On Ascension in The Taken King

Since the first time The Taken King was teased, the Destiny community seems to have some rather large problems with the DLC. I'm going to gracefully avoid the pricing conversation, as I don't feel that I am informed about that enough to have an opinion on it. As the title of this thread may have hinted to you if you have even the slightest sense of anything, this post is about ascension. Ascension, since it's premier in the House of Wolves expansion has had me feeling lukewarm about the in-game economy. I'm all for armour ascension, it makes a lot of sense, and completely remedies the old issue of a lack of Guardian individuality. Armour ascension I think should absolutely included in The Taken King. It will even further add to the individuality of the community, everyone can have a distinctive look. Now. We should talk about weapon ascension. Weapon ascension is the side of this issue that I think should not be included in The Taken King. The only exception should be for exotics, and even then, for certain exotics there should be some form of restriction. For example, unless there is a nerf incoming, Gjallarhorn should be left at its current damage or just below the new damage cap. For legendary weapons, I say it's time to let go. We've had our fun, we're even still having fun with previously outdated weapons. In the Taken King, however, it's time to let go of that old Fatebringer, it's time to give up that TDYK (This is specifically pointed at me.) Most people will not like this idea. I understand that. There is an argument to be made that if they don't want us to use old weapons they should have made new weapons more powerful. This argument is okay, but it's weak. Literally, they made Gjallarhorn and Fatebringer the apex weapons for PvE. If the were to make more powerful weapons, they would completely break the game. Weapon ascension has been a problem since its introduction. It's detrimental to the in-game economy because it's actively taking away weapon diversity. Why should I use this new Her Mercy against that group of Fallen when I could use my newly-ascended Fatebringer? Legendary weapon ascension should be discontinued with the beginning of the Taken King. To summarise: Armour should be available for ascension (But it should be much harder than it is now), weapons should be left 'frozen in time'.   • Well lucky for you I think this is how they're going to solve the vault issue. My vault only has a few spaces left in the weapons cask. I don't even use half of them I have been collecting them mostly. I do recall deej saying that he wants us to make hard choices (in something referring to ttk) It leads me to think we will only be able to ascend a few legendary weapons, if any in the taken king. I think this will be done in light of the vaults being full. No sense in keeping the year one weapons if they aren't up to par. Also I think they are preparing for new guardians to join us and don't want them so behind they will quit after a week or two. They will make some effort to level the playing field but also make us feel special by making some weapons unavailable to the new wave of twoobs. So choose carefully. I think this is coming and is more terrifying than oryx.

  • I still don't have a Fatebringer..I would like a chance to use it at its full potential

  • So I actually love the armor ascension just because it fills the void of character customization. It allows you to look the way you like and with the stats you like. I do not like the fact we can re roll weapons outside of iron banner. I feel like it takes away some value of our weapons. It takes away from what made certain weapons great. If you have similar rolls, (I understand you may not be able to get exact rolls) what's the point of trying to obtain certain guns.

  • How about we can still use the Legendary weapons, but they are below damage cap?

    • Totally agree with you. The problem is that they made the Vault of Glass weapons so good that anything they create better than them will likely break the game. I love my Fatebringer but I also love variety and change. I'd rather have the latter than rely on the same weapons all the time. As for your paragraph spacing, I'm an adult with the increasingly rare ability to read entire books, your massive one page of a post is absolutely fine.

    • All valid points but ..... I think players should get the choice on what weapons they want to use. That's what makes the game fun. It's already setup for ascension so they just need to give us the option.

    • What about people who just started playing or just had "old fate bringer " drop? I have friends that don't have the VOC, we are going to get it for them. These guns would be new to them. To say well, "we had our fun with those guns" is assuming everyone started playing when you did or raided as much as you. That's a little arrogant. I don't have a fatebringer yet, but I haven't run VOG enough to deserve it. I absolutely think we should be able to ascend our guns. If Bungie thinks we should move on from our old guns then I challenge them to MAKE SOMETHING BETTER. If they made something better we would naturally switch right? Until then, let me ascend my favorite guns.

      • if there was better weapon balance,people would be able to keep the old stuff they love,and not fear trying something new. balance is why there are only three primary weapons in crucible and three weapons in PvE

      • I agree about legendary weapons. It kills your desire to earn new weapons.... I think armor should still be brought forward but it should be easier to ascend once TK drops. Exotics should be brought forward until a new tier is dropped, and if Gjallarhorn should be nerfed it should be done by making encounters that give you a reason to use something else, or making new exotics better.

      • Pretty much agree with everything you said except about putting restrictions on ascending exotics. They really just need to nerf the Wolfpack rounds and then the Ghorn will be balanced. I feel like it is ruining the raids by being the one solution for every boss. I would love to have a reason to use other exotics but right now the Ghorn makes every fight a lot easier because it is so much better than every other weapon. It probably also makes things difficult from a developer standpoint because they either need to come up with tricks to prevent players from killing the boss with rockets or they need to buff the bosses to such a ridiculous amount that it makes them difficult to kill with anything but ghorn. Anyway it is op everybody knows it. So they should do a nerf to make the game better in the long run.
