I'm Not Ready For College

So, my first year at a university started last summer. I basically failed all of my classes. I wasn't ready then, and I'm not ready now. I personally think it's best if I give myself some time to grow up and gain some work experience before giving college a second go. My parents, however, insist that I immediately head straight back in. My dad is currently willing to pay for my way through college, but won't be if I don't attend this year. But I'm almost certain I'll just fail again, meaning more wasted money that I'll have to pay back myself. Any advice?

  • You have to treat college as a full-time job. Don't spend time partying, use any free time you have to study. If you have trouble with a subject, seek help. Be resourceful.

    • If you aren't ready now will you ever be? If it's a book smart problem then you slowly lose your book smarts every year away from school/ a job that involves them. If your just too lazy then -blam!- you I would've jumped at the opportunity to have college paid for.

    • I'm starting community college next month (I just graduated H.S in May) I'm kinda angry & nervous because my process felt ridiculously complicated. I wish I got advice (I could careless about friends, didn't have any in H.S cause I went to 3 different ones. Majority of young people are stupid, suck & judgementsl anyways - I don't need those types of people.)

    • Talos the mighty! Talos the unerring! Talos the unassailable! To you we give praise! We are but maggots, writhing in the filth of our own corruption! While you have ascended from the dung of mortality, and now walk among the stars! But you were once man! Aye! And as man, you said, "Let me show you the power of Talos Stormcrown, born of the North, where my breath is long winter. I breathe now, in royalty, and reshape this land which is mine. I do this for you, Red Legions, for I love you." Aye, love. Love! Even as man, great Talos cherished us. For he saw in us, in each of us, the future of Skyrim! The future of Tamriel! And there it is, friends! The ugly truth! We are the children of man! Talos is the true god of man! Ascended from flesh, to rule the realm of spirit! The very idea is inconceivable to our Elven overlords! Sharing the heavens with us? With man? Ha! They can barely tolerate our presence on earth! Today, they take away your faith. But what of tomorrow? Do the elves take your homes? Your businesses? Your children? Your very lives? And what does the Empire do? Nothing! Nay, worse than nothing! The Imperial machine enforces the will of the Thalmor! Against its own people! So rise up! Rise up, children of the Empire! Rise up, Stormcloaks! Embrace the word of mighty Talos, he who is both man and Divine! For we are the children of man! And we shall inherit both the heavens and the earth! And we, not the Elves or their toadies, will rule Skyrim! Forever! Terrible and powerful Talos! We, your unworthy servants, give praise! For only through your grace and benevolence may we truly reach enlightenment! And deserve our praise you do, for we are one! Ere you ascended and the Eight became Nine, you walked among us, great Talos, not as god, but as man! Trust in me, Whiterun! Trust in the words of Heimskr! For I am the chosen of Talos! I alone have been anointed by the Ninth to spread his holy word!

If you're not ready for an away from home university, try a community college as it keeps you in a supportive environment rather than in one filled with self doubt. College definitely isn't for everyone, and you shouldn't get yourself into debt just because society tells you it's the only way to gain "success" in life. On the other hand though, if you are trying to get into a career that requires formal education in order to even be qualified to work in the field, then you should at least go to a university, local or other, and learn as much as you can. As nice as it would be for you to learn career skills outside of a formal setting, it already seems like you lack the self discipline to help yourself, and that is where school comes in. It forces you to face the immediate consequences of slacking off and losing focus. Whether or not those consequences give enough incentive for you to change, is completely up to you. If you -blam!- up, then you -blam!- up. Accept it, deal with the consequences, and make something better out of it. Or you could always go the other route. As my friend and I like to joke, "When things get tough, just give up!" As a side-note, whether you know it or not, deep down you've already made a decision as to what you're going to do, and we really can't do shit to change it.

      • Perhaps go part time work, and be a part time student! You can be both a worker and a student. You will obtain real life work experience and also maintain a decent load of studies. You will also have more time for social life and time for yourself which are just as crucial. Take your time through college--college is supposed to be one of the best experiences of our lives! No need to rush it or stress it! You'll do great ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) I work full time, School part time. Just graduated. Go at your own pace is the best advice I have

      • I think of it like running a mile. If my legs are tired, and I want to take a break, I don't just because I know chances are I'm not going to keep on running. You've already started, all you can do it keep moving forward and keep trying to adapt to the new environment. Good luck whitest knightest knight.

Work harder. It's really that simple. Fuck your peers, they're not important. You don't need friends, you don't need clubs, you don't need a social life. I didn't get my pile of academic awards by sitting around making friends, and neither will you. Work harder. Work every damn day until you want to commit suicide, then drink a pot of coffee and get your ass back to work. Fight for every point, accept nothing less than perfection. When you do make a mistake, drill that shit until you won't ever make that same mistake again. If you're not dreaming every day and night of laying your head on the train tracks just to get a reprieve, then you're not working hard enough. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the college experience is not about having fun or being happy, that's just marketing. You're there to get qualified for a career and to collect experience for your resume (you are doing internships aren't you?). And whatever the fuck you do, don't major in something that doesn't have a strong job market. Anything that won't pay off in terms of money isn't something to major in, it's a hobby.

        • I didn't do well my first semester either. But I did a whole lot better my second (it wasn't perfect, but I was able to balance out my GPA to a 3.0). Now I'm taking Summer classes and I'm doing even better (getting straight As in chemistry courses). You adapt or you get left behind. Exploit the many second chances you are given. Negative attitudes are only going to make it worse, so you're better off telling yourself you're ready whether it's actually true or not.

        • Almost all of my peers who decided to take a "break" between high-school and college ended up never actually going to college. Not saying that's what would happen to you, I'm just saying it's hard to build back that momentum to get back into the academics after taking time away from it. Just focus, find your groove when it comes to studying and research. I noticed I would never get any work done if I was studying at home so I began going to the library after my classes and I would get loads done cause there was less distractions. You just have to find the motivation and keep striving to be better.

Nobodies ready for college school especially public doesn't do shit to prepare anyone. I failed 4 classes when i started at a real university and i want to a deul enrollment program in highschool. I got credit but again aint do shit to prepare me. Highschool is all busy work, fun and cuddling teachers. College is mostly papers, thinking and indifferent professors who dont give a -blam!- if you pass or fail. Highschool teachers teach. Professors give you a lecture, a book, the internet and tell you to learn for yourself. Take it from me your not alone i was in college for more than 2 years and got burned out before i got my shit together. It might sound stupid or cliche but the best advice i can give you is to simply work hard. It really is that simple. As for that other stuff i would strongly recommend going back immediately. when people stop they usually dont go back, the older you get the harder it gets. And dont sweat working experience i had 2 jobs before i was done with highschool and 3 jobs while in college aside from your own money your not missing much, pretty much any job you could get now is gonna be stupid easy and for chicken feed. I no from experience too, working while in school. Much harder to do either. Id go while your old man offers to pay. No matter where your going shit is expensive and believe me you dont want a loan or to pay it yourself. I had to do both untill i eventually qualified for aid but im still stuck with a 16 k loan for 1 year and i have no savings from paying for the other years. Good luck.

                  • I have the same problem. I failed or dropped several classes because I lost interest in all of them. Most of them were in subjects I liked but they were all disappointing in some way. That coupled with me not knowing what I wanted to actually do after college just made it worse. I'm going to take a semester off to try to figure things out.
