Thoughts on Cozmo's hiring.

Fine with CM from Reddit

Rather have CM from Bungie.net

Note: Before I go into this, I'd like it to be known that I don't have anything against Cozmo. I've never met him, and I've only heard good things about him from some friends who have met him. This is about the circumstances of his hiring. ----- Ok, now with that out of the way, it's about to get saltier than the Atlantic in here. When reading through his introduction, the phrases that really stuck out to me were "Destiny community", and "I come from the Destiny subreddit." I'll break this down seperately as to why they bother me. As RagnarokUnbound pointed out to me, Bungie never used the term "Halo Community." We were, and always have been, the Bungie Community. We are the Seventh Column. Cozmo's coming from a place that pretty unanimously likes Destiny. The subreddit doesn't have to deal with #Gaming and #Offtopic, that, for the former, is indifferent to the game, and in the case of the latter, completely dislikes the game. This website is a multi-purpose platform for communication and interaction between people. I'm in 15 groups, and none of them are Destiny-centric. We may have come here for one reason or another (mostly Halo: Reach), but we stay for each other, and not Destiny. "I come from the Destiny subreddit" is the second part of this problem. It comes off as if they're proud to ignore candidates from Bungie.net. There are a few employees that I can think of right now that came up through this community, that understand the dynamics, and would have made better CM's, and that line rubs it in that this website is getting overlooked by its owners again, in favor of a place full of people that most of us have never heard of. So now, we're stuck with someone that has no idea what we, as Bungie.net users want, because how could he? r/destinythegame doesn't have groups, so how could he know that Bungie gutted the features out of them? Reddit doesn't have titles, so how could he deliver Mythic status back if he doesn't know what it is? Maybe I'm cutting him short, but it's irritating to me, as a long-time user of this website, to see DeeJ pick his personal friends from TTK, and a guy who run a subreddit, over someone that's paid their dues to the Column.

I don't know about Cozmo's history and background, but at the end of the day, even though those things are nice, the person's actions are what matters most, in my opinion. I do know that Cozmo came to visit a charity stream last weekend (Operation Supply Drop). He not only played in it, but he was there at the end in the chat. He encouraged people to donate and he donated himself. I appreciated that. I also love the Community Creations spot. I'm not sure how involved he was with that, but if he was, awesome work there. I have posted my Destiny piano pieces before on the forums and I have had to monitor it carefully for it to get any views, constantly commenting and such and it was a lot of frustrating work. Now, I just post and go away, and the views come in, WAY more than before. The design is so much better. Those are my thoughts. He seems like a nice guy. He seems like he has good ideas. So yay :)

  • Burn, baby, I love you and agree with most of which you say. On that note, I think it's a little early to let loose the hounds. I can't say I frequent the Destiny subreddit, but I've stopped by more than a few times and the place seems rather well put together. I feel your reservations, and I acknowledge your concerns, but I say we give him our support and see what he can do before we string him up. Unless Cozmo is into that sort of thing. In which case I've got some rope in my car. ;)

    • His first weekly post was..... Well... LAME! I do not care about pictures of the team in Germany partying it up. Give me useful information that is relevant to the new upcoming game. Do not play games with upcoming specifics, the community is already raging, time to calm the waters.

      • I always had a problem with how they picked mods back in the day. The selection procedure seemed highly biased and in 9/10 cases they'd grab someone from *insert name of group*, some bungie.org regular and/or close friend. It rarely (never) felt like they went for some "neutral" bungie.net contributor. I also had a problem with how the staff seemed to spend more time on gaf and other sites, rather than their own. That said, from what I can understand ,Cozmo actually works for Bungie now, he's not just some volunteer. This changes things. So no, I don't have a problem with Cozmo being - in some peoples eyes - an outsider.

        • I say let him do his thing as of now. I've never really heard or known of this guy outside of the Destiny subreddit, but considering this website functions similarly to Reddit, he should at least know how people would respond to said comments and feedback. His pinned threads seem to show some attention to the entirety of the forum, I'll give him that. We just need to get his attention, try to show him the old Bungie community still exists. And even then we have to pray he does something about it. If he doesn't deliver, then he doesn't deliver. Wouldn't be the first time Bungie failed to connect to their own forum community. Questions, though: Does that mean DeeJ is no longer community manager or is Cozmo just DeeJ's sidekick? Also who would write the Weekly Updates?

