestly don't understand why. I get that exotic SRs are lackluster in terms of perks comparatively, but that is all based on PvP performance. Exotic HCs are PvP weapons. Period. The Hawkmoon is still an effective option, but the nature of aiming it makes it less desirable in PvE and more well suited for PvP. The Thorn, which is a pain in the ass to get for a reason, it is not the best option in PvE. Against a group of Thrall or Dregs, it works well with the hidden over-penetrate perk. Outside of this one scenario, it takes anywhere from most of the clip to a good bit of the second clip to knock out medium tier enemies. Worst of all, the bleed doesn't stack, and in PvE it desperately needs to with EVERY SINGLE SHOT that connects. The adjustment to this with the update to make five shots stack with 1/3 of the overall effect is closer to the solution, but not at the cost of the damage in PvE. IT'S AN EXOTIC GUN! Make all shots have the bleed, reduce the strength of the bleed because of this, and leave the ammo count in the HC alone. If the gun is too crazy in PvP, then nerf it accordingly for PvP only. A universal handicap that pours over into all HCs is not the answer. As I stated before, the Hawkmoon is also more of a Crucible weapon. It is not the hardest weapon to get in the game. The Gjallarhorn is the most sought after option. I get adjusting the error with the additional damage perks in PvP. I disagree with it but I understand it. However, again, this change should be to PvP only. The Last Word is a monster in PvP as well. It's another story in PvE. Yet again, the changes affect both areas. HCs are meant to be aimed. The Last Word takes a different approach and leans toward the player firing from the hip, which is cool for the Wild West theme that it portrays. The new change punishes the gun for being this way since it's too powerful in the Crucible, apparently. Why is this change universal and why does it penalize the gun for being special? Lower the damage in PvP and be done with it. Oh no, let's force people to play with SRs instead by making HCs less desirable. Brilliant. Then we have the idea of reducing shotgun power because of fusion rifles. How about you make fusion rifles comparatively strong/effective to shotguns instead of nerfing this gun type which was formerly useless until you made the single good decision to fix them? Why are you undoing your improvements? Take away range from high impact shotguns, maintain medium range for medium and lower impact shotguns. Shotguns are the preferred alternative not because of power but more because of timing. The charge rate on FRs makes them far less desirable. Solution? Reduce charge times for FRs but also slightly decrease impact and stability. That makes them more desirable. SPEAKING OF CHARGE TIMES, the Icebreaker is a perfect example of going in the wrong direction in terms of adjustments. The developers clearly have no understanding of what is happening in the minds of players that use this exotic weapon. The charge time between shots makes sense given the perk, but this charge time needed to be reduced, NOT INCREASED TO EIGHT GODDAMN SECONDS! You know what happens when I'm using the Icebreaker and I run out of shots? I have to sit and wait for it to recharge. This isn't a "special" moment in my gaming experience. I get benched while my friends/teammates continue to kill the enemy/boss without me. I am sidelined. My solution has been to switch to the Icebreaker while waiting on my synth to recharge so that I can switch to a different sniper rifle that I can actually use more effectively. If I am using a sniper rifle, it's because I need to hit something from further away. I don't switch to my primary while I wait for ammo to recharge. I do end up sitting behind cover waiting to be useful again. Is it my choice to use this gun? Yes. With the new update, I have zero use for this once exotic gun. What was once frustrating will now become unbearable. In PvP, longer charge times makes sense, but not in PvE. The decision to adjust how the Black Hammer works is one change that I support, though. Infinite ammo is great but the use of reserve until it's gone is a fair and smart change. Lastly, in changing Gjallarhorn's effectiveness in any way, you enrage the ENTIRE community. LEAVE. IT. ALONE. Are things literally as bad as the scenario that I detailed at the very beginning? Of course not. It's still just a game and we can stop playing at any time. It'll never be THAT serious. However, given this update and how badly TTK has been marketed and explained thus far, I relate to the Egyptian man. I am tremendously angry and see no reason to invest anything more going forward given how my favorite PS4 game is being handled by the developers. Thank you for reading.