        • I will give him a chance... but the 'Destiny community' thing rubbed me the wrong way too. As you said, we were never the 'Halo community.' It scares me that we have another person that cares only about Destiny and all. Even Deej says he was in part picked because he was not a 'casual.' Everything is about Destiny, not Bungie. Bungie has made it abundantly clear their standing community means nothing compared to the masses that joined due to Destiny. But I do always hope that if we complain long enough they will start to give a shit again. Two and a half years and counting, now.

Are you really surprised, the only way to ever get into a position in the community is to get into the right circlejerks. As you and other people pointed out, the guy was a member of the same group that Deej was active in and obviously they knew each other, which obviously holds priority to things like his lack of activity on the mains of the site. Really, they did a similar thing with the majority of mods and mentors added recently, most of them knew the prior mods/bungie employees, some of the people that made mod I have hardly ever seen post in the mains, but they post in groups where mods/employees are at, ect.

              • After I first read the OP today I really wanted to come in and write a long post about how if this were pre Bungie.next or even for a year after Bungie.next I would have been really concerned. But after literally years of trying to get Bungie to care about the website and Community and make improvements to it, I've kind of given up. The state of Bungie.next and the Community used to really upset me but you can only sustain that level of concern for so long before you just get used to being disappointed by Bungie. I'm not going to cast judgment on this new guy before he even has a chance to do anything, who knows maybe he'll turn it all around, but I don't have high hopes. So like I said I'm not upset or concerned I've just been in a constant state of disappointment for about two years now and this doesn't really do anything to alleviate it.

                    • Hah! Had a similar emotional response as you when I read it: "Really? Someone from Reddit over someone from here? We are all betrayed!" But then the emotional response faded and the fact that I can't judge how well of a job he's going to do until he does it. He's an individual and should be treated as such. So, here's to hoping he's the unexpected choice who won us over by doing an amazing job as a community manager.

                      • I'm neutral here. Nobody hired could bring back the former glory or come near it. If the men and women in charge would allow it I believe it would have happened already. Unfortunately I believe the higher powers around here won't allow these things because it would be off putting to the destiny members seeing as they'd initially be outcast. I'm going to reserve judgment but I'm not holding high hopes for anything to change too much around here.
Bungie never used the term "Halo Community." We were, and always have been, the Bungie Community. We are the Seventh Column.
Sadly, nothing about B.old means anything to the current admins. That's been demonstrated ad nauseum the past 2 1/2 years. It doesn't surprise me that they have selected an "outsider" (I don't know if he ever visited B.net before or not) in the least. The focus to branch Destiny out to a wider audience seems to carry more weight than keeping up a B.net heritage so to speak. But there are far fewer of us pre-darkness members than post these days. So nothing is ever going to be like it was.
his personal friends from TTK
TTL All in all, I'll give the guy a chance. But I doubt we'll ever cross paths. He'll be #Destiny, and I'm not.

                            • I find it acceptable. From their point of view, I believe they WANTED someone that had a hard background on the Destiny community and the game itself. Deej is still the Bungie CM as that part will remain for a very long time till the end of Bungie. But considering the Destiny community alone is growing and becoming more vocal (and coupled with the fact that Deej doesn't have much hands on experience with the game itself), they needed someone to quell the masses of Destiny alone. Cozmo fits this role well. He comes from a large Destiny community and has a considerable more experience than Deej when it comes to playing. And since he is not involved in the back end of the development, he will be able to do exactly what people have been clamoring for Deej to do....focus on the community. With Cozmo, he will be a (more) vocal voice than Deej has been and make it feel like someone is out there interacting with us as the game progresses. We weren't looking for a CM that was going to moderate the #Gaming or #Offtopic, we were looking for a CM that was going to answer us when we had worries about this game they've been pushing so hard to us. Cozmo is now that guy we've been asking for, for a long time. I think they did well.
